Experiences with Gabapentin?

Feb 27, 2016 2:54 AM

So I'm nearly 18 and my doctor has tried me on pretty much any painkiller he can (paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen, codeine, nefopam) all to no avail with me getting ill with all of them, I finally suggested something that works in a different way and suggested gabapentin, my mam has terrible reactions to gabapentin, I was wondering how it mames anyone who it works for feel, any side effects or is it almost like a wonder drug if you don't react to it?

Feb 27, 2016 3:50 AM

It is a good drug. I use it for Fibromyalgia and other body aches. It is used for nerve pain. But nerve pain can affect the muscles and all over pain as well so it can be quite effective. I am sorry that you are so young and in so much pain. That really bothers me to hear when it is someone so young. I hope they can find some medicine to make your pain more manageable. Best wishes.

Feb 27, 2016 3:59 AM

That sounds like it will be really good if I don't react to it then, yeah, I've always been in pain so it's all I've ever known really, they're trying different things so fingers crossed, I hope you're on the up and up x

Feb 27, 2016 4:08 AM

Just in some pain tonight. I have been in pain for a few nights now. I have been in a lot of pain since 1999 when I was in a ladder accident and fell 20 feet off the ladder. I haven't been the same since then but I am coping like the rest of us. We are all just trying to find the best thing that works and I hope that you find yours. Where are you from. I am from the USA. The reason I ask is we call Tylenol acetaminophen and I think you all call it Paracetamol.

Feb 27, 2016 4:15 AM

Oh god, my mam has fibro too, she had it triggered from a car accident she had and my nana has it so I have an understanding of what you're going through, I'm from England, and yeah, I think you call it Tylenol and we call it paracetamol

Feb 27, 2016 4:47 AM

Hi there, I'm from England as well. I've been on gabapatin, I suffer with fibromyalgia and rheumatic atheritis. It worked well for me, as for side effects sorry can't tell you about that. I'm on so many tablet's that I sound like a rattle!! Lol! Sorry to hear you are so young and got to deal with this. I was 19 when I first started with the pain. Just try it, if you find it doesn't work for you then try another. There will be one that works for you, and everyone reacts differently to each one. Good luck and hope it does work for you xx

Feb 27, 2016 5:13 AM

I had terrible side effects. Its method of action causes you to not store memory properly. I had vision changes, cognitive imparements, apashia, memory loss and after being on it for a year or so i started having high bp. I was so desperate for the relief it provided I continued for 18 months. Coming off was terrible. Titrating down for months with bizarre sude effects with dosage changes. I do not think it should be approved for use.

Feb 27, 2016 5:46 AM

Ross, I'm the same, I constantly have the equivalent of a pharmacy in my bag 😂 the way I see it is, If I didn't have to deal with it, someone else would and they might not be able to cope with it like I can 😕 thank you and I hope your condition improves a bit, I feel like the best thing we can hope for is a lower baseline pain and be able to do more

Feb 27, 2016 5:47 AM

Risa* sorry, autocorrect always gets me 😂

Feb 27, 2016 5:52 AM

HngryTgr, my mam had similar reaction, she's all for me trying anything to help my pain, and my GP knows that I wouldn't do anything I didn't feel necessary, I wasn't sure what the side effects were and I wanted to know just so I was aware of them when trying it, thank you though

Feb 27, 2016 5:54 AM

Read the docs that come with the pills. The pharmacist can give them to you. Report all side effects and keep the oaperwork to show your doc.

Feb 27, 2016 6:00 AM

I will, I'm anticipating some side effects, I just obviosly don't know what they'll be yet

Feb 27, 2016 6:50 AM

I'm sorry to hear you're just 18 and dealing with all these complicated problems! I was 19 when I got injured and got CRPS so I know you're not in for an easy ride. This will be a big life challenge for you to get through, and it is going to take a lot of strength from you and your loved ones. I'm keeping you in my prayers and I hope the gaba Helps you!

Feb 27, 2016 8:04 AM

Yeah, I mean, I'm used to it so I feel like it's the old "is it better to have had and lost or never had at all?" But I'm muddling through, I hope you improve a bit and are able to do more of what you want!

Feb 27, 2016 9:29 AM

I tried it many years ago for my fibro, and I didn't notice any difference. Same with Topamax. But I had other unaddressed problems that may have caused that.
But I did notice a big difference with antidepressants. Currently Wellbutrin.
Do NOT go for Effexor, it has HORRIBLE withdrawal symptoms that exactly mimic a fibro flare!
The Myers cocktail helped as well for me.
I hope the Gaba works for you, sweetheart, pain sucks!

Feb 27, 2016 10:34 AM

My mam wants to try me on cymbalta but I'm not sure if they'd let me, I've tried fluoxitine but that made my mood worse and the pain got worse too, I start the gabapentin on Monday so fingers crossed it helps

Feb 27, 2016 10:58 AM

I use Gabapentin and Cymbalta for fibromyalgia. They both work great for pain however, it still comes back but they both really helps a lot.

