having to stop pain meds before surgery

Sep 25, 2015 6:49 PM

Has anyone ever had to stop taking your pain meds in order to prep for surgery. Doctor says she needs them out of my system so I don't have an interaction with anthesethia ..its been three days now and its all coming back. Numbness stabby pains...etc....

Yes, most good surgeons will ask you to stop them due to bleeding and keeping you under.

Especially since my last surgery. I had a problem with waking up early..I was sure it was a good reason.. It's just a challenge dealing with the sudden onset of the pain again.

Any ideas on how to get through this..they have allowede to keep my tramadol until the day before. So at least I have something.

Use rubs, creams hot packs

Thank u weezie12... I will.. And even though I know its not helpful..I seem to be. Eating more now..I suppose its comfort or stress eating..

Yes, had that problem with last surgery. 7 days of no anti-inflammatories(bleeding risk). That was fun(not). Which only left me with ES Tylenol or Tylenol tension headache. I also second the hot packs, creams, rubs. No aspercreme though. It has a form of aspirin in it.

Hi hang in there. I don't know your situation but I was told to stay on my meds b4 spine Surgery or any orthopaeddic surgery . It depends on your doctor I guess. No reason to suffer b4 surgery . However , even with meds there is still pain. Good luck .

Rinoguy..I agree..my last surgery I was allowed to stay on my tramadol but they had a problem putting out and I also woke up to soon with that surgery.. Although I'm no longer with that doctor due to some other issues I had with him..but I can only assume they want to ensure they can control things this time... Right now I'm still on tramadol but I've stopped my loratab ..and I have to discontinue tramadol two day before.. So I'll try and just get through this period... But it is hard..

My docs said being on pain meds makes it harder to reduce the pain from surgery. And the anesthesia issue is tricky for me, as I've had a hard time responding when I awoke. Good luck on your surgery. You're in my prayers. 🙏🌼

I've had 5 surgeries and have never had to stop my meds before...I did make sure my anesthesiologist knew my pain med dose. I've never woken up or had a hard time waking up afterwards. I can't imagine you having to go cold turkey. :/

Going cold turkey off any medication taken regularly is very uncomfortable. I'm so sorry you Are having to go through this. I hope your surgery goes well with no anesthesia issues. Blessings ✌️❤️

That's a complete and utter nightmare!!! I have had 28 surgeries and I am on huge amounts of opioids and am overweight as well. They had the list of my meds, I had pre-op testing and never, ever had any trouble with anesthesia and never had any doctor tell me that they had a hard time waking me up. I hope they can make you comfortable while you come off and that your surgery goes off without a hitch. I hope you heal quickly and completely and that they are able to keep the pain at bay while you heal. Hang in there, you're in my prayers. {{{{Hugs}}}}🙏🏻

Hi everyone.... Thanks for your support and prayer. My surgery did go well. The surgeon was able to remove 8 of the ten tumors. The largest was 11 lbs and went down to 6 lbs. She was not able to safely get the last two. So I'll have to start a type of hormone therapy. I think that's what she said. She is attempting to preserve my fertility since I'm still pretty young. So far two week post op and doing well .
