Has Anyone Tried PRIALT for Pain Control?

Nov 08, 2014 12:30 AM

I have been in contact with someone who had a pump installed under his skin that provides a drip into his epidural sac. The drips contain Prialt which is a synthetic snail venom. Its derived from the Cone Snail which is a sea creature that makes its own toxins to poison its prey. There are over 100 toxins in its venom which apparently when combined are 100 times more powerful than typical pain medications and is great at reducing pain in humans.

However, before everyone thinks here's the magic potion, apparently Prialt has some significant side effects on a relatively high percentage of humans. The guy I was in touch with, received the synthetic venom for over 2 years and during that time he suffered hallucinations, delusions and heard voices. The mental impacts were serious.

But he did have excellent results in pain reduction, which he needed. He had an accident that left him suffering with pain levels of 9/10 without pain medications. At first the opiates controlled his pain down to 4/10 but then over time the opiates didn't work as well and the pain slowly over a few years was up to 7/10. He then had the pump installed the the pain levels were reduced to 2/10. And even on his worse day it only rose as high as 4/10.

Those are great results but the side effects were too much and he had to stop with the drip infusion and is now back up to agonizing pain levels.

Has anyone ever tried this drug and what were the benefits and problems experienced?

I find it unusual that no one else has even tried this medication. It works so well at killing pain so I was hoping that there may be some people out there who use it and don't have the significant side effects.

I'll see my pain management doctor next week. I'll make sure to mention it!

I've spoken to many who have had a pump implanted and my pm doc uses morphine mostly. I will have to ask him when I see him next week.
