ambian not working..sleep trouble

Aug 23, 2015 1:10 AM

Any tips on how to get sleep .as of now I've only been given ambian from the ER Dr. It normally works but tonight . not so much

I have horrible trouble trying to sleep. I take Restoril (Temazapan) and I take 15mg 1/2 hour before I want to fall asleep and then when I wake up (like an hour later) I take the other 15mg. It's gotten to the point I just take 30mg when I go to bed and hope for the best. The whole thing sucks!!! It's currently 4:27am and I've not been to bed yet. It I'm lucky, I'll fall asleep around 6 and wake up around 8 and that will be all I'll get. I wish I knew what to tell you other than try another sleep aid. Perhaps Melatonin. You get it over the counter, it's a chemical your body produces naturally so it may give you the boost you need to fall asleep. I am sure there are others here who can make better suggestions than I can. I wish you the best of luck. I'll keep you in my prayers you get rest. 💕🙏🏻🌻

Hi Everyone, I take 10mg the best secret to taken ambien is taken it early the best thing I take a half at 9pm and take the other half at 9:30 and I fall to sleep about after 10 the later you take the ambien my doctor says it will be hard to get to sleep and it's true so I started doing half at 9/9:30 give it a try and see how it works. Good luck!

Aug 23, 2015 8:53 AM

If you take 5mg take 1 at 9 and 1 at 930 and tell me how things work for you. Good sleep you will wake up like you had 8 hours sleep

Aug 23, 2015 8:56 AM

Thanks for the advice leolion66 I will give it a try. Also thanks to alwayzinpakn

Hi fibrogirl.. what alwayz is taking is different than what u are taking so please be very careful uping the dosage. I used to take ambien too and for the longest time it knocked me out and I slept pretty well. Eventually I think like most meds i built up a tolerance and when I went back to my primary doc she said she had to lower the dosage because they were finding that ambien affects women differently. Of course it wasn't working at the higher dose anymore so she switched me to something else but it made me feel like crap so I stopped taking them all together.

I have tried melatonin and it did help for awhile. Maybe a combo of your regular dosage of ambien and a little melatonin will work instead of uping your ambien. Amien can be dangerous especially if u take too much.

If you try the melatonin with your ambien take the melatonin an hour or so before you take the ambien.

I hear you linda000 .I have a Dr appointment this week so I'll tell him my concerns and I'll let you all know what came of it once I see him..thank you all for your valuable advice. It means so much to me.

Aug 23, 2015 9:03 AM

I tried melatonin once before didn't work for me with ambien until I talk to my doctor she said I was taken it to late

Aug 23, 2015 9:12 AM

Fibrogirl - good, your doc might even be able to suggest something better. Although I have to admit ambien was great compared to others I've tried. It never made me feel like I was walking around in a haze for 2 hours after I got up like the others the doc gave me.

This might sound crazy but what I use now is benadryl. For me it works better than the melatonin. My sleep pattern is not as bad as it used to be tho .. that might also work with your ambien. Like the melatonin it seems to work best if i take it an hour or 2 before bed so i would take 2 or 3 long before u take your ambien. Like alwayz said it might give u the little extra boost u need to sleep and unlike some prescibed meds it doesn't make me foggy in the am.

Aug 23, 2015 9:15 AM

Leo - i found with the melatonin that it didn't work if I took it too soon before bed. Did your doc say how soon before you take ambien you should take it?

Aug 23, 2015 9:20 AM

9 or 930 cause I was taken it at 10 11 etc etc I use to be up all night just laying in the bed not a good feeling

Aug 23, 2015 9:27 AM

That sounds right.. i learned it through trial and error and no its not a good feeling at all. I used to toss n turn all night begging the universe to just please let me sleep... for days at a time.. going on for weeks/months at a time before I would finally get one nights rest. The pain is bad enough we should at least be allowed to sleep through some of it.. not sleeping increases stress and pain.

I've been sleeping better the last few months since I switched to a new treatment for my rheumatoid arthritis. The fibro has calmed down a lot too since then. Pain is evil!

