Best med for severe muscle spasms?

May 14, 2016 2:05 AM

I think I have all my pain under control, but my muscle spasms seems worse and worse. It's happening 24/7. I'm on noflex 100mg at the moment for spasms and I don't think it was working as well when I first started it. Those spasms are making it unbearable to sit or stand or even lay down.

Can you advise me what's really working for you??

I take flexeril 10mg three times a day as needed. Usually need at leastone a day on regular days.increased spasm days I take all three. Work well for me at least as it refers to spasms. Hope you find relief soon! 💜

Do you take a magnesium supplement? I found high dose magnesium helped for my muscle spasms

Texaschick, I don't take magnesium supplements. I heard it helps. Maybe I should give it a go. Really desperate now. Willing to try anything.

Does anybody get constant muscle spasms? How long does it last for you and what can you do once it starts and won't stop.

I take tizanidine 4 times a day it stopped my muscle spasms.

Be careful with flexeril/flexall or any other name as it is known to cause Atrial Fibulation. Unfortunately it did it to my husband.

I take magnesium malate and potassium to help with muscle spasms. Potassium needs to be monitored by your doctor if you take it.
Stretching and massage with essential oils. Peppermint works well but it is very song smelling. There are blends out there for 'muscle relief', they all contain peppermint. The muscle will hurt more when you massage it and stretch it but it'll stop sooner. At least that's what i found.
Hope you find something that helps you

Epsom salt (7 cups) in a long hot bath is what works for me. Better than any muscle relaxers.
@shammagren thanks for the heads up on flexeril. I was going in and out of A-fib and could not find the trigger. I have not had a problem for awhile. Thought it was my diet cgange. Now I think it may have been the fact that I changed muscle relaxers.

No worries LMB my husband at 35, he is now 46, got it from flexerall. It is so bad after 14 times of getting his heart shocked in about as many months he has stayed out of rhythm.

No one ever told us it was flexerall until I told our new doctor that is usually what they gave me and she told us that. We had been trying to figure out why my husband had it for years then it all made sense he had hurt his neck and was on flexerall when it happened.

I guess the reason I was suprised is my degree and career was in invasive cardiology. Feel like I should have known that one. Oops

I used to have a baclofen pump for my spasms it helped but didn't stop them but the access port kept getting infected. Tizanidine and Diazepam are no good, but that's probably because my spasms are due to an Spinal Cord Injury and are in the severe scale.

I get leg spasms at night. Zinc and Magnesium supplements cut this way back. I also get potassium by using one of the salt substitutes (which has salt and potassium). My electrolyte levels get weird sometimes. In the summer, instead of drinking Gatorade, I'll make lemonade (with sugar) and add the salt substitute to it. Salty lemonade helps a lot.

I take Zanaflex 4mg 4x a day. It knocks me flat sometimes. (I take it on as needed basis, not all the time or I'd be a zombie!!). It's the only thing along with heat and sitting in my massage chair that helps. Hang in there.{{Hugs}}💕🙏🏻🌻

I have heard from many people that drinking pickle juice helps. I have not tried it personally. Maybe it is a southern thing?

That would give me heartburn for sure!!!

Octobot, I'm just catching up on posts, and I hope you've had some improvement by now. I've taken a rx muscle relaxer called Parafon Forte (aka: Chlorzoxazone) since the last neck surgery in 1995. They tried me on Flexeril but it wouldn't work for me. I use to get really bad spasms that would lock my back up and I'd be in bed for days. Sometimes they'd even trigger migraines. When everyone on here mentioned magnesium I started taking it daily. It has honestly decreased how many spasms I get and the severity, so I'm using less of the rx meds. I hope you are feeling much better. Hugs& prayers! 🙂💕🙏🌼
