I was diagnosed with acid reflux over a decade ago and been taking Prilosec. But lately acid has been creeping up my esophagus at night and I get horrible chest pains now. I have Sjögren's, fibromyalgia and I was wondering if I am developing something else. Any advice?
Painlady, it's very possible. I was having chest pain, thinking it was my heart, especially with the sob. My cardiologist ran a heart Cathy on me, and it was normal, except for mild mitral valve prolapse & regurgitation, and preventricular contractions. A month later the sob was tired to allergies. It wasn't until my GI doc did an EGD that we found out my GERD has caused Barrett's esophagus, which can sometimes develop into cancer. A surgical GI did a repeat EGD and inserted a computerized chip to read how much acid I had and how often the hiatal hernia reacted. Normally 14.72 is high enough to warrant surgical correction; my score was over 80! I've had GERD since 1988 and known of the hiatal hernia since 2006. I'm having surgery to repair the hernia, close the diaphragm opening smaller, and resupport the esophagus with stomach tissue (fundoplication) on Thursday. Hiatal hernia are the culprit of many with GERD, but my score of 80 puts me in the top 5% of extremely severe GERD. Doc worries that ups my chance for the Barrett's to turn cancerous. I found out Barrett's esophagus can give you chest pain like a heart attack. You should definitely see your doctor, if you've never had an EGD; a simple& painless outpatient procedure. Hugs& prayers! 🙂💕🙏🌼
Wow, you are in my prayers. I guess it's time to be scoped again by the GI Doctor. Unless A EGD is where they stick the camera down your throat then no I haven't had one. But it's been 13years since I have been scoped.
Hi! I've not read all comments but I have Fibro & GERD I take Esomeprazole 80mg every day and it woks wonders with the acid you get at night. If I miss a day or 2 then it returns and wakes me up with severe discomfort. I've had the camera down my throat and all sorts of other tests and meds before they tried Esomeprazole. Mention it to your GP? Hope it helps xo
Thanks Painlady & Silver try. I've been on so many different GERD meds in the last 28 years, they've had to change every so often, and now I've been back on nexium (esomeprazole) for the third time for 3+ years. I didn't know how good it worked until i had to stop it for the test. I'm hoping & paying the surgery goes well enough I won't need meds any more! 🙂🙏🌼💕