Feb 27, 2016 11:02 AM

I've heard mixed things, it either helps a lot or causes more problems than it's worth, I'm hoping the first is true for me

Feb 27, 2016 11:05 AM

I became a nightmare but,then I switched to lyrica

Feb 27, 2016 11:08 AM

I'm willing to try anything so if this doesn't work, I'll try another and keep with that until I improve even a little bit

Feb 27, 2016 11:10 AM

Got too, and keep positive, and hold onto faith. It only has to get better that what I keep telling myself.;+)

Feb 27, 2016 11:12 AM

I try to, it can be difficult sometimes but I'm learning ways to cope, thank you all so much

Feb 27, 2016 1:24 PM

I've been on it , and was taken off of it with in a month due to terrible.side affects (hallucinations, bad thoughts, vomiring, shallow breathing) but I have trouble with medicines. So idk

Feb 27, 2016 1:53 PM

Oh wow, I hope I don't have those but I know there's a chance I'll get them, idk, have you found anything that works?

Feb 27, 2016 4:53 PM

I have used it for 6 months and its working well so far. I'm very intolerant to most meds so I'm on a low dose right now. Hugs & prayers you do well with it. 🙂💕🙏🌼

Feb 27, 2016 4:56 PM

I can't take any of the meds they've tried me on yet, they've all made me ill, they're starting me off on a low dose and if it works they're going to up it and if it doesn't work they're referring me to the pain clinic to see what they can do, I hope it continues to help you x

Feb 27, 2016 6:31 PM

I didn't get any relief from it and also I gained fifty lbs in less than four months, and that was while dieting. It's almost a year since coming off of it and I'm still not able to lose that weight. Just be careful and tell the doc of anything that's not normal for you. I hope it helps!

Feb 28, 2016 4:02 AM

Yes terrible ones. Read the side effects and tell your doc the second you have ANY

Feb 28, 2016 4:04 AM

Oh god, it does seem like one of those that if It works, it improves your condition a lot but if it doesn't help it's hell

Feb 28, 2016 4:05 AM

It was terrible for me. It left lasting scars. Memory loss cognitive problems hbp. Terrible.

Feb 28, 2016 12:16 PM

I am on Gabapetien now, the doctor recently upped my dosage to 300 in the morning and 600 at bedtime. It's seemingly to help OK but it still feels like I have tiny little ninjas attacking the bottom's of my feet with samurai sword's every time I walk and same with my wrists every time I have to use them to get up. It's lessened some,so I'm hopeful.

Feb 28, 2016 12:23 PM

Oh gosh, I hope that does help your pain, I get a pain sort of like that in my shoulder/back and it's so painful, I hope the increase helps!!!

Feb 28, 2016 12:31 PM

It's helped the pain in my shoulder / back area like yours only flairs up every now and again like yesterday but that is because we took a 10 hour road trip to see one of Hubby's friend's, Thank God that 10 hours was a round trip total lol!

Feb 28, 2016 12:35 PM

Oh god, I struggle being in the car for an hour, let alone 5 hiurs

Feb 28, 2016 12:38 PM

Lol! I hear you there, I am but am not looking forward to June, as I am going to Florida and that is a 1000+ mile one way drive for us.

Feb 28, 2016 12:39 PM

Smirking at Moparmom 😉 tiny little ninjas with samurai swords... Clever! I also giggled at the comment of something referring to an assortment/plethora of drugs to take in a day. <-- totally understand that!
I do hope you find some relief soon! I have a pain management Doctor, & have recently been switched from Vicodin to OxyContins starting tomorrow. The vicodins short term pain relief just wasn't working for me anymore. They are moving me to the longer lasting ones. I am also on 120mg of Cymbalta - they seem to be helping as well. I hope you find some relief ASAP!!

Feb 28, 2016 12:44 PM

Me too, I see a pain management doctor so my hydrocodone came in handy along with my soma so I was feeling pretty good by the time I got home lol! Good enough for me not to want to move once my hiney hit my bed lol!

Feb 29, 2016 12:04 AM

Gabapentin did not even touch my nerve pain. Not at all.

Feb 29, 2016 3:03 AM

Helps my nerve pain but I'm suspicious that it's making me Crave sweets and carbohydrates. Hope it helps you without side effects.

Feb 29, 2016 10:01 AM

I take it for fibro and epilepsy, and it worked for me, sometimes feel hungover, and weight gain, but that's all really, good luck

Mar 01, 2016 6:20 PM

Sorry to hear you're in so much pain. I started this medication last month. I stepped up slowly. The first week I was hallucinating a little bit. I was slightly dizzy. I had short term memory issues. Nothing was too overwhelming. It was almost funny. I'd ask my husband to feed the dogs, he would, right in front of me. Five minutes later I would ask again, a little snarky. He'd say he'd just fed them. Five minutes later, same thing. Now, a month in, those side effects are mostly gone (still a little bit of a memory issue, but much less noticeable). It has relieved pain in areas I had forgotten hurt so badly. It's not really helping my arm pain, but with the back and leg pain reduced I have 'room' to better handle the arm pain.

