Knee pain troubles

Jun 14, 2016 2:23 AM

Before I begin I want to list all my conditions.
Neurofibromatosis type one
Hypothyroidism
Secondary adrenal insufficiency
Scoliosis
Hip dysplasia
Chronic pain
Amenorrhea
Depression
I may have severe microcytic hypochromic anemia with increased RDW and reactive thrombocytosis consistent with iron deficiency anemia.
I recently had a life threatening event and I required an overnight hospital stay during which I received a blood transfusion, I received four units of blood, my hemoglobin beforehand was 2.9 and that's critical after the transfusion it was 7 which is still low but much better. The story about this transfusion is too long and I've talked about it a lot and I don't feel it applies to this post so I won't be telling it. However if anyone's interested in knowing the whole story let me know and I'll find a way to get it to you.
Anyway for quiet a while now my right knee has been bothering me, I sit criss cross but I get up a lot or stretch so I don't leave it bent for long periods of time. Most of the time it doesn't hurt though when I'm sitting up in bed, but every time I am laying on my right side with my legs bent my right knee will start to hurt quite badly, the pain is excruciating it reaches 9 1/2 sometimes 10 on the pain scale, I have a high pain tolerance so my 10 is different from your 10. I'm on a daily regimen of strong pain medication I take 300mg of Gabapentin twice daily at 10pm and 11pm (I take my doses close together and my doctors know my schedule and are okay with it)and 50mg of Tramadol once a day at 11pm and 50mg of methadone once a day 30mg at 11pm and 20mg at 4am. I have 5mg of Oxycodone for breakthrough pain(I can take up to 15 as the doctor said but I've had to increase it to 25mg three times for severe shoulder pain. I don't take it unless I absolutely have to but I haven't taken it for my knee I've only taken it for my left shoulder which has also been hurting.) I try to get my mind off the pain before I take any medicine. I sleep during the day from 10am to 10pm I sleep sitting up most of the day and I change positions around 7pm I get on my right side and both knees are bent and every day only my right knee will hurt, I stretch it out for a few minutes and I will try to not bend it completely and that seems to help and the pain lessens and I'm able to go to sleep but I eventually end up bending it completely and when I get up for the night I have horrible pain. I dislocated my right knee in 2008 so I don't know if the pain is because of arthritis or from the injury. I tried my TENS unit but it didn't help. If anyone has any ideas on why this pain is happening and any suggestions on how to help relieve the pain please PLEASE let me know. Thank you.

Delilah, have you had recent x-rays of the knees? I'm wondering if you have some arthritis started, or chondromalacia of the patella (wearing out of the kneecap). I have both plus bursitis, but my OA is starting to attack all my joints now. I have to put a pillow between my knees when lying on my side. And I can no longer cross my legs, or sit with my legs folded under me. I also have fibromyalgia tender spots on the insides of the knees. I have a bad left shoulder that has all the same problems. Shifting positions at night doesn't make for restful night. I wish I had some other suggestions. I can't take most pain meds due to allergies. I have gabapentin, tramadol & voltaren gel. Hugs & prayers you find out what's going on & can get better relief & control of the pain! 🙂💕🙏🌼

FlappysLady81 I haven't had any recent X-rays of my knees but I'm going to bring up my knee pain at my follow up with my primary care physician and ask if we can get some X-rays done I'm also going to bring up chondromalacia as well. I have been thinking about what could be causing my pain and arthritis is one of the culprits that's crossed my mind, I've talked to my mom who has arthritis in her knee and she suggested the possibility of fluid buildup in my knee and that maybe it needs to be drained. thank you for your help Flappyslady81. I've been taking Tramadol every 12 hours for my left shoulder which has been causing me pain too. And you're right about changing positions not making for a restful night(for me daytime is nighttime and nighttime is daytime I'm up all night and sleep all day from 10am to 10pm. My mom talked to my pain management specialist today and he's giving me morphine and a prescription for a TENS unit. He also wants me to take my Tramadol every 12 hours. I'm hoping this will bring me relief but I definitely plan on taking care of my knee issue. Hugs and prayers to you as well. Thanks again for your help, seriously you really did help me.

I sprained my already bad knee yesterday but I'm managing. I had 2 vials of fluid drained off about a decade ago. It felt much better after. Hugs & prayers you get relief soon! 🙂💕🙏🌼
