Central Sensitization or Something New?

Feb 27, 2018 8:51 PM

Hey y'all-
Ive had chronic unexplained sciatica for 4+ years and over the last few months or so I have become acutely aware of similar random buzzing sensations and small but numerous muscle spasms throughout my entire body. I've taken magnesium to rule out a deficiency and it has made no difference.

I've had sciatica for so long I don't remember what normal is anymore, so I'm having trouble distinguishing if I'm hyper honed into the nervey sensation now and am just super aware of it, or if this is something completely new. My doctor has previously said I have some sensitization to pain and I don't know how to tell if its important or not to what's going on.

I was wondered if anyone developed any techniques that help them distinguish their increased sensitivity to pain from their condition from new pain?

Alternatively I was previously on 300mg of Lyrica p/d and have been off it for 4+ months, has anyone experienced similar sensitivity post meds?

Have you had an MRI of your thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine? If so, did the MRI show any nerve entrapment, spinal stenosis or herniated discs?

I have only had an mri on my lumbar which was clear. They duspect Piriformis syndrome at this stage, with the nerve possibly running through the muscle.

Hi Sazvivin, I have this condition as part of my pain syndrome. I'm very tired today and will try to make a few recommendations but will have to edit this later to add the rest.

Can you try to describe your symptoms a bit more?

Also, could you try to ask your doctor for an brain and full spine MRI with + without contrast?

Where do you experience the buzzing sensations? Do you experience any other types of sensation? Is it in the same place or at the same time as spasms? If so how often?

These are all things to think about and to put here if you can that will help to distinguish between central sensitisation and other conditions

Hey TiredinPain I'll try to answer although its funny I haven't thought about all of them so its also a good starting point.

I experience them occasionally all over, but specifically my left hand, right foot and what feels like inside the left hand side of my chest. They arent constant like my sciatic pain in my left leg but the do last for a good while isually hours. They feel very similar but less severe than my sciatic pain.

I looked it up and have to apologise I'm getting muscle fascilations not spasms. They can last from 20 secs to 20 minutes. I get them in my legs, hands and eyes. Sometimes again, it feels like its happening in my chest. They don't seeeem to happen at the same time as the buzzing.

Thank you gor reframing it a bit!