I hope it works for with little to no side effects. Take care.

Mar 02, 2016 1:13 AM

I'm worried I might get memory issues because I'm still at college and need my memory to pass my exams, my pain is worst in my back and legs so I'm hoping that it helps them, thank your you take care too 😊

Mar 02, 2016 9:04 AM

Hi I have been on gabapentin for over a year now. I'm on 1200 mg aday
The doc has put the dosage up over the year because I found the effects wore of over a period of 3 months. I do have side effects with them. A bitter taste in my mouth. Very dry skin. Hair going thin .and i have put lots of waght on .forgetting. I do suffer from cps central pain syndrome and spondyloathropee. And a few other problems. I do hope you will find the right medication that suits you. Good luck.

Mar 02, 2016 9:10 AM

I was warned of another weird side effect of gaba. The pain clinic doc said my urine might turn purple!?! That would have scared me. I do have the extreme dry skin & weight gain but she's titrating me of it in favor of, ummm, I forget. Smiles & good day.

Mar 12, 2016 3:23 PM

I was on lyrica for over a year. But i cant afford the copay so my doc switched me to Gaba. I have to take it every 8 hours and it does not help as much as the lyrica did at 12hours. I am struggling with my weight gain. Trying hard to loose the 50lbs i put on last year. So far i just managed to stop gaining more.

Mar 12, 2016 4:37 PM

I've been in it for a week and it doesn't seem to be doing much at all really, my pain is no different and all I've noticed is that I want sweets constantly

Mar 14, 2016 2:59 PM

For me, it took almost three weeks to show signs of helping. I, too, am craving sweets and savory junk food all day long! I'm starting to lose that battle, sadly.

Mar 14, 2016 3:03 PM

Yeah, I've been eating toast and sweets non-stop, it's still not helping the pain but it's only been a week and a half so I still have some hope, I hope you start to improve a bit, I know how bad it is when you start to decline, let's hope they find something that helps soon!

Mar 14, 2016 6:19 PM

Yep, sweets and carbs. So quick and easy to grab and eat & doesn't go bad fast in the fridge. It's bad, I know; but I can't cook anymore for safety reasons. I rarely go out except to empty garbage.

Mar 14, 2016 7:03 PM

It has helped with my nerve pain, but at the expense of gaining nearly 100 pounds over the last 9mo-1yr. I am not sure it has been worth it... 😕

Mar 15, 2016 12:46 AM

My mam said I started to look like the "heavier side of the normal me" (after being on it for a week and a half) and when you're 17 that's a big thing so I'm monitoring what I'm eating and how much excercise I'm doing (If I can)

Mar 17, 2016 12:01 PM

My doctor and I decided the gabapentin wasn't working so he's swapped me into pregabalim/lyrica, fingers crossed!

Mar 17, 2016 12:19 PM

Gabapentin works well for me but it's not my only med. A while back I got really foggy and couldn't find my words. I'd say turn at the next carrot- instead of corner; I was diagnosed with Gabapentin Toxicity. I make sure that I never use extra.

Mar 17, 2016 12:21 PM

Oh god, I hope it helps you improve soon!

Mar 19, 2016 4:07 AM

I took gabapentin for nerve pain for a slipped disk (it was resting on my S1 nerve) I was on a lot of medication at the time but taking gabapentin meant I could reduce some of the other pain medications I was taking at the time. I had no side effects. I was 13 at the time.

Mar 19, 2016 6:29 AM

I'm on 1200 mg aday. I find it gives me Brain fog. I do still have bad pain days so I wouldn't want the doctors to put it up any more I would rather him change it to something else. I am on alot of other meds.

Mar 19, 2016 6:47 AM

Different people have different reaction. Ask about other possibilities because I think there are variations of drugs that work in slightly different ways. At the end of the day, you need to be happy with what you're taking, when it's a complex issue there's no quick fix. Good luck!

Mar 19, 2016 6:52 AM

I've been moved on to lyrics because the gabapentin was just not working, I think you know pretty quickly if it will work for you and the side effects just weren't worth it for me

Mar 19, 2016 9:25 AM

In 2009 when rheumatologist diagnosed my Fibro he gave me Gabapentin it never helped me so after abt 2yrs i stopped taking it. Last yr my psychiatrist suggested i try it again for pain and mental health issues. When i started back on it I was dizzy brain fog worse and couldn't make decisions. My sister had back surgery it was a failure gabapentin helps her best. Oxycodone and those other pain meds cause her nausea and vomiting.

Mar 19, 2016 9:37 AM

I'm on 2400 mg it does cause me to forget things sometimes I have to raise it to 3200 MG but it's kind of like a sedative for me

Mar 24, 2016 10:00 PM

I can't take it. I had many physical reactions to it and mentally lost on it.

