Back pain At night

Oct 12, 2015 11:19 PM

I was in a motorcycle accident on 03/08/14 it wasn't a serious accident in that I suffered no broken bones just muscular/soft tissue damage.

I have been to physio ŵhich has helped my daytime symptoms however at night I am in agony typically during the day I am sore however the pain is manageable. At night however I am in agony to the point I've tried sleeping on the floor, In the bath, on the sofa and on a large bean bag but still with all I'm in extreme pain. I even bought a new bed with no luck if tried sleeping flat and upright, with and without pillows and even have a memory foam pillow. The pain runs the whole length of my lower back and gives me Shooting pains down the front of both legs

Tonight for example I have taken 30mg of MST SR and a Matrazipan 15mg I must have fell asleep around 12:30am and I woke at 4:30am and although this is an amazing amount of time for me to sleep(usually wake evert 2 hours) when I woke up I'm in excruciating pain and cannot turn over and struggle to walk.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Welcome Subostar85, I was in my first auto accident in 1985. I didn't go to the er because I just had a bad headache & mild lumbar discomfort for 3 days. 2 months later I was at the ER unable to move, because as I got back in bed, reaching for covers a hot searing pain shot up and down my spine from the lumbar area. They said it was delayed whiplash.

I continued to have problems with shooting pains down my legs and in my neck for years. In 1992 I had neck fusions from that wreck. I've been in other accidents (I had a bullseye apparently on my car because out of them all, only 1 was my fault... I slammed into a car stopped). My sciatica pain has never completely healed. I get the shooting pains on & off. I have DDD, osteoarthritis, bulges, tears, and constant lumbosacral pain (tender like a deep throbbing bruise), in my spine. Now with the fibromyalgia it's worse.

For treatment I use Voltaren gel, muscle relaxers and mostly Tylenol Arthritis or night time Tylenol. I use frozen socks off rice (can't do ice packs), and the socks can be microwaved for heart pack. On really bad nights I use Tramadol. I've had chiropractic adjustments (gentle), massages, and multiple PT episodes over the years. Now I have a TENS unit that helps block pain signals. I went through 2 years of epidural steroid injx, 3 injx at each level, 2-3 months apart. It has been the biggest help for the sciatic pain. I'm returning to my pain specialist for returned sciatic and headache pains. I last heard an injx in 2013, January.

Have you seen an orthopedist and/or neurologist, to make sure you don't have delayed disc issues? Something is pinching the nerves, whether it's inflamed muscle tissue or a disc, a doctor needs to check. You would need an MRI at the least or a myelogram at the most. They usually try PT, them an MRI if it doesn't help. If it's just inflammation, ask for a referral to a pain care specialist. Good luck finding a good doctor to help you through this. I'm praying for you that it's inflammation, nothing serious. 🙏🌼

Thank you FlappysLady81, iv not had an MRI when I had the accident I was xray'd and they said there were no bone issues. But gradually the pain is getting worse . I am on Morphine sulphate slow release as I was eating tramadol like sweets even maxitram SR Doesn't help. You've gave me a lot to think about though and I'm going to book an appointment with the doctor first thing and push for further investigation as they just keep giving me stronger painkillers. Iv been going to PT a while now and although my day pain has lessened significantly it's my night pain that's causing me the issues , thank you so much for your advice and kind words ❤️

You've clearly tried a lot of things, and this might not work for you, but have you tried sleeping in a hammock, or on tatami?

Subostar, first off I am so sorry you are going through this. I would suggest you need an MRI and soon. I have this kind of pain and also wake up every two hours. I have to get up and move around before I can go back to sleep. I am on the fentanyl patch due to my Gerd and intolerance to oral meds, I was also on morphine for breakthrough pain, but it did not work for me and it was expensive. I am now on oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I ended up having to get an adjustable bed with memory foam mattress. It helps some. I have two herniated disks and fibromyalgia. It took a very long time to get a diagnosis for both of these. Much longer for fibromyalgia. You need further diagnostics. A neurologist will usually not see you without an mri. You have done physio and meds without relief, so your doctor should order an MRI. I have learned that as a patient we have to advocate for ourselves. Good luck, gentle hugs, I hope you get some relief.

Subostar, I'm very sorry that you're having so much pain. I'm still on the process 22 years into this trying to get some concrete answers and help for my pain. I hurt all the time but I can't lay in bed for very long as it causes severe pain along the outside of my hips and lower back. I've tried Tramadol (did nothing for me) I've tried OxyContin, oxycodone, morphine sulfate, Norco, nucynta sp? Other than the Norco I had to take soma with the other meds as they caused bad muscle tension in my upper back. If I never see another soma as long as I live it's too soon. I started fantasizing about commiting suicide. It was a daily struggle to want to live. Now I'm on Norco and although I'm not getting enough pills per day to take, I don't want to die. I sleep 2-3 hours per night usually in 2 shifts. I agree with everything others said. You really need to have an MRI and perhaps get a rederral to a neuro surgeon. My primary care doctor told me to never let an orthopedic surgeon operate on my spine. I had a double c-spine diskectomy with fusion in 08. Personally, I got no relief from the surgery. However I know many people who had great success. I hope you are able to get answers and help for your pain and can get some decent sleep. Blessings ✌️❤️

Thank you Saphire380' i have booked a doctors appointment next Wednesday (earliest I could get) . I bought a bed with a good mattress but it doesn't seem to help. Hi anonymous1971
I totally know where your coming from as Iv told the doctor I just don't want to live like this myself. You must be a really strong person physically and emotionally to be able to cope this at long . I am going to push for an MRI scan when I see the doctor next week as it seems by others experiences this is the first step in the right direction. Thanks again for your kind words such a relief to know I'm not the only one out there who has / is feeling like this 💜

It definetly helps to know we're not alone! I guess I've adjusted or just accepted the fact that this is my reality. Hoping I've finally found the doctor that's going to give me some answers and an official diagnosis other then the ones I already have that aren't responsible for my all over pain. You're on the right path!
