Curiuos about pain medication

Jan 22, 2017 10:53 AM

I am one week post op for lumbar fusion and decompression. I am taking 10mg oxycodone every 4 hours, 5mg valium every 6 and now they want to start me on Gabapentin. I know it is still early in recovery, I called me told them that the pain is still really bad and the numbness legs, feet and hips are a concern. I have been reading and talking to people that the mental health issues that are very common bring me to have reservations with starting this medication.
Can anyone tell me if Gabapentin is a good solution for nerve pain. Even with the other pain medication. I would like to go back to my oxymorphone which in my 14 years of a Pain was the only medication that EVER helped. I am trying to not get discouraged knowing it's still early in recovery. But all the oxycodone is doing now is making me able to get out of bed.
I appreciate your thoughts and reviews. God bless

Oxycodone is an opiate for pain. Gabapentin isn't an opiate. It is for nerve pain.

My doc had me on Lyrica & Cymbalta for nerve pain. I have tapered down to only the Cymbalta but it seems all the nerve related pain med's have similar possibilities for scary side effects! You can always try & if you don't get relief call back & they'll switch things up! Good luck!!! I hope you heel quickly!!

I'm on Percoset for the same injury, pain. Unfortunately mine is inoperable. I was in Gabapentin too but it didn't help any, just made me dizzy and bad head aches. You have to find what works for u since we all react different to different meds. Cymbalta, for example, made me feel like someone was hitting me with a stun gun, almost crashed my car because the shocks were random and would come out of no where. Lyrica has helped my nerve pain a little in the past. Unfortunately i wish i could be more help but mine is at the point where they told me to get used to a walker and expect a wheel chair in the future.

Lyrica helps both the nerve pain and fibro pain. I don't think fibro pain is all nerve pain.

I couldn't take cymbalta. It worked great for 6 months but then started causing more pain and psychological symptoms. I'm on gabapentin for neuropathies and it works well. I take tramadol when I'm in a flare or breakthrough pain.