Mar 25, 2016 6:06 AM

It really does do me in. I'm on 1200 mg aday I find it confuses my mind .some days it seems I'm not here and when someone is talking to me it like there not there .It doesn't seem to help with the pain. It's not good for me I think I need to go and see my GP again.

Mar 25, 2016 6:11 PM

I was on 2400mg a day and I didn't find the pain was any easier. I was always exhausted (still am) I would sleep in for work or sleep through most of the morning when I should have been in work resulting in me being awol and I just felt completely not in control of myself. I have cut it myself from 2400 gradually to 600mg and I want off it completely if it doesn't help what is the point in taking it and not functioning right. It was interfering with my life too much without any benefit so speak to your GP first don't do it like I did without consulting them. My GP did offer me that solution of cutting down meds when I went to him about my fatigue but when I told him I already had he warned me never to do that again with any meds without consulting him first. He was glad I had the sense to go down gradually though. If it's not working why keep it on the list of the cocktail of meds we are already on. Hope u find something that helps u!! I'm still searching xxx

Mar 26, 2016 8:50 AM

My Gabapetien has been upped to 300 in the morning and 600 at night and works OK, but I still have swelling in my hands and feet and pain in my hands and feet. I can't wait until June 8th! I see the Rheumatologist doctor then for the first time! Maybe, just maybe they will figure out what mystery is causing all my problems lol!

Mar 26, 2016 8:59 AM

I'm back at the rheumy in May, can't come quick enough, I've been swapped to lyrica which has helped stabalise my pain but i still can't put weight on my left knee most days

Mar 26, 2016 9:15 AM

Have you tried a knee brace?

Mar 26, 2016 9:17 AM

I'm waiting on a referral to a musculoskeletal clinic, I asked my gp about it and he said to go to the clinic first then see what they say so for the time being on using a cane if I need to go to the shop or anything

Mar 26, 2016 9:30 AM

I remember when my daughter hurt her knee they told us to buy a knee brace and we found a good one at Walmart that like metal on both sides to keep her from turning the knee either way.I hope that your Doctor can help you, Prayer's are with you!

Mar 27, 2016 9:16 AM

I've found one tbats relatively cheap, if the musculoskeletal clinic doesn't help, I'm investing in it, I don't know what else I can do, even my partner has said it's not right, it's swollen sometimes and I can't put weight on it, I just hope I don't need surgery to help strengthen it, fingers crossed, my thoughts are with all of you!

Mar 27, 2016 8:43 PM

I just started 300 MG 3 times a day and I think it's making me nauseous a little.

Mar 28, 2016 2:54 AM

There are other membrane stabilizers on the market...speak with your physician about alternatives. Some are more expensive than others. Gaba and lyrica are not the only one they can try.

Mar 28, 2016 7:56 PM

Gabapentin is a nerve membrane modifier. All it does is make the pain signal move more slowly through the nerve. I've had no problem with it.

Mar 29, 2016 1:30 AM

I take it. I'm not sure if it helps with all my pain I deal with daily, as I still have so many bad days and the pills I take (Gab, along with many others) sometimes do not seem to work. I have noticed that if I skip a day or two from taking gab, when I do take it, within twenty minutes, I'm crashing hard. And I'll sleep for a good twelve hours!!!!! I haven't had any weight gain, but noticed I crave sweets, when I never liked sweets growing up lol.. But I don't take mine like I should only because I don't want to sleep my life away. And I noticed your body gets used to the pill quickly, you have to up your dose just to get any effect from it...

Apr 03, 2016 11:54 PM

Hello. New to this site. I am the mother of a 10 year old boy who was diagnosed with CRPS in the right knee and he did not walk for 3 months. He was given Gabapentin only after I suggested it. They said it could take 3 months to show any effect. I did not see any improvement, just a very hungry boy with loss of focus and increased stomach issues. Gabapentin works differently for different people so it is something you just have to try. My son's pain alleviated for a few months and the Gabapentin was stopped. 2 months later he has all over body pain, under the amplified pain umbrella.

Apr 04, 2016 5:43 AM

I started on 100mg of gabipentin 3 times a day.
It seems to help for a few months with the pain shooting down my leg.
Then it stopped working.
Doc uped the dose to 300mg 3 times a day.
The fist time I tried it, I could hardly function.
Felt drunk, dizzy, confused.
I stopped it, but pain was so bad I tried it again a few weeks later.
Just stuck with it and it leveled out ok.
It really helped my lower back and leg pain for about 2 years.
Now over the last 3 months, all the pain is coming back for some reason.
I can tell you it helped me alot for a few years.
I do notice sweet craving, and have fatigue that flares. Sleeping all day at times.
Finding it hard to work now.
Cain't hurt to try it and see if it works for you.
My mom tried it for her arthritus and she could not take it.
Never know how it will react with you.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Apr 04, 2016 12:44 PM

I have high allergies & sensitivities to meds. My doc originally started me at 300 mg, 3x a at, but it literally knocked me out all day. I'm now on 100 mg, 3x a at and so far I'm doing fine. Both I and my PCP are not sure about increasing it, since it's helping the neuropathies 75%.

