Anyone in New Zealand

Hi All,
I have just started using this app to record my pain. It is so good to be able to capture how it moves around my body and at what intensity. I'm 42 yrs old, married with young child. Not able to work. diagnosed with anxiety and depression but am now acknowledging chronic pain is affecting my recovery. I have a lot of fatigue also. I have been referred to the pain clinic and guess I will get a diagnoses then ? Fibromyalgia ? Spinal stenosis ? CRPS ...feeling isolated, is anyone living in NZ and know of some good supports - thanks : )

...also frequent migraines too!

Hi there, I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. I live in Dunedin and have anxiety and depression due to a lifetime of pain. I get migraines too...
I have been to the pain clinic here in Dunedin and found them very helpful, they run an 8 week pain management course which looks at lots of aspects of pain and includes gym time. I found it really helpful. A pain nurse, a physio and an occupational therapist run it together with support from a psychologist and doctor. I would ask your clinic about anything similar nearer to home.
I have found meditation to be the biggest benefit. There are regular sessions in chch.
I can send you a book (FOC) too.
Another useful thing I've found is counselling, is there a uni or poly course that has a free clinic in chch?
I haven't found a support group or non-profit for pain sufferers but depending on the diagnosis there may be something specific...
It can be hard to take the advice from medical professionals, I'd probably get banned from here if I related my reaction to be being told to pace myself, but engaging with those that are there to help has been very beneficial to me.
Recognising that anxiety, depression and pain are interrelated is a great insight.

Hi fontalamh,
Thanks for your support & advise. You have given heaps of new options to think about : ) I would be interested to get a copy of the book you mentioned. Is it available at the library? Cheers

I'm cutting and pasting so have to do this in bits...
This one is more technical/medical than the next one.

Hi, been away but now able to send that book. If I sent it to arthritis NZ at 15 Washington Way would picking it up there work for you?

ChchKiwi, welcome to our family community!! I am from America and I am really glad that you found us. You will find that we are a tight knit, fun loving bunch who are always here to help our fellow pain sufferers. We are all here for different diagnosis but we all share the commonality of chronic, irretractable pain. I have over a dozen diagnosis, that cause me to have level 8 pain most days. I've been this way for 22 years and it is hard but finding this group of wonderful people has been a Godsend. You are never alone. There is always someone who will come to your aid when you need it. This is also a safe place to get things off your chest, ask questions, vent, cry, celebrate or anything else you need to do. There are no judgements here. We understand, we "get it". It makes it somehow more bearable when you know that there are people here at the ready to help you and that we really DO understand because we live it every day. I hope that you settle in and hang out with us for as long as you want. Sending you gentle {{{Hugs}}} and prayers and best wishes for a peaceful and light pain day.🌻🙏🏻

Hi Fontalamh,
Apologies for the delay, I am still trying to figure this site out. I like the look of the Living Well with Pain and Illness : The Mindful Way to Free Yourself from Suffering book! ...so I have decided to purchase it - thank you.
Also, thank you to Alwayzinpain... Your post & support are appreciated :)
I still have no diagnoses so don't know what I'm dealing well. Feel shattered and exhausted from pain... It takes such a toll on your energy & wellbeing. I am going back see my dr early next week to see if I can get better pain relief while I await the pain clinic and surgeon reviews!
Wishing everyone all the best

That's disappointing about the diagnosis. Prompting me to get the book off the shelf was helpful for me. I work with nonprofits, of I hear of any pain events up your way I'll post them here. A recent event in Dunedin was very good and Arthritis NZ do sessions. Best wishes.
