Cymbalta and Fibro

Feb 20, 2016 11:33 PM

What does everyone think of Cymbalta? What experiences do you have? My pain with the fibro keeps progressing and getting way worse.

Feb 21, 2016 12:41 AM

Hi Tiff, I have been on Cymbalta Just recently it was increased from 60 mg to 120 mg by my PCP. My Rhuemotologist put me on it after my PCP recommended it. She only put me on a lower dose. Anyway I have not noticed a difference. My PCP says it helps with pain. Not for me that I've noticed. I have read on here some people have had negative results and no benefit. I keep taking it hoping one day something will work.

Feb 21, 2016 1:03 AM

Thank you, Mysisterskeeper. I'm on 60 mg and don't notice a difference. I am so tired of the pain.

Feb 21, 2016 4:22 AM

Tiff, I was on Cymbalta and had horrible side effects. It made my already existing depression worse and it made me feel very odd. I was agitated and shaky and I began to feel suicidal. I was immediately removed from the medication and my meds were changed around. I don't take any biologics because they didn't help my nerve pain and the side effects were not good for me either. I was on Neurontin, gabapenten, etc. so there isn't any other medication in that category that I was willing to take. So, I cope as best I can with the nerve pain and then the other meds for my other pain. It's different for everyone. Maybe it will work for you, anything's possible. {{{Hugs}}} πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»

Thank you for being so open with me, Alwayzinpain. I have a lot to think about and consider.

Feb 21, 2016 5:31 AM

Cymbalta is the worst drug I have ever had. It had hundreds of serious side effects, which they do not even mention. I got Carpul Tunnel and had to have a serious hand operation. Did not help, stopped using Cymbalta and both hands were normal in 2 days!!!

Feb 21, 2016 5:35 AM

Try Lirika, at least that is what it is called in South Africa, no side effects and works. Fybro is really a test to your endurance, especially if it is on top of Depression and Anxiety!!! Good luck my friend, I know what you are going through.

I love Cymbalta. It has worked on my pain much more than my pain medicine. I noticed it within a week. I have enjoyed taking it ever since. I was able to start doing things that I had not been able to do in a long time. I am going through a real rough patch right now for the past month. But Cymbalta had given me a new lease on life that I will never regret.

Feb 21, 2016 9:23 AM

Tiff123, I had both gold and bad side effects on cymbalta. I started taking it, I think at the 30 mg then increased to 60 mg, always taken at bedtime. I was put on it for the fibro as well as the depression. I could immediately tell I felt better, with depression & pain, after two weeks. It lasted for 6 mods, then I started having worse pain, insomnia, agitation, depression, anxiety, all of it worsened. I was very moody, to young between crying and happy. At 9 mods my rheumy doc asked me if I'd been having any suicidal thoughts, and I replied, "No I don't want to kill myself. But I could care less if I died tomorrow.". She turned and looked at me and asked how long I'd felt that way and I told her it started after 6-7 months, as my pain, depression, and moodiness worsened. She said the suicidal ideations starting, along with the depression and moodiness was all side effects, as well as the increased pain. She weaned my dosage down in 3 weeks time and I started having withdrawal symptoms. I asked my PCP and told him what was happening and he immediately called in my old stand by (really old but good med for me), Pamelor/Nortriptyline. I was then sent to a psych who wanted to try other meds instead, but I told her no because I'd tried multiple major antidepressants over 3 years from my PCP and has reactions to all of them. Keep in mind that I've had 28 years of major depression & anxiety issues. She ordered a genetic spit test to see how I metabolized meds, and it turned out I don't metabolize benzodiazepine meds properly, not do I absorb & metabolize B Vitamins, especially folate. I sent remember the first gene defect but the B Vitamins one is a MTHFR gene defect. Ferretbandit & AlwayZ are two others on here with that same defect. I also have a large allergy to pain meds, so I'm very limited at what meds I can take, and I try my best to get by with Tylenol Arthritis, Aleve, and the gabapentin for neuropathy (at a low dose). I have Tramadol and Parafon Forte muscle relaxers for real bad fibro days. Ironically just last May I was dx with Sjogrens, and after starting the Plaquenil I've had a great improvement in daily pain, including the fibro. It's been a blessing for me.

But again, not everyone has the same outcome with every medication. Try not to stress yourself over the bad experiences some of us have had, and are you going to be one of us. Instead educate yourself about all your meds, via www.drugs.com website. Know ahead what possible bad effects could happen, so that when it does you aren't caught unaware like I was. I was a literal basket case going through withdrawals. I came real close to admitting myself to a psych ward because instinctively I knew something was wrong but didn't know what. Thankfully due to insurance changed last year I am back under my psych doc from 28 years ago, and he knows me and my med issues very well. Good luck, & Good bless you with gold results for treatment that will help! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I've been trying to get off of Cymbalta for some time now because of money, and the withdrawal is horrific. I went from 120 mg to 60 and I've been on 60 for a month and still getting blinding headaches and head shocks and sick to stomach and really blue. I didn't think it was that bad until I started coming off of it.