Apr 04, 2016 3:24 PM

I had a horrible time with it.....my brain felt like is on a hot burner and sweat ....oh my god i really thought that i was going to combust into flames.....my mind was being cooked....made my pain and anxiety much worse......scary....very hyper, paced all the time.

Apr 04, 2016 5:04 PM

Gabapentin works for me better that pregabalin I had really bad side effects on that. I'm on the max gabapentin and I only realised how much it works when I tried the switch. But my friend was the opposite. It's all a trial and error. But one should work for you

Jun 01, 2016 12:26 PM

Hi just wondering have you tried Suboxone?

Jun 01, 2016 12:34 PM

No, I tried gabapentin and then pregabalin (lyrica) but neither of them worked without horrible side effects so I've been put on tramadol until after my exams

Jun 07, 2016 7:32 AM

thatEDSgirl I love Gabapentin, it basically saved me from being completely wheelchair bound. I started it in 2004 so I don't remember much but I do remember being tired when I first started It and when I was on a high dose it did cause depression but once we lowered the dose my depression improved greatly and I haven't had any problems since. I see you are on Tramadol, I'm on 50mgs once a day. It was actually my "as needed" medicine but it became a daily medication in 2007, I remember though when I was taking it as an "as needed" medicine every time I took my Tramadol it would make me drowsy and loopy and I felt high or euphoric, but once I started taking it every day the side effects subsided I am thankful for Tramadol and Gabapentin(daily) and my other pain medicines methadone(daily) and Oxycodone(as needed). I hope you find the medication that is a perfect fit for you.

Jun 07, 2016 8:04 AM

I've actually had to stop the tramadol too, it was causing ridiculous pain in my back and legs that I couldn't cope with, so my GP has since put me on 5ml of oramorph 4 times a day which is the best thing ever, I usually take 2ml 3 hours apart if I need it and it's the first one that actually gives me some relief

Jun 07, 2016 8:04 AM

I have been on gabapentin 2400mg. For at least 5 years. I don't think that it does anything! Certainly doesn't make me tired. Nothing does but Xanax. I am currently taking Soma, gabapentin, trazadone, and dilaudid. Thinking of getting a pump because everyone around me hassles me about my pills. I am sorry to hear that you are so young and dealing with this. No one understands my pain at all. This past month has been horrific. Good luck to everyone

Jun 07, 2016 9:09 PM

Gabepentin has worked great for me

Jun 13, 2016 4:11 PM

I also have fibro and degree disk and bone and tried gaba and I had horrible mood swings and irritability fighting with everyone! Try tho u never know . Idk if available by u but I used kadian for pain for a long time and it worked good.

Jun 14, 2016 12:17 PM

It worked well for me but had terrible problems coming off was good for anxiety.

Jun 14, 2016 1:44 PM

I think it made me gain weight and did not help for fibro pain.

Jun 15, 2016 12:23 AM

Gabapentin made me gain weight and put me in a cognitive fog. But it did help with the neuropathic nature of my pain.

Jun 15, 2016 7:19 AM

I take gabapentin for nerve pain. I like it. The only side affect I don't like is it makes me sleepy.

Jun 17, 2016 10:58 AM

My boyfriend and I needed it for separate issues during a similar period. Needless to say in some ways it helped but he was a zombie for lower back issues. My nerve issues it somewhat helped HOWEVER, watch your teeth!!! Can't stress this enough. It rots your teeth it's not listed as a side effect and long term PLUS higher doses can cause teeth issues. From my minimal use I have an indent under my gums I noticed several months later. For my BF the dentists were freaking out. They repaired his teeth at the beginning of the med and six months later had to do it all again. He met a dental hygensist recently and her husband went though similar a similar injury and had the same thing happen to his teeth. Nice to have confirmation. You can google gabapentin and teeth it's there.

Jun 25, 2016 8:01 PM

I had a bad experience with gabapentin. I was 5 days out from having 12 hours of spinal surgery, I was sent home from the hospital with a prescription of it.
I got it filled took it that night b4 bed, my mom came to check on me and she found me in a closet talking to my dead father of 25 years, and 12 staples were tore out of the insion.
I woke up in hospital next day remembering nothing

Jul 05, 2016 6:36 PM

Hi I have been on Gabapentin for over 10yrs now. I am now on a dosage of 4,800mg every 24hr. I don't really get any side-effects from it, except from when I take my bedtime dosage. Because my biggest dosage is taken then, it knocks me out for the night. It's a good med though for people who suffer from nerve pain, although originally used as an anti-epileptic medication x

Jul 05, 2016 9:47 PM

I'm afraid I can't help too much. I just started taking gabapentin on Sunday, and from what I've read, it can take up to 2 weeks to have the full effect. I'm curious to see how it will help me, too, if it does at all. It's technically for nerve pain (at least that's what I've read, and why my dr prescribed it for me). Hope it helps you.

