Well putting the eye drops in my eye's tonight burned so bad I wanted to let out a Hugh scream it hurt so bad, my question is has anyone had this problem and is it normal? Did you check the expiration date? They will burn like nothing you ever felt before if they are outdated, I've used out dated Visine, that's how I know.

Just bought them

I thought you'd get more answers by now so I didn't comment. But yes! I have had that happen with new drops also (not as bad as screaming, but bad) with three or four brands, including one the pharmacist recommended.

Moparmom, My eyes burn, especially with the Restasis (rx). But the longer I've used them the leads they burn. I have to do the restasis twice a day, as well as using Systane drops twice & Systane Gel at night. I wait 15-30 minutes after the restasis before using the Systane. These are the way my eye doc recommended, and the brand's of OTC. The gel coats my eyes and blues my vision somewhat, so that's why it's at bedtime. I'm actually considering buying an eye mask for dry eyes to help lessens the night dry out. If you keep burning it may warrant a all our visit to your eye doc. I developed inflammation once that needed rx to help. Hugs & prayers it learns soon! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Hello. Visine isn't actually good for our eyes unless it's just an occasional thing. I wonder about sjogrens myself with severe dry eyes. Don't have the really dry mouth just a bit. On restasis and doxycycline 100mg a day for my eyes. Have ankylosing spondylitis and HLA-B27+ arthritis marker. Have had chronic iritis as well as cataracts removed. On Remicade for AS. Hugs

The most effective drops I have are Systane Ultra, which are preservative-free, and Celluvisc which is even thicker (also preservative-free). I use them both every day with Restasis. You can recap them to save for later.

You can get stuff from the eye doc. There's one that's even a gel. I can't remember the name sorry. I haven't found they hurt. Have you been to an opthalmologist?

May 24, 2016 7:23 PM

I've only been to a regular eye doctor and she said to use Visine. This was of course before I found out about the Sjogren's

May 24, 2016 8:51 PM

If you can get to an opthalmologist they know how to treat sjogren eyes. They should be watched by an opthalmologist anyway. Are you on plaquenel as well? If so your eyes should also be monitored by an opthalmologist.

There could be other things going on then just dry eyes with sjogrens and plaquenel if you're on it.

Moparmom,
After your first post, I thought this doesn't sound right.
In Canada we have a toll free poison control line that you can call that can help. For example like to flush the eyes or NOT TO FLUSH the eyes with cold water. Cross contamination can happen if you have something in one eye then rub it and touch the other eye. That could even happen if the eye drop container touches one eye then the other. Trusted Doctor, eye specialist or pharmacist may help.
You are more prone and sensitive to problems because of your illness and perhaps your medications.

I do not want to down play what has happened to you !!!

I have eye problems NYD. Certain lotions on my hands then rubbing my eye can be nasty for me. I once chopped jalapeño peppers without gloves, rubbed my eye, it began to burn like crazy. I flushed with cold water, transferred to the other eye. Oh my gosh then lips, throat, hands were on fire, swelling and itchy+++ I didn't understand what had happened until way later. I thought I was having a major allergic reaction. No, just not that swift that day😝 thank goodness.
Take care of your eyes Moparmom. Hope you can learn more about your problem.
Beets.

Omg, Beets, I did that with an onion one time! But it wasn't as bad as a pepper!! 😡 We live & learn the hard way I guess. πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

My eye doc has me using the Systane drops. I absolutely know about Visine burning, been there. I also use OccuSoft eye scrub patches and Systane thicker night time ointment. Your eye doc can help with maybe samples & his go to recommendations.

Since diagnosis I will see my first specialist June 8th. From there I will see what happens. I have been keeping track of problems and possible issues related to Sjogren's.
