Emergency cervical fusion

May 08, 2017 7:15 PM

Has anyone had an emergency cervical fusion? I've had two about a year apart. The first was anterior the second was both anterior and posterior levels c2-7. I didn't have an accident. But I did have an abusive husband. I don't remember much about either surgery or what led up to it. All I know is that my surgeon said my spinal cord had been severed by its own bone within a hair of me becoming a quadrapalegic. None of my doctors can really give me any information or help. I've also had lumbar surgery and two knee surgeries. I get random nerve pain all over and spasms and twitching. My hands shake my legs sometimes go out on me and my leg gets numb. I have terrible TMJ and occipital neruralgia. Amongst many other things. Osteoarthritis through my spine and facet joints etc. I guess I just wish I had more information on the spinal cord issue. I can walk aside from bad back pain and the leg issues. I use a cane most days. Are these symptoms going to be permanent. The last surgery was in 2012. I thought it would be getting better by now. I also have fibromyalgia on top of it all. My doctors won't give me pain meds either. Just gabapentin and backofen. I can't live like this much longer. I used to be extremely active. Backpacker, gymnastics coach, gardener and mrs fix it. I want my life back. But no doctors seem to know what to do or want to help. I'm only 41. How will I endure a half a lifetime more of this?! Any help is much appreciated. 😔

So sorry. I understand I have similar issues. L3,L5 and S1 were damaged and my heel bones crushed. I've had 2 foot procedures done and going into ankle surgery again Friday 😣 it's hell having both major foot and back problems than starting pain everywhere between!

Wish I could help. I don't know anything about that.

Zip, I've recently been reading material about pain from Dr Ruth Darnell. I'm from Europe but I understand she's from- and based in the USA. She has had chronic pain herself & is an MD in pain management. I don't have her email address to hand but she's available on LinkedIn. Maybe she could recommend some extra input from drs more au fait with complex pain. Some of her stuff is about non-pharma interventions but she definitely understands need for meds too, it seems. Sorry you are experiencing so much pain. Have they offered you lidocaine or morphine skin patches for comfort?

Not an easy road and I wish you the best of luck in finding the answers and support you need for yours.

Oh wow! Thank you so much! I'll definitely look into it. I do have lidocaine cream which does help with the surface pain. I wish you all the best as well!

Hi hun, sorry bout all this! I have many of the same Physical issues.
Have you tried medical marijuana or CBD oil? Both work wonders for my pains!
Gentle Hugs

Thanks joey311! Yes I've used it for pain for quite awhile and it does help a lot. I live in Pa where they haven't gotten anything in place yet for medical. The creams and capsules of oil seem to work best for melong term. The problem is I can't afford it. Not enough to really help anyway. Just waiting. My pain doctor is not a fan of it so I don't see him giving me a prescription anytime soon. Ugh. Gentle hugs to you too!

I know, I can't afford them either. Unfortunately, not legal here & my drs aren't into those, only prescriptions They say they haven't seen any proof they help but there's tons proof out there.
Hope you had a good day!
