Does anyone else have trouble with stretching??

Feb 19, 2016 5:47 PM

I have ankylosing spondylitis and am very tight in my neck and shoulders.

I am always told to keep stretching (especially side to side with my neck) but this is sometimes when I get spasms.

The weird part is that my neck doesn't spasm when I stretch, but rather when I go to return to the face forward position. Hopefully that makes sense.

Does anyone have this happen to them or have any suggestions?

Green23, I get muscle spasms in my side rib cage areas, top of my thoracic/neck junction, and lumbar sometimes. I sometimes turn my head to the left and my head & neck will slightly begin to jerk like it's trying to turn back forward but it's stuck, like a tic almost. I have to be very careful not to over stretch or over use, especially my arms & lumbar. I do gentle stretches just to the point of feeling it. I use warm showers to loosen up also, as well as voltaren gel ointment. 🙂💕🙏🌼

How you described your neck almost jerking like it's stuck is exactly what happens to me... You just explained it a lot better lol. I also have to be super careful not to overstretch but it's frustrating because sometimes it feels like you are hardly stretching and it still happens! Oh and voltaren extra strength is my best friend!

Lol, I asked my hubby one night if my head was actually jerking and he said it looked like a stuck cog wheel on his grandfather's farm!

I do, and one thing that seems to help is focusing on stretching my chest, and hips. It seems to help relax the back, instead of hurting worse. There's the pigeon yoga pose (which feels really good for me, but or bodies may be very different)

I struggle with stretching and spasms too. In fact on Tuesday I was doing some back stretching (not pushing too far) and something in my shoulder randomly went pop. The shoulder hurt for about an hour total but I'm still dealing with the severe tension headache and back pain that resulted from all the surrounding muscles freaking out. I've been trying to stretch them out but it seems that if i stretch one part something else cramps.
I've also had where i stretch one muscle group and the opposing group freaks out. My favorite (sarcasm) had to be my leg. My calf started cramping so i tried stretching that only to have the little muscles on either side of the shin cramp up. Couldn't stretch one without cramping up the other.

Ouch Gotobef!! I'm sorry you have a headache. I get those too when my right shoulder muscles knot up (like an egg under the skin). When my back starts doing this I either have to get a warm shower & try stretching very lightly, then hear &/or I've after. I hope you feel better soon! 🙂💕🙏

I have to have my Carers stretch my legs and arms twice a day for about 45mins, The spinal rehab team taught them all how to stretch all my muscles, so we do it first thing in the morning and then around 6-7pm

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that struggles with this. I really want to stay flexible and keep my muscles loose but it's a balancing act!