Feb 21, 2016 6:23 PM

Phoenix, take it slow and be careful. I went through doctor's weaning in 3 weeks & immediate withdrawals. No fun and frightening! Hugs, love, & prayers you'll get off safely & soon!! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I had to stop taking cymbalta it made me sick

Feb 21, 2016 9:09 PM

Cymbalta is a very dangerous drug and I don't think that all the proper long term testing was done before they released it. Only my opinion, because I experienced and majority feedback from others is very negative...

Feb 22, 2016 12:55 AM

I recently read that the makers of it and lyrica may have been lying about its ability to ease pain. It may also increase the chances of early dementia. Its orginal use was a short term boost to antidepressants not a nerve pain med.

Feb 22, 2016 10:38 PM

HATE IT WITH PASSION BEYOND WORDS!!! I was so terribly nauseous and miserable I became depressed and I hurt! The testing is subject. It is newer so it has "better" aka it was more widely tested on different groups. However, it's results were *barely* statiscially significant in regards to efficacy. It barely outperformed predessorors for depression. And it's side effects are MUCH worse than earlier/similar meds. Docs/insurance companies like it because they tested it with a lot of groups so it is not used "off lable" like many meds used for pain/fibro/CRPS. The testing is technically better (in comparison to other testing). But the results for patients- NOT better in so many ways. That being said, some people like it. Me, I hiss at the TV when the Damn commercial for Cymbalta comes on. I HATE it!!!

Feb 23, 2016 5:55 AM

I agree 100%, very dangerous drug. Imagine what the long term effects might be? I had a Carpul Tunnel operation due to side effects of this rubbish. Stopped using it and both hands cleared up in 2 days.

Feb 23, 2016 5:57 AM

People need to be warned but it's not happening.... Money walks and ....

Feb 23, 2016 7:43 AM

Lyrica did terrible things to me. Weight gain and swelling

Feb 23, 2016 9:31 AM

Gardener, it did the same to me; increased depression & pain behind belief!

Feb 23, 2016 9:36 AM

It's sad that Cymbalta is touted as "awesome" when it's NOT!! I even tried to argue the findings w my PM. He wouldn't agree that the findings didn't support its claims 😞 but he did take me off it- after 3months of MISERY!!! I was also mad because he said (and literature said) not to stop it suddenly. So I waited for the "magic" instructions to stop it safely. .....I was on the lowest dose, so I was told just to quit. Really?? Really?? I waited for that?? Now, I don't counsel anyone to quit based on my experience!! But I was mad that I waited for (unneeded) permission πŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΏπŸ‘Ώ

Everyone can report based side effects through the FDA website. That actually helps. The website below is helpful. πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Feb 24, 2016 6:06 AM

Cymbalta is a terrible drug. My prayers are with you.

Feb 24, 2016 9:13 AM

I'm currently on 90... It's generally a love it or hate it very polarizing snri. However I have had no positive or negative effects from it. i've been on it about a month and a half, started at 30, 60, then 90. I asked my pdoc yesterday to begin taking me off it- the tapering takes a couple weeks.

Sep 19, 2016 11:41 AM

I was just give a prescription for Cymbalta, I want to try low dose netrexal I've heard so much good about it I'm nervous to have to detox off pain meds first, so they gave me the Cymbalta today. Reading all the messages about it now I'm worried since my anxiety is worse as my pains are worse. Ugh

Sep 19, 2016 12:23 PM

Yes, I'm sitting on a script for it too (fibro... And will see how it is before my next Dr appt ... I am a light weight for most meds ... Tried gabapentin last month, meh. Didn't help enough to balance out the negs ... Sleeplessness, headaches and out of it.
I think they like the cymbalta since it is also recommended for anxiety and depression ... Trying it without enthusiasm.
Frustrating reading about all these meds and the side effects but it does seem like everyone is so different.
Good luck ...

If you have the 45.00 copay go to goods. Com and get you a coupon for any meds actually. I just downloaded the app. I'll give it a shot I guess for 30 days hopefully it will help.

Sep 19, 2016 2:48 PM

Thanks for the info ... In Canada not sure if it's applicable.
Already got it filled. Just worried about being out of it during the day ... Hard to tell what may happen ... hoping it helps as well.

Sep 19, 2016 5:47 PM

Tiff123, while I don't have fibro, I was put on Cymbalta for my chronic pain and it did nothing. I went from 10-60-100mg with zero results.

Sep 20, 2016 2:51 AM

Yes Cymbalta is a bad one! Especially for me, it didn't help much at all. But then, not much is these daysπŸ˜“
