Driving...nervous bout getting behind the wheel again

Nov 12, 2015 1:45 PM

So its been about 5 weeks since my surgery and I don't know how many months since I began having problems with dizziness and loss of focus but it's getting to a point now where I am far enough outside of surgery I have one more week before I'm totally released but the time has come that I really need to go to the grocery store and pick up some stuff for the family. to try to help take some of the pressure off of my mom and now my sister is sick .
however the idea of getting behind the wheel again is nerve wracking considering I'm on some new medication that does worsen my dizziness and concentration. the store isn't really that far from my home and I have gone to the store and grocery shopped alone before its taking me awhile to get the shopping done but it gets done.
any tips or advice you guys would have as far as how I should proceed with going or when getting behind the wheel again. I'm currently taking lyrica, today will be the first day that I'm actually increasing my dosage per doctor's instructions. plus I'm starting my hormone therapy today or tomorrow ,
however I still need to find a way to live a more productive life. the last few months have been with me spending most of my day laying off lay on my back or just laying around on the couch with the fatigue or simply feeling like crap, however I've got to try to find the way to get my life back somehow or a part of my life as far as you know traveling outside of the house but any ideas or tips you guys have will be greatly appreciated

Could you talk to your doctor about it maybe? Or if you could. Go to an empty parking lot with someone in the car with you and drive around a bit and see if you can get use to driving just to see how you'll do with it.
Sorry if I'm not much help. I've never driven lol

Newfibrogirl, I had to go without driving for 6 months after my last neck surgery. Driving again was nerve wracking at first. I kept it to short, close by destinations at first. After 1-2 weeks I was doing just fine.

However, you need to go before you take any meds that may make you dizzy, or else wait until you know you aren't affected. If you were to be stopped for weaving or get in an accident, you could be charged with driving under the influence of meds. I know many who've actually gone to jail and lost their license. I have to be careful not to drive after taking my muscle relaxers. Just take it slow & steady, and you'll be fine. 🙏🌼
