Insomnia, Fatigue/Pain & X-Painful Scapula to Breast

Apr 25, 2015 2:39 AM

This is the second night this week, and 3rd in 10 days that I've woke up (between 2-4am) and couldn't go back to sleep. I'm already fighting a sudden overwhelming fatigue that started Thursday evening, followed by all over muscle cramps & joint pains.

I was laying on my left side and noticed a discomfort so tried to readjust my position by turning over. Then I noticed discomfort up under the armpit, like I was holding an object there. I lifted the arm over my head (like doing a breast exam) & reached with the right to examine the area. I felt tenderness in the lymph nodes but as I traced backwards & down, towards the scapula, I hit an area so painful I nearly came off the bed. There's an extremely painful lump (almost rope like) & flat area at the bottom of the scapula/ribs. And tracing it back up and forward, towards the underarm & breast, the pain & swelling lessens.

Out of curiosity I checked the right scapula/ribs, underarm & breast, and only the scapula & ribs are slightly painful. It doesn't go all the way to the breast. Both sides of my ribs are sensitive but not painful, and not in back or front. If I put my arms by my side it feels like something is up inside the armpit, and its uncomfortable. This is either the 2-3 time this has been like this in the underarm/side-breast area. But I'd not noticed all the other towards the back before.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? πŸ™πŸŒΌ

I'm sorry you are fighting insomnia. I woke up at 4 and haven't been able to go back to sleep though I'm tired and dizzy still.
Sounds like possibly a swollen or infected or clogged lymph node to me. I would try some heat and massage starting with it as gentle as possible so you can handle it.

Apr 25, 2015 4:04 AM

You're probably right. I'll try that. But I thought lymph glands were more egg shaped, only smaller. Whatever it is hurts. Thanks! And I'm sorry you're having insomnia too. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

FlappysLady, I agree with Aliya. Sounds like a lymph node that's causing that. Sorry about the insomnia. Completely understand. Been up since 5:30 dealing with l ankle, back pain and the pain of an abscess again on the left side, right where my bra line is. This is exciting already(not). Hoping a hot bath might help.

Amanda, I know about MRSA and how serious it is and can be. But I don't understand how it pops up here and there, unless its traveling via blood or lymph systems. If that's so, have they ever given you IV antibiotics?

Years ago my husband got a staph infection in his cut hand when the rubber glove he was wearing caught and tore. I made him go to the ER one day because he started having red streaks going up his arm. They were going to hospitalize him, but I begged them not to because we were set to start vacation the next day, a week at the beach with our two small kids. Needless to say that got nixed then & there! They agreed to not hospitalize him but he had to report to the ER at 7am & 7pm every day for 7 days. They place a picc line in his arm and wrapped clean cotton gauze over it each time, following IV antibiotics they gave him They said if he failed to show up they'd send the Sherriff to pick him up. We couldn't even go out in public because of the risk for him to get an even worse infection, and risk to others picking up his infection. Maybe IV antibiotics would be a better option for you since it doesn't seem to want to clear up without spreading? πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Amanda I know you probably don't want to here it but I agree with Flappsy. Iv's are the best way for you to go. It sounds like you have MRSA in your blood. When I was in my late 30's my daughter started having boils pop up on her, I didn't think about washing out our bathtub with bleach everytime I bathed her. So my husband and I caught them from her, I had at one time 20 across my lower stomach at one time ugh it was soo painful my kept giving me the same antibiotics to take they would clear up then I would have another break out.I had on e last break out on one of my breastfeeding it was hard as a rock and red,I had a fever of 105, the had never seen anything that looked like it. The next morning it was black after using a moist heating pad allnight. They called a surgeon and he did a ID put packing in it to drain the the whole was about 3 in deep it was nasty it took from October until February to heal all the while I was taking Bactrim . Come to find out I had a Staff infection in my blood. It's nothing to mess with. Will keep you in my prayers.

I don't know why it put breastfeeding in there it is supposed to just be breast.

Weezie, ummm they told me I'm a carrier So I'm assuming that means it's in my blood. They have tried almost every oral antibiotic they can give me, but because of allergies, options are limited. The next step is doing long-term suppressive therapy with antibiotics to see if that helps any. We are down to the big gun meds now, such as Vancomycin and Zyvox. it's even resistant to Clindamycin which is really not good. Going to surgeon on Tuesday, except if it spreads up anymore, I'll go to the ER.
I really don't trust anyone else, especially the little urgent care clinics in town to take care of it. They already earned me one OR trip this year. I'm not going to have them earn me another one.

Apr 25, 2015 3:38 PM

Amanda, that's doesn't make sense, them telling you you're a carrier. When I caught mono at 18 I found out from the guy I was dating that another girl he'd been seeing (cheater) also had mono. He laughed about it... And I wanted to kick him! Anyway, I told the doctor and he said the guy likely gave it to us both. I told him the guy said he'd never been sick, and the doc said it was most likely he was a carrier. When I asked the meaning of that the doc explained, "a carrier is someone who has a disease/germs laying dormant in them. They never get sick from it, but they pass it to others who do get sick.". If that's the truth then what they told you doesn't make sense. If anyone knows different please help me understand. And I sure hope & pray they'll find the right meds to stop your infection in it's track! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 25, 2015 3:40 PM

It doesn't make a whole bunch of sense to me either but that's what they told me.

Apr 25, 2015 7:31 PM

Flappyslady have you had any relief or is it getting worse?

