Can't go through this again

Aug 21, 2016 3:32 PM

Hello I'm new to this forum, but I really need a place to vent. I've been dealing with chronic pain for 18 years now. Originally hurt my back in a car accident and like most idiots didn't get it looked at until it was too late I thought going on pain meds 4 years spent thousands on everything from Chiropractic to acupuncture to inversion therapy. Eventually I had my L4 through S1 fused. And then about a year later was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis.
Started taking the actual painkillers shortly before my surgery and honestly they are the only reason I can get up in the morning and sleep at nite. About a year ago my Dr was arrested for tax evasion. It then took me 4 months to even get another doctor to agree to see me. And I've been going to that doctor ever since and it's gone well. Unfortunately last Thursday the day before I'm supposed to get my refill my doctor sadly died. When his office lady called all she said was the doctor has passed away you need to find a new doctor. And after spending all day Friday calling 100 offices again I was told all the pain clinics have a 3 to 5 month wait. And as soon as anybody here's the word pain they immediately say they can't take me as a patient.
Sorry for the giant wall of text any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated I honestly don't think I'd survive another 4 month wait

Hi Tanderson1982
My heart goes out to you❀ I'm pretty new to this forum as well and I'm so grateful to have found it, everyone here is awesome and please vent as much as you like we're all here to listen and we get it😊 and your not alone.πŸ‘¬πŸ‘πŸ‘«
I had a horrible time trying to get treated much less seen by a Doctor due to insurance issues and my own lack of knowledge.
I even went to Mexico last year by bus to visit a friend and see a Doctor and finally get an MRI all I could afford was a trip by bus 28 hours to try and get answers.
I was diagnosed with Ankyolosing Spondilitis but I feel there is more going on.
About 3 week's ago the pain was so bad had to go to ER by ambulance (don't know how I'm going to pay for it yet but I don't regret it) they gave me morphine as usual and strong pain killers, they told me to see a Doctor ASAP I told them I could not find one, the social worker at the hospital gave me a few numbers to call to try and find a Doctor and told me to emphasize the pain issue and if they don't have a spot soon to make an appointment and to have them put me on a "to call list" in case someone cancels I can get in.
I live in southern CA so things might be different where your located but my plan is, when I finish the pain meds I have, that will be before my Doctor appointment, I will go back to the ER.
It's just a thought, I personally don't know what else to do and I'm at the end of my leash. You have probably tried the ER before but if you haven't it might be a start.
I'm sorry I'm not being more helpful,πŸ˜• but I'm hoping that if this doesn't work for your situation, that someone else can give you better advice than me, on this app.
I'm sending a huge hug your way and I'm rooting for you, I'm so sorry your having to go through this.😘❀

Tanderson1982, I can relate as I've had spine issues from 5 auto accidents since 1991 (only one was my fault). And youre right, it's a live and learn experience, an expensive one! I totally understand the predicament you are in. But you can and will get through this. You have us to lean on, so never feel alone!

My problems always fell outside the allowed time frame to file a claim, except my own wreck. I had 2 neck surgeries in the 90's by the same doc. In 2011 I returned to him for more problems and he said,"Well you need surgery again. But that means removing and replacing the plate & screws, which would be a very difficult & dangerous surgery. And I won't touch you because of the risks." So I asked my PCP to refer me for a second opinion because he scared the crap out of me & my hubby. It's really really hard to get another doc to go behind a previous neurosurgeon. To cut long story short... Three more docs & 4 years later an orthopedic neurosurgeon said the exact same thing (as the previous 3), but he ended his statement with, "and we need to take care of this STAT!" Needless to say we were scared and concerned for the risks. But here I sit 14 days post op, and nothing went wrong. I've not had but one headache, in the recovery room, while I'd been having them daily for years.

You may have to see a primary care doc (PCP) to get a referral. Specialists tend to accept patients who are referred better than self referrals, especially neurosurgeons & pain specialists. My surgeon needed a referral for insurance protocol. Don't be afraid to use an ER if necessary, or a PCP. Also don't be afraid to look outside your area if necessary. Get all your records from all previous docs that you can. I've had to travel out of state 3x and accross state 6x. It's very hard on the body but just pace your time riding with rest stops of stretching and walking. I waited 4 years for surgery, and thankfully had been under my PCP 27+ years so he had no problems giving me pain meds. I'm allergic to most, "all the good stuff" everyone says! Lol πŸ˜‰ Take a deep, slow breath then exhale slowly. One day at a time, one hour at a time, one step at a time. It may even benefit you to keep your reason for a new doctor as, " my doctor passed away unexpectedly, and I need a new doctor to pick up my care. I can get my records." Keep it short and simple. Remember too that all his other patients are doc-shopping also. Good luck with hugs, love, & prayers for a good caring doctor! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΈ

Hi 😊

I am in the uk so don't have any advice as things are a bit different here but wanted to say I understand being frustrated, in pain and having to wait a long time for help. (I made a post a few days ago about my struggles with back pain titled 'spondylitis' - I'm looking at a 4 month wait to see a rheumatologist)

I hope you can find a doctor and get yourself comfortable πŸ˜˜β€οΈπŸ’