Aug 23, 2015 9:30 AM

Hey there fibrogirl I strongly recommend not taking ambien and talking to your primary care physician, I'm guessing you have trouble sleeping so after my story of why I don't recommend ambien and I'll tell you what I've tried and my suggestion of what I think may help you. I took ambien in 2007 for a long time and it made me feel drunk and whenever I'd walk I'd sometimes run into the wall and I could never go right to bed after I took it because it just made me feel tired and woozy and a bit drowsy and there were times when I hallucinated, one night when it was raining really hard and my dad was working(he's a UPS pilot)I woke my mom up telling her that my ceiling was leaking I honestly saw steaks where drops of water had come down(it wasn't real) I thought my wall was damp and I was convinced that there was a leak but there wasn't one and there was no drops of water coming down my wall. My wall was dry. It was all a horrible hallucination. And at one point I was extremely depressed and felt suicidal, I had actually begun to make plans to kill myself. So soon after these events(depression was first wall incident was second) I was taken off of ambien. I've tried zzzquil and it works okay but it's for short term use only and stops working after like a week. I've tried one other over the counter sleep aid before but that was too long ago for me to remember the name of it. I actually sleep during the day(read my neurofibromatosis post if you want) I have neurofibromatosis(nf for short) type one and sometimes people with nf have trouble sleeping at night. I used to sleep at night. One of the last things I tried was natural melatonin(in tablet form)but I started having to take more(never take more than recommended I put myself in danger taking such a large dose of it) melatonin does work but I think it's one of those short term deals. But I think melatonin might help you, it's worth a shot.
P.S. Welcome to the community and sorry for the long post I tend to ramble.

No problems. Delilah I welcome a the help and tips I can get. Hearing all the stories really makes me feel more settled in my path. Most all of these stories are all things I've experiences but somehow thought it could nor be related. I've not told my fiky half of the issues I have which have all been mentioned by someone here. I just don't think my family will understand or if they do it will scare them. Because in addition to my illness my father is also sick with prostate and Myeloma cancer . so my family is really going through right now. So thank you for allowing me to hear your stories and sharing. My uncle encouraged me to find a group like this one and I'm so very thankful . so thanks to all who have responded and please keep it coming. I'm taking it all in and filing it accordingly.

Fibrogirl, I started using Ambien in 2007-2008, and I used it until 2014. The last year of use it wasn't working as well, and I began needing more help to fall asleep. I was also having major memory issues and forgetting conversations (not fibro fog), and forgetting is gotten up during the night. I became desperate for sleep! I also started having nightmares related to things I had seen, heard, watched on TV or read about. I had to limit overstimulation four hours before bed. So I began recording intended shows I liked and if watch them during day hours.

Leolion is right about taking it early. For some reason I couldn't take it and go to bed, but instead of take mine at 8 and then when I went to bed at 10-11 I fell asleep. It has to get in your system. The doc who helped wean me off Ambien did so by giving me Melatonin (5mg) + Benadryl every night, for three months. Then I began leaving the benadryl off. My psych doc ran blood tests and found my natural serotonin levels were too low so he tripled my antidepressant dose. Now I rarely even need 1/2 of 3mg of melatonin. But if I'm in pain I will take a Tylenol PM. I hope you can find something that works for you! 🙏🌼

Make sure you take ambien on an empty stomach otherwise it won't work.

I Also drink chamomile tea before bed. Works wonderfully

Aug 23, 2015 11:57 AM

Sleepytime tea with a few drops of honey is good too.

Aug 23, 2015 12:01 PM

Sleepy time tea I use to drink it but when it get use of your body it stop working

Aug 23, 2015 12:03 PM

So what time table is best .I normally take the ambian with my night time pain meds tramadol. And I have to take that with food.normally a yogurt cup or fruit smoothie.

Aug 23, 2015 12:06 PM

I take my pain medications at 8 and at 9pm and 930

Aug 23, 2015 12:24 PM

Can you take your tramadol earlier so you don't have to take the ambien with the yogurt/smoothie? Chocolat is right. It works better on an empty stomach.

If u can do that then I would do your tramadol and melatonin or whatever u decide an hour or 2 earlier than u would take the ambien. Then take the ambien just before bed. Maybe that process would work for u better.

Aug 23, 2015 12:25 PM

I try not to take my ambien for an hour after ive eaten. It takes me 30 minutes to feel the effects. I'll t she it and read till I feel it.

Aug 23, 2015 8:45 PM

Is it ambien or ambien cr? The cr is time released and seem to work better for me. They told me those orange glasses no tv computer before bed would help. I just don't fight it if I can't sleep I get up for awhile and read.

Aug 23, 2015 8:58 PM

You probably need a stronger dose or the cr. Has your doctor had you do a sleep study? If not that is a good route to pursue. My Dr didn't put me on it until after my sleep study.

Aug 24, 2015 7:41 AM

They suggested I do one
I had one done several years ago but not was for another issue.

Aug 26, 2015 6:24 AM

Alwayzinpain, if any has happened to u while u were asleep and up woke up to it. That alone will cause you not to sleep. I have insomnia and ptsd. You have to change your meds around when one stops working. Sitting in the sun helps too. But Iam only speaking from my experience. Hope u feel better soon. God bless
