Bad advice

Jul 14, 2016 8:37 PM

What's the worst advice you've had from a friend, colleague, or even random stranger on dealing with your pain?

It seems the second you mention having chronic pain, everyone has advice - be a vegetarian, run 12km every day, take magnesium. I was told to take Arnica tablets, to help with swelling - despite my condition (fibromyalgia) not including a whole lot of swelling, and Arnica being poisonous if you ingest it.

Take colloidal silver water to build my immune system. I have lupus my immune system is attacking me. I'm on meds to surpress it including chemo.

Hi Ellie... 🌷
Its not so much bad advice persay... i just feel soooo devalidated when told.."...but u look so great?!" It unhinges me... cos pain is not an easily quantifiable thing by ur average Jo.

However if i meet another chronic pain sufferer... they can always see it in my eyes... so i guess they really are the 'windows to the soul!' πŸ€—

"Try not to think about it"

Jul 15, 2016 3:58 AM

"...it cant be THAT bad...?"

Jul 15, 2016 6:22 AM

'You need to eat more sugar' by a nurse who knows I have type one diabetes

Jul 15, 2016 7:58 AM

"You just need to get up and do something. Get more active!" Easy for them to say.

Jul 15, 2016 8:46 AM

"...have u tried yoga???"

Jul 15, 2016 12:33 PM

It's all in your head. It can't be that bad. The best was a Rheumatologist your hips and knees will feel better if you Lisa weight... I am 5'9 and 120lbs, this quack never even looked at me. I walked out and demanded a refund.

Go natural or smoke/use weed.

Sister-in-law "when are you going to ditch the cane?" Sent her educational material on RA and AS. After I was done being angry.

Jul 16, 2016 7:41 AM

@LMB, I've heard that too many times, along with the classic, "oh, I get sore xyz too!"

Jul 16, 2016 7:44 AM

One look at my crutch...🐫 &
"...have u got a bad leg?"

Ok stop sniggering... not getting my under-carriage out at the checkout in sainsburys!🐴
(Well not since the last time! Hehehe)πŸ˜‰

I went to a doctor who after me telling them all my symptoms said "but what does that mean?" Your the doctor im paying you 😲 that wasnt really bad advice but just something that happened to me on my fibro journey

Jul 16, 2016 9:16 AM

I had a doctor tell me once that my full body pain and unbearable joint pain with weather changes was just my fibro and since fibro doesn't cause any damage I should just ignore it and push through. That was the last time I saw him.

Jul 16, 2016 8:11 PM

I had a Rheumatologist tell me that until I had blood work that proved more than once that I had a super high ANA and SED rate he was not going to treat me. Um, hello????? I've been on Plaquenil for over 5 years now. Unless in flare not going to have high levels. I fired him on the spot and walked out!

Jul 16, 2016 8:34 PM

Its all in your head 😑

Jul 17, 2016 11:54 AM

I had a "friend" tell me that I should just drink a beer and I'd be just fine.

Jul 17, 2016 12:44 PM

Haha no clue have they. Thats why i always say walk a week in my shoes. On my easiest week you wouldnt cope. πŸ˜’ x

Jul 17, 2016 12:54 PM

Fibrofitty, they wouldn't last a week in our shoes.. LOL!!!πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸ˜Š

πŸ€”14years ago a consultant neurologist told me...
"...there is NO PAIN in MS!" πŸ€”

I had him take early retirement after he called my husband at home and told him i was lying to my family and making up being in pain because he had never seen pain in multiple sclerosis!πŸͺ

He was a fucking pig 🐽dinosaur consultant that broke my heart when he seeded that doubt in my husbands mind. But hubby lives with it too, so he knows the truth. 🐫

Jul 18, 2016 1:30 AM

Sorry for profanity 🌷
Apologies... that man deserved it 🐽

Jul 18, 2016 4:32 PM

If you just stop eating you'll loss weight and be fine again or just learn to live through it your being to negative.

Jul 18, 2016 5:40 PM

Well, that's just bullsh*t. You shouldn't feel like that. Arrrrrrgh??!! Heard it so many many times.

Jul 19, 2016 3:41 PM

Just today I was told I as getting upset for nothing. I should just calm down

Jul 19, 2016 4:47 PM

"Well you are getting older and you're going to have more pain." And then being chewed out by two docs for being obese due to non activity, or"not active enough" in their opinions. And all of the above has been said at some time or another.

Jul 26, 2016 2:23 PM

OMG!!! I hear the same bullshit.. Between people I thought were friends who say have a beer and relax and you'll feel better to doctors that say you need to lose weight and you'll feel better. You need to exercise. Well if I could do those things you dumb fuck, I'd be still working at my job!!!! It makes me roll my eyes every time. And if I hear one more person say "Oh, but you look so good" what the hell does that mean?πŸ€”πŸ™„πŸ˜‘

Jul 26, 2016 3:08 PM

@Alwayzinpain- I am laughing with you, not at you. I have heard them all too.

Jul 26, 2016 6:29 PM

Alwayzinpain I love it!! I hate that people have said these things to you but I have heard it all too! I do not with this pain on anyone, however; some days I wish they could walk a day in our shoes just to see what bullshit advice they would have after ! Lol

Jul 26, 2016 8:34 PM

New one for me "You can't lose weight by eating more!" (I've lost 20 pounds and six inches from my waist from more than doubling my calories in the last year)

"If you lose weight all your problems will go away."

I have more but I just took my second pain pill of the day...I have never had to do that before, so I'm in a major pain fog.

Jul 26, 2016 8:47 PM

I have life treating allergies... "just eat it. What's the worse thing that can happen?"

Jul 26, 2016 10:48 PM

For my foot pain: "At least you still have your leg!"
I agree, but felt sufficiently worse and ungrateful.