Jul 05, 2016 11:28 PM

I was on gabapentin for a couple of weeks. It helps with the pain, but made me a complete Zombie. Couldn't focus, or put coherent thoughts together, and was continually tired. Kept falling asleep at work, and made many mistakes. Plus I had extreme gas and constipation.

Jul 13, 2016 8:33 PM

It didn't help me with my nerves pain at all, it made my BPD way worse. But it helps my step mom with her migraines. It's different for everyone:)

Jul 16, 2016 8:58 AM

It is good for fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which I have. I have been taken gabapentin for a little over a year now and I have not had any side effects. I'm on 300mg x 4 daily.

Jul 16, 2016 6:17 PM

I didnt like the side effects. I was so dizzy and out of it, i felt like i couldnt see straight, like i was drunk.

Jul 16, 2016 8:33 PM

That was a HORRIBLE drug for me! Within a week of taking it my L hand had closed into a fist and the arm curved upwards (without me noticing!). 7 days off and my arm uncurled but left it extremely week. It is now difficult for me to open my hand all the way and when I'm tired or in a flare my L hand will close and I have a hard time opening it.

Strangely, I can take Lyrica with almost no problems. I did have the blurry vision side effect while tapering up to my current dose (300mg BID). The blurry vision disappeared after about a week or too on my current dose.

I think Lyrica has caused me to gain some weight but it is worth it to me. If I don't take my Lyrica - by day 2 my muscles and nerves are screaming in pain and I can't get out of bed. So I make sure I always have some and get more before I run out.

Jul 16, 2016 8:40 PM

No, that med did not touch my nerve pain at all.

Jul 17, 2016 10:10 AM

I have taken Lyrica, but the hives and weight gain was out of control now I'm taking Cymbalta, gabapentine, celebrit, and baclofen I get a little relief but the pain gets worsen at times where I can't help myself

Jul 23, 2016 3:06 AM

EVIL DRUG for me but do fine on Max dose Lyrica (also take Cymbalta)

Apr 24, 2017 8:28 AM

I was on it for a few months but developed an allergic reaction to it and swelled up all over. Just watch out for signs of allergy.

Apr 24, 2017 5:18 PM

I heard you either do well or you don't. I do. I take 3600mg/day and it takes away a decent amount of my pain. I am also on Cymbalta and Baclofen as well. My med schedule makes me absentminded and I still have pain, but compared to what was there before I am happy. Just added low dose naltroxone and hoping that chips away further. I got to a place where I feel like Im treading water and want to be able to DO things without days of payback.

Apr 25, 2017 8:29 AM

I switched from Lyrica to Gabapentin. Gabapentin seems to not have side effects like the Lyrica did with me.

May 01, 2017 3:30 AM

I was on Gabapentin 600mg TDS (1,800mg/day) and 200mg PRN up to BD (up to an extra 400mg/day as needed). I found it helpful but it didn't help enough.

After a couple of years I switched to lyrica 300mg TDS (900mg/day) and I found it more helpful and it made me a little less tired.

Both Gabapentin (Neurontin) and Pregabalin (Lyrica) are meds that everyone reacts to differently. Both can cause pretty bad weight gain so you may need to try to cut down calories and increase exercise as much as you feel you can. Always remember that if it doesn't work, you don't have to stick with it. Give the medication at least 6 weeks to get into your system at the final dose you've risen to and then start making a decision.

Gentle hugs

May 01, 2017 4:06 AM

I am currently on 300 mg in afternoon and I take 600 mg at bed... It took me a while to get a build up in my system but I feel it deff has helped prolong my up rightness for a while any way I take 3 muscle relaxers a day lately more like 4 ... But its helped me go from like 15 to 20 or 25 min of what ever cleaning etc then I'm done again... Give it time its seems to me upping my dose helped I know people on a ton so u have room grow..

May 01, 2017 3:28 PM

I take 900 mg a day and like it a lot better than Lyrica

May 01, 2017 7:09 PM

I've been on both Gabapentin and Lyrica. Gabapentin made my teeth very brittle which made for frequent visits to dentist to fix broken teeth. It turned 2 of my teeth grey. Then tried Lyrica which played with my nervous system, weight gain and trouble speaking as brain and mouth weren't in sync. I was getting extreme panic attacks. I have been off it for almost 2 years and still have problems with anxiety and panic. My nerves are more active than before I took those meds and I still have a problem focusing. When pain levels are high it still feels like my brain is vibrating.
For me they aren't good but I know a lot of people it works good for. Wish I was one of them :-(

May 01, 2017 8:41 PM

Been taking gabapentin for almost 5 years. I had experienced the same effects when I started to increase to quickly. The doctors always say to increase 1 every week I never did this. Increased every 3-4 weeks. It helped a lot.

