Increased hunger during flare or high pain

Jan 09, 2016 1:28 PM

Has anyone ever noticed or experience this. When I first started this pain journey I had issues with not eating and still have trouble with not eating enough through the day. Even though I am technically overweight. My doctors don't seem to be concerned since metabolically I test out fine totally normal.
But this lasst three weeks I've been starving especially when I'm in pain. I could eat s fgully balanced meal. And either don't feel full at all or in like 30 min. I'm hungry again. Does anyone know bout this? I e tried googling it but I get nothing that makes sense to me. When I get the hunger feelings I normally just get a drink or try to ignore it. But if I do that to long I'll go into a hypoglycemia episode.
Basically I just want to know why I'm so hungry now?

I find food disgusting most of the time I'm in pain higher than a 7. It's hard for me to even eat 3 meals a day so I chug an ensure (protein drink) instead. I'll even get low blood sugar from only drinking water. Good luck figuring it out! It does sound kind of odd, hopefully someone else on here can relate! I hope you have a good day with less pain 😃

Thanks Meagan.. Most times I eat crackers or dry cereal. But I stil just find it odd. At first I thought it was a comfort thing. But I don't think it's that. I just don't know. And I'm hoping you have a low pain day too

I go thru spurts. Most days I don't eat much of anything at all. Then there are other days where I can't get enough to eat. When I'm in a flare is when I eat the least.

Newfibrogirl I'm the same way!!! Sometimes the pain is so bad that it makes me nauseous, but usually I go into a flare and suddenly I'm hurting and starving. Do you find yourself with cravings? Cuz I occasionally want specific things like chocolate ice cream or cheeseburger, but even if I get full like 30 minutes later I'm trolling for food again....

Yes..my craving r like onions.( don't judge me) lol cheese toast or tomato sauce..and sometime I combine them all . and I'll out noodles with it. Most inkeeo roman noodles and pastsa sauce on hand

I'll do this thing where I make egg noodles and then I cook canned tomatoes with garlic powder and drain the water and then put the tomatoes and sauce on the noodles and DUMP Parmesan cheese on it and stir it all up and will eat the whole panful. Omg I'm such a pig lol

When we are in pain, our bodies dump all kinds of chemicals into our systems. From what you say you are eating, it sounds like you are needing certain minerals that are in tomatoes and the fat in cheese. Carbs are a large part of what you are craving also. During the times when you are not eating, try taking a multi vitamin and mineral supplements. See if that makes a difference. Hugs and thanks for all the help with the prayer chain.

Craving for onions means your body/ liver is needing it to help detox, has something to do with sulfur, etc. It's okay eat those onions, they are loaded with nutrients that your body needs!! Try increasing your protein in your meals, lowering the carbs...also don't forget that add alittle fat to it...might help sustain you!!! Much love, Terri

Carbs are what i crave when its really bad. I try to eat fruit but usually end up caving and having pasta or bread. I never ever ignore it unless im at work and have run out of food. Feeling hungry usually means your body is needing something, the hard part is finding what that is. I try to always have a protein with my carb since protein takes longer to digest so you stay full longer (usually). Stay away from junk, i never purchase it so it cant be my go to.

All great advice and tips and Terri I really thought I was going nuts when I found myself eating raw onions... Lol I've already been eatt raw bell pepper.. Lol.I'm really tr to get a nice mist together for when I go shopping next week. Right its getting low in cabinet.. But I want to have the best choices possible. And I eat small bites so I'm trying to find a bit sized protien. But thanks for your advice and please keep it coming if u thinknof anything else.

Try using Chromium Picolinate to curb cravings. My psych doc told me about it, and I've been taking it for 3-4 months. I'm actually not craving snacks or sweets as much as I was. 😷🙏🌼

It's weird for me, I either am really hungry or absolutely cant eat anything but saltines. Im not sure why.

Jan 09, 2016 10:58 PM

I'm the opposite. I've haven't lost interest in cooking, I just rarely do it anymore because of pain. My food intake has suffered due to increased pain.. It just hurts too much to stand for too long to cook a meal. I basically just snack on whatever is close or just say forget it, it's too much and I just don't eat. As far as the family goes..... What used to be home cook meals from scratch, is now quick cooked meals.. And they cook it themselves.

I seem to experience the same thimg.I am over weight which started about 9 months ago. My weight was at 115 and I am 5' 2" which I felt was healthy. I was then diagnosed with hypothyroidism and as soon as I started taking sythyroid the weight came on over night. I have had every test known to try and find out the 100 pound weight gain in a 3 month period. The extra weight seems toto.cause more pain and flares are more frequent and last longer. During this time I feel like.ilike.i am staved I don't know if I am using more energy while my body is fighting off the pain. I just which my body to giveeveryone a break so I could have some what of a normal life I feel like I spend more time in bed in terrible pain then I do out doing little.tlittle.thimgs to kkeep.from having pain

Thank you guys. I was taking a multivitamin a while back but stopped since all my numbers came back normal .
Which I should have know was off since due to gastric bypass I'm supposed to have deficiency of some sort. So I'm gonna try the vitaimn gain . it's all so frustrating I eat healthier then anyone in my house yet I'm the biggest.. Ha..my mom even got mad fussing about how many salads I eat..i looked at her and was like ..lol what I wrong with u? U fussing biut veggies...lol

Mimi1967, I was dx with hypothyroidism last year and I'm taking levothyroxine & liothyronine. I've also gained weight; 5'3" & 192 lb... Not a good thing for my already hurting joints & spine. I eat healthier than any of my siblings but I'm bigger than all of them. To give me comfort I keep telling myself it's hereditary (remembering a picture of my great grandmother who was twice my size at 65) Lol 😉! Unfortunately for us the pharmaceuticals haven't figured out a way to make the meds without making us fat. Or maybe they want us fat, so we keep needing more meds as other things go wrong? Hmmm? 😷🙏🌼

Jan 10, 2016 6:07 PM

Flappys I'm with u on that. I would der sometimes if they want us to have other heal issues sonwe will need more meds. I mean. If they can grow an ear in a rat's back how the heck can they not make a fat free pain pill.. I'm just saying.. Ughhhh.😕😐
