A Big Mistake... Ouchy Wow Wow!🤕

Aug 20, 2016 4:28 PM

I guess it was too soon to come off the Fentanyl patch yesterday afternoon. By bedtime I had some stinging & tingling above the surgical incision again (ACDF). I did not sleep good at all.
By morning I had definite pain in various areas of my shoulders, chest, neck, & face; from stiffness, tingling, throbbing, burning/stinging, & even pin prickling/stabbing. Above the incision into my face (lips, nose, chin, cheeks) it compares to trigeminal neuralgia. The rest of the areas are just general stiffness and achy pain.

I put a new patch on after my shower at 10 am but it hasn't helped one bit. I finally took a dose of hydrocodone about 4:15 pm, yet I feel no relief. The hydrocodone is suppose to be for breakthrough pain, but since I'm at a level 8, or even a 9 as I can't get comfortable. I'm just looking to get it back under tolerable control. Being new to using both meds, I'm not sure what to expect. How long before i should feel some decrease in symptoms?

I guess this will be one of the few surgeries it takes me longer to get over and come off rx pain med. I guess I have fibromyalgia to thank for that. I hope everyone else is having a much less painful day!! Hugs love & prayers to all! 🙂💕🙏🌸

It's harder to get control of it back once it's out of control. If you do reel it in stay on top of the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree.i tend t to this often to myself. I find thst once my pain is out of control it take two or three does to get it back to tolleralbe. Hoping you get down soon flappys.

Flappys, Fentanyl patches are normally 72 hour lasting, if you came off it straight away it could partly be withdrawal symptoms, but equally it also takes 48-72hours to get into your system fully, Hope this is helpful 😊😊

Have you tried accupuncture. I hurt for you and worry with the fentanyl and hydrocodone. That stuff is nasty to get off, it is so addictive.

Also honey bee sting can help, read the literature, ginger, wasabi, Chinese mustard.

Hey Flappys are you up to a quick call yet?

@ Gibber, Newfibrogirl, & Jahmac, I'm not familiar with many pain meds because of my allergies. Thanks for the info on the lifespan of the meds. I don't think I'll be coming back of of it for at least another week or so. After 16 hours back in the patch & 2 doses of hydrocodone in 12 hr, I can say that at least the face isn't having as bad pain as it was, though the incision is still quite alert! But I'm wondering if this may be permanent along the underside of the chin. Wherever my chin rests on the neck brace, it feels painful and irritating to the touch. I'm hoping the doc puts me in a soft collar when I see him Tuesday-week (30th).

As you can see, I'm awake too (2 m to now, after 4 am), from the Prednisone my PCP called in for my sinus & chest congestion & infection. 😴😪😶 Yay! Second night of not sleeping, and 2 more days/6 doses to go. It's probably a safe bet I'll have at least 2 more insomnia nights. I think the congestion is clearing up and I'm coughing much less.

@ EWright,. I don't know if it's lack of sleep or fibro fog, but I'm not understanding your comment on the honey bee sting, ginger, wasabi, & Chinese mustard. I think I've heard something on bee stings and allergies, but just can't recall it. As for acupuncture, my insurance doesn't cover it. And I'm not sure I could tolerate the needles... It's one of my phobias, needles! 😲

@ LMB, if I took a phone call now my hubby would kill me for waking him! Lol He's a very light sleeper. Tomorrow would be better and safer for me. 😉 Poor thing, he finally admitted he was exhausted with all he's done around the house and for me the past two weeks. I told him he should, because he's done both our jobs. I'm so blessed! 👼 He goes back to work Monday and I think he's actually looking forward to it. Lol He says he's coming home at lunch every day the first week to make sure I'm doing ok.

Hugs love & prayers for all to have better days ahead this coming week! 🙂💕🙏🌸

Glad you've been able to reel the pain in some anyway.

Yes, it's definitely better than yesterday. When I was drying off my neck & face from my shower, as I touched the chin area above the incision there's like a traveling electric current shock feeling that follows the motion I made. The area is about 3-4" long from the center of my chin towards the left ear; it's the whole length of the incision or more, but offset. Weird & painful! I never went back to sleep and finally got up at 7 am. And I fell asleep from 1000-11:30 nap. Yay! I feel better with the pain back under control.