May 01, 2017 9:25 PM

I never felt any help with gabapentin. My wife dose. I was switched to Lyrica. Yea I gained weight. And had to increase dosages and weight but now on 100mg 2x a day and is doing good. I hope you find the right med and dosage and no side effects (or ones you can live with) to help you through your situation.

May 02, 2017 8:48 AM

I agree lyrica has worked better. Now I'm on 300 mg lyrica tring to get off of 1600 mg of gabapentin. They both make u gain weight

May 02, 2017 8:51 AM

That's something I'm having issues with lyrica is speech. I normally talk really fast and I've slowed ALOT b/c I can "find" my words. Today very very dizzy 😵

May 02, 2017 7:36 PM

Drugs have different effects on all of us. I take it for autonomic small fiber neuropathy, an extremely painful condition. I suffer from numerous other medical conditions that cause other
kinds of pain. If I'm off gabelentin for awhile and then resume it, I go through sleep issues for the first or second week. After that, it's ok.

May 03, 2017 3:50 AM

I take gabapentin for nerve pain. It does help, but creates alot of fatigue and I end up sleeping my day away due to the drowsy effects.

May 06, 2017 3:39 AM

I have been taking Lyrica and now my insurance won't cover it so they are switching me to this med. I have heard others say things about weight gain. That scares me because that will add to my depression.

May 06, 2017 8:16 AM

I have also gained weight. But slowly. For taking 3200 mg everyday I thought I'd gain more. But I focus on becoming more functional. Once that happens I can lose some weight I hope.

May 06, 2017 8:34 AM

What I don't understand is if you're having a bad reaction on a low dose why increase mg?
I felt as if someone standing on my shoulders, foggy, lost equilibrium and that was 300mg a day for 3wks! Yeah so lets increase to 900mg per day oh and let's add effexor too!
But that's acceptable over 30mg codiene a day that doesn't have those side effects! 😳🔫

May 06, 2017 9:00 AM

Doesn't make sense does it spunky?!?!?

May 07, 2017 4:57 PM

Although I do have some of the side effects with Neurontin which is Gabapentin I will take it anyday over Lyrica. I had extreme vasodilation passed out and I had what looked like a roadmap all over my legs and arms and upper body that were all my veins you could see a pretty pale anyway but you could see through anyway that was a no-go for me it was pretty bad Neurontin I've taken 1800 add a split over three times a day and that helps a lot with the shooting pain I get from my back but it also seems to dampen some of the worst I'm walking through an electrified mud filled with razors feeling of the fibro

May 07, 2017 6:48 PM

My dr tried me on Gabapentin and after the 2nd dose everyone thought i had had another mini stroke! My words were all slurred and mixed up and i couldn't move properly. They put me in a scanner, said it was not a stroke then put me on a stroke ward for 5 days. They then tried me on Pre-gabalin with same results.
However, our daughter has MS, she was put on Gabapentin and she says they have worked brilliantly for her pain.

May 08, 2017 3:11 AM

I been on gabapentin almost a year it works great for me helped me keep up right longer with less pain ... I still have pain but thats what happens when the worlds a druggies stage show and well if the kitten fell outta tree we alllll have to be junkies looking for a fix.... Infact right now reason im still at muscle relaxer level my doctors other doctor came in saw me once looked at me said " YOUR NOT A CADIDATE FOR PAIN MEDS THAT SHOULD MAKE YOU HAPPY " WTF R U SERIOUS MIGHT BE WAITING BEHIND A DUMPSTER WITH A BAT ... OK WHO IM KIDDING WHEN I CAN BARELY MOVE LOL... BUT GABAPWNRIN HELPED ME A LOT SLEEP BETTER TOO...

May 08, 2017 4:22 AM

Hello! I'm brand new here and this is my first post. I was on 1200 mgs per day and first side effect was extremely blurred vision. Did not provide noticeable pain relief so I tapered down and got off of it after a year or so; too many pills. My doc said dosage must be high for effect thus, my dose of 4 caps x 3 daily. Your dose seems low based on my docs order. Best wishes.

May 10, 2017 12:51 PM

MizzMonroe, forget the bat--get the AK47 out! Bwahahaha! Signed: Nina the evil twin! 😈

May 12, 2017 10:48 PM

Dizziness, sedation and nausea are the most common expected side effects that should go away with slow titration up. Biggest mistake is taking too much at first.

May 13, 2017 2:00 AM

Works on my Fibro pain to help me sleep. I take it at night, as it makes me little drowsy. No other side effects for me. If you start it, do not stop taking it without calling your Dr first. Has terrible withdrawal effects, as most drugs. Good luck!

May 16, 2017 3:34 AM

Gabapentin turned me into a hostile impatient SOB. Had to get well off it befor my child was born. As for the pain benefits...average. now trialing lignocain infusion. Day 4 not sure.

