What gotobef said and sometimes using my Tens machine helps. I put the pads above the area of pain and sometimes on the muscle itself and have it on low, normally 2, for 15 minutes then I leave it off for 10-15 minutes and repeat 3 or 4 times. If that doesn't work I get a face cloth put hot water on it (as hot as I can touch) and ring it out. I put that on my neck and shoulders then when it starts to cool down a bit I spray magnesium spray on the area and massage in, doing this opens the pours in the skin so the spray is easily absorbed into the skin and helps to sooth the muscles. I also then heat up my neck warmer wheatgerm microwave beanbag and put that on my neck and shoulders to sooth and loosen the muscles further while the magnesium is absorbed.
