If you use the right hand to rub the left it should ease some. You start with the pad of the left thumb. Take your right thumb and gently press on the base of the lefts pad and seek a tender spot. Now be careful here , some people can make themselves throw up if they get too aggressive. Slowly work up the thumb. Usually the area between the joints on the acual thumb is where you will find the tender spot. When you find that spot, gently rub it in a circle. The best way to do it is to rest the left thumb on the rights fingers and use the rights thumb to rub. Don't be aggressive. Just do it for about 5 circles and let it rest, then take calm breaths, then do again. The exact tender spot on people is different, mine is just above the V in the hand. Sometimes mine is more on the outside of the thumb. If the gentle circle rub helps but not enough then and only then do you just press and hold for 5 seconds (my time). I have best results if I imagine being in my thumb and seeing the headache .
