ALIF tomorrow, tips?

Mar 24, 2015 4:59 AM

Wanted to keep anyone posted because you were all so very supportive to me when I needed it, and I have been mia from the boards lately I am sorry!

Wanted to let you know that I have my ALIF surgery tomorrow, from L4-S1 I believe it's either a double or triple fusion in total. I am 3 weeks post op from my cervical fusion and feeling SO much better too. In a soft collar now, & gaining a lot of strength back (that loss of strength surprised me so much).

I will be inpatient approximately a week or so then home for recovery. If anyone has any tips for me I'd love them! What to pack in hospital bag etc. I have my toiletries (such a must for a lengthy stay, robe (omg a must for anyone having the cervical fyi!), some jammies/slippers and my crochet (new hobby lol) stuff along with books and laptop. Also my white tee shirts and undies lol (a must for the stomach incision per surgeon - no dye allowed on tummy).

To be honest....I am scared to death. I know how lengthy and invasive this is! But I can feel SO much already changing inside from my cervical fusion I am trying to fill myself with hope.

Thanks for listening and I will try to do better with participating on the boards! ♡

Therapistunveiled, I am so very happy you are having such success only being 3 weeks out from your cervical fusion. It should give you hope for the lumbar/sacral fusion. It sounds like you have everything covered for packing your hospital bag. Seems you have your comfy stuff and also things to keep your mind busy. I know that as a therapist, you're aware that your fear is normal. You will fly through this and it will be over before you know it. I hope your recovery is swift and complete. I'll be keeping you in my prayers and am sending you healing vibes and well wishes your way. 💕🌻🙏🌺

Therapistunveiled, It's very uplifting to me when anyone on here has good results. Im so very happy for you on the cervical fusion recovery. Your lumbar surgery & recovery will go just as well if you do everything you're suppose to and avoid doing what you're not.

Be realistic with your expectations, then you'll be pleased with the results rather than disappointed. It likely will take a longer period to fully recover from the lumbar, 1-because of the intense procedure & 2- because that's the area everyone knows takes longer to fully heal. So don't beat yourself up if 3 wk post op you're not where you thought you should be.

You are a strong and committed person, and I know you'll do just great. Everyone has fear. If someone doesn't then they're the one that's not normal. But there truly is hope, when we have the faith to believe. And I believe in you & that your surgery & recovery will go off without a hitch. Good luck & God bless you & the physician's & staff doing your surgery! Praying for you ... 🙏🌼

PS, as for jammies, you may want gowns instead of elastic waist PJ pants. I did when I had my low abdominal surgery. Also, if you're taking your phone/tablet, don't forget the chargers. And personally I prefer my own pillow(s).

Thank you for the kind words...and tips on elastic waist! Didn't think of that but will be so important! Thanks :-) ♡

I am so so scared. I cannot sleep tonight. It's after 3am and I have to be up within 2 hrs to leave for surgery. The bowel prep waa HORRID. I feel so weak and like crap. I know this is the best thing for me but I just keep worrying and playing what if....game in my head.

Hopefully I'll be too tired to freak out when it comes go time soon :(

Mar 25, 2015 8:49 AM

TherapistUnveiled, by the time you read this your surgery will be finished. I pray your discomfort is taken care of by the meds they give you and you are able to rest, etc. I'm so sorry you were unable to sleep. After having 28 surgeries and freaking out for each and every one of them, I know how you felt. It's not easy. The mind keeps giving you all of these horrid scenarios and you do the "what if" thing until you think you're going to have a nervous breakdown. Now that you're done, do what you've got to do, heal up and by the Grace of God I pray that you have relief and get your life back. All the best of luck and you will be in my prayers. 💕

Therapist Unveiled I pray that everything went well and that you are resting comfortably at this time. Hopefully in a couple of weeks you will be almost back to normal and ready to enjoy the rest of your life.

Therapistunveiled, I'm so sorry about your worrisome and sleepless night. Been there done that myself.

Its weird but the more times I go under the blade the more scared I am. Its probably because of working in the medical field and seeing first hand (in med charts-records) the things that can happen. And you probably know this too with your medical training.

But by now you should be in recovery. Sending hugs and well wishes to you. And may God give you the strength, endurance & patience to recover as fully and quickly as you can, and to have as little pain and discomfort as possible while you recover! 🙏🌼

Mar 25, 2015 4:11 PM

Therapist Unveiled hope you had a good restful night, and a good day today. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you all for the reassurance. This is all I can type for now. Surgery went well, hospital a nightmare at times. Hoping today goes more smoothly.

♡ :)

Mar 26, 2015 11:16 AM

Glad you were able to type anything at all. I can sympathize with nightmares of being in a hospital. You have control over nothing. It's hard but I'm glad that you're all finished and that you are now on the road to recovery.

I ditto Weezie's & AlwayZ's messages. Glad the stress of worrying is over too. May God bless you with a full & speedy recovery! Sweet dreams tonight I hope.🙏🌼