May 16, 2017 10:21 AM

Interesting it made you hostile. Could be my explanation, too. I'll mention to my dr

Jun 02, 2017 9:21 PM

It depends on the type of pain that is the next drug I am trying. I have heard for some people that it is great and others not so much . I get every side effect possible and so does my friend but she said that with gabapentin it's different she doesn't get any side effects which is different from her other meds.

Jun 02, 2017 10:58 PM

Used Neurontin for quite a while and got up to a total daily dose of 1800 mg. Had to wean off. Had no energy and couldn't do anything. Slept all the time.

Jun 03, 2017 10:15 AM

900 mg day, made my migraines almost completely go away but I did gain some weight.

Jun 03, 2017 7:16 PM

It worked really well for managing my pain but after 4 mothes of taking 1200mg/day my stomach is completely trashed and I can't eat dairy without getting rediculously nauseus

Jun 06, 2017 5:47 AM

I've been on both and am currently on 300mg of pregabaline/lyrica BD along with co-dydramol 2 Qds and nortriplaline 25mg nocte. I've found this time round the pregab suits me better at the moment. I really struggled with weight gain from the gabapentine but no so much with pregab. Everyone is different and meds affect everyone differently. Good luck with your meds xx

Jun 06, 2017 11:44 PM

It really helps with my sciatica. It doesn't necessarily help at the point, but it helps it from traveling down my leg. BUT if I miss a day..I can barely walk the next day because every other step I take, it goes down my leg and I almost fall. So I suppose it helps more than I realize.

Jul 13, 2017 3:38 AM

It was pretty good for me... until I had an allergic reaction to it.

If I titrated up fully, I would probably have been rather happy with it.

Drugs work differently for everyone. Every person's bodies have their own quirks, so always remember when reading personal stories that your mileage may vary.

Jul 29, 2017 4:59 PM

I have Fibromyalgia and I take Gabapentin, it's done wonders for me I have terrible body aches and muscle spasms it has aloud me to get some sleep. It's a good one, right from the first dose it worked for me. Good luck to you

Jul 29, 2017 6:10 PM

I personally could not use it, it gave me horrible headaches & dizziness.
It sucks major that you're so young & in so much pain. I understand, wish I could help. Stay strong.

Jul 29, 2017 6:13 PM

I have taken lots of different things to try and ease my pain, none of them have worked but gabapentin made me feel so ill so I had to come of them but everyone is diffrent so they might work for you. 😊

Jul 29, 2017 6:28 PM

Gabapentin has helped my neuropathy in my extremities. I do find it makes me tired so decreased from 3 times a day to 2 saving it till later in the day and bedtime to help me rest.

Jul 29, 2017 7:49 PM

I take gabapentin. It made me real tires and loopy at first but now it's better the longer I take it. I take 600mg 3 times a day. It has helped a lot with nerve pain and spasms.

Jul 29, 2017 7:52 PM

I took it up to about the max dosage. It did nothing for me.

Feb 22, 2018 7:49 AM

My doc just prescribed Gabapentin for my panic disorder. Low dose starting 100 mg at night. Dr. is trying to get me off benzos (2 mg per day for years). I also suffer from low back back pain (si joint issues) and disc bulge. I'm very concerned about weight gain with the Gaba. Been trying to lose weight but it's hard to do w/ back pain. Seems like and endless loop. Pain, no exercise, then weight gain. I'm thinking the Gaba may help pain so I can exercise to lose weight but so many have said you gain weight regardless of food and exercise. Help! Any advice appreciated.

Feb 22, 2018 3:00 PM

Hello. I have fibro and gabapentina works for me. Recently I was afraid of lyrica side effects so
I made a plan to stop so I could make an expirement I went through all the withdrawal. But my pains start to get worst. I started taking again. I got better. No side effects for me. Maybe gives me some sleep, but is good because I'm taking only at night and I sleep better.

Cymbalta I also take.

Wishing you the best!!
I hope you do improve.

Feb 22, 2018 3:52 PM

I also take Zoloft. Just seems like too many meds but whatever lets us get through the day....😉 Thanks for the reply and wish you the best.

Feb 23, 2018 8:12 PM

I had an allergic reaction to gabapentin. It was horrible! One side of my body felt like I was on fire. Half of my face became paralyzed. It was horrendous! I tend to develope allergies. It worked fairly well until it tried to kill me.

Feb 24, 2018 6:33 AM

That IS horrible. I know we are all different but I see online that a lot of people have probs with this med after it builds up.

Apr 05, 2018 9:17 PM

I'm on Gabapentin for something other than pain. I am always exhausted, to the point of being nauseous. Had a sleep study done and apparently I move constantly in my sleep. (Registered 412 limb movements in 478 mins-8 hrs!) But I have to say, the pain I do have has not improved - in fact it seems to be worse. I have moved on to Essential Oils - more natural, less synthetic, man made options.