Apr 25, 2015 8:45 PM

Not really. I'm still very drained. I didn't even take a shower today. Of course our stormy weather didn't cooperate either, but thankful everyone here is safe. My husband pressed around my back and its almost like it's the side ribcage Ares going up to the axillary area & side-breasts. I'm wondering if its actually connected to the Sjogrens or Fibromyalgia, or both. I know my mouth, nose, eyes & throat has been so dry its made it hard to swallow pills and meats. Now I know the cause of the year-long swallowing issues! My husband is so understanding, refilling my glass and cooking all day. I'm so tired I'm about to go to bed. I just hope I can sleep tonight. Praying we all sleep tonight! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

MY middle daughter had a bad case of mono get ahold of her in high school, she carries it still but is such a health food guru and fitness trainer she doesn't have it flare up. I ended up with mono and strep 5 years ago during her wedding and prep. The wedding and reception weren't going to wait for me so I pushed through thinking I was just over stressed with everything, went to the doc as soon as it was over and found out why I felt so crappy! She took elderberry elixir to build her system.

Apr 26, 2015 2:20 PM

Oregonhomested I didn't know mono could flare up?!πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 26, 2015 2:25 PM

FlappysLady, yes it can. The virus can lay dormant in your system for years. Similar to the shingles virus.

Apr 26, 2015 3:33 PM

Flappsy, I am sorry to put a damper on your day but if you felt something that tender and it was "rope like" you could have a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). They look and feel lumpy and are usually long and resemble rope under the skin if they are close enough to the top of the skin to see. I wouldn't take any chances and I would go to a nearby walk-in clinic and have them check it for you. If you don't want to do that, I would call the doctor tomorrow and find out when he/she can get you in to have it examined. I hope that you don't have one but on the good side, My Best Friend's Daughter had one on her side, from under her armpit downward and then it sort of turned back. It was so painful, she couldn't wear a bra for weeks. Fortunately, the thing healed with medication and Taking care of it every day according to the doctor's instructions. I hope that you are able to clear it up fast and that the tenderness in a the area also goes away. Hope aside from that, you've had a peaceful and less pain day

Apr 26, 2015 9:52 PM

Amanda I'll have to all my doctor to check my blood work. Thanks!

AlwayZ, rest at ease, I'm pretty sure it's not a DVT because it's on both sides today, and the left hurts less than it did yesterday, and more than the right side. I'm actually thinking if it might be Costochondritis? I've never had it anywhere but the front breatstplate area before. But it's almost a mirror image of pain today, uncomfortable & noticeable but tolerable to a degree. And also today, the areas to the right and left of my L4-S2 is just as painful if I press them. Maybe it's some type of new arthritis pain areas. With my constant weird things who knows! Lol. In light of the dizziness it's not a problem, or the least of my worries. I'll see if the pain specialist can check it for me tomorrow. Goodnight all!🌼😴

Apr 27, 2015 11:23 AM

Flappsy, I am glad that it's not a DVT. I got worried when you described it and didn't want anything bad to happen to you. (Like what's going on already isn't bad enough). I understand the pain you are having, I was diagnosed with Costochondritis within the last couple of months. I was worried that something was wrong with my heart so I had a workup done and turns out that all was fine but there was tremendous inflammation showing in my blood work and there was alot of inflammation around my sternum and my ribcage hurts. I also get pain from T-7 so badly that it comes straight through to my chest when it's really bad. I know exactly what you mean by all the weird things that happen with us... It's almost laughable sometimes and yet it's frightening at the same time. I sometimes wonder when I go to the doctor, what is he going to tell me now??? Hope you had a good night's sleep last night and that you have an even better day today.

Apr 27, 2015 11:54 AM

I read something once about waking between 2 and 4 that had something to do with adrenal glands and cortisol. I also wake between those times. It sounds like you really need to go to the doctor I have had really bad swollen lymph nodes and they put me on prednisone to help cure it.

Apr 27, 2015 1:20 PM

Well I did sleep well, until I woke at 2:30am, then it was tossing and turning and barely dozing until 7am. I had to get up for an appointment. I am so tired today.

Apr 27, 2015 9:40 PM

While viewing the slideshow on Esperanza's "fibromyalgia" convo, it mentioned side-ribcage pain as a symptom. That makes perfect sense with the flare up in my lumbar area, hip to hip, down into my buttocks & thighs. Its all painful to touch in the muscles. I didn't put it together with my underarm ribs areas until I saw the slideshow. So I'm pretty sure I'm having a fibro flare as well as the Sjogrens flare. My mouth is getting so dry trying to talk that my lips/gums are sticking to my teeth...and it sounds like I'm slurring my words! My lower lip actually split when I went to speak because of the dryness. I've got to find a way to keep my mouth moist! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 27, 2015 9:44 PM

Have you tried biotene? They make a toothpaste, mouthwash and a spray gel. All designed for dry mouth. Can be found at drug stores or wal-mart type stores. Don't know how well they work, but worth a try.

Apr 28, 2015 10:18 AM

Yes I have the blend now. But apparently I'm in a flare because this is the worst my mouth has ever been. I'm going to pick up some Rx today so I will look for the toothpaste & spray. I didnt know about those. I'm concerned about candy getting between my teeth and TMJ splint, causing cavities, or I would keep candy in my mouth constantly. another problem I've had for at least ten years is my throat gets extremely dry at night, either causing me to cough or get strangled trying to swallow or talk.
