Lip biopsy...ouch! 😡

Apr 17, 2015 12:34 PM

So my rheumatologist wanted me to have a lip biopsy, to see if we can pinpoint the cause(s) of: 1) the oral rash inside my cheeks & 2) the dryness. Went to the ENT this morn. They put the little stick with numbing substance between my teeth and gums and left the room. I woke up when the doc came in. 😴They made a joke about the numbing med knocking me out. Lol He gave me a shot of novacaine... No problem. The second injection I definitely felt! 😰 I said something about it wasn't numb and the doc said, "that was your job, you had the stick." 😳 I quickly said, "yeah but I fell asleep on the job!" 😁 We all laughed at that. 20-30 minutes later he'd done 3 punch biopsies and stitches, and I headed home. That was almost 2 hours ago. Boy, oh boy, can I feel it all now! So very glad I have some oral rinse numbing solution! It feels like I had my wisdom teeth removed, throbbing in my jaw teeth and the TMJ joint! 😩 Glad that's over. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Flappsy I am so sorry that you had to go through that. It seems like it was very painful. I hope that it is a one time procedure that you have to go through. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Ouch! I am so sorry that you are dealing with extra pain. Sending good vibes your way. I hope you heal quickly. Most of all I hope you finally get answers to solve the problem.

I'm not sure I'll get much sleep. The lidocaine solution isn't working but an hour at best. It feels like a real bad tooth ache, but the whole section of back teeth all at once. Its throbbing up into my jaw joint and radiating into the ear canal. They didn't give me any instructions for cleansing or pain control or diet. I've already figured I'll be on a liquid diet until its better. My daughter suggested an ice pack, forgetting I can tolerate ice. She told me its like having a lip piercing with one of those barbell things. I told her anyone who volunteers for that kind of pain needs a psych eval. I hope its a one time thing too Weezie! Thanks to you & LMB!

It got to throbbing so bad I finally gave in and got the freezer rice pack and sat 10 min, waited 10 & iced 10 again. Better results of relief but now I need a blanket! Lol 😨

OMG, Flappsy.... What a nightmare. Sounds like when they had to remove the bone spurs in my jaw and they numbed me up, cut the gum from back and all the way around to the other side to the back and rolled it off my jaw. Then he took a radial saw, cut a notch in the bone and then took a wedge and hammer and chiseled out the pieces of bone. It took him two and a half hours to do both sides and that afternoon it was a nightmare. I hope your meds and the numbing rinse help you get some relief. Try not to bend over as the pressure, as you know will increase and cause more throbbing. Put some cool compresses on your cheek and rest. I hope you feel better. I don't know about the rash, but I suffer from dry mouth from all the meds I take. I hope that they get to the bottom of it. You have really been through the ringer lately and you need a much deserved break... You're in my prayers as always.

Its all pretty good today. I'm even eating regular foods, just not chewing on that side. The jaw and lips are swollen some still & there are 2 small knots on the inside where the stitches are. I'm gargling with salt water though because the inside cheek looks... Ewwww! πŸ˜‰

Apr 19, 2015 6:39 PM

Oh Flappsy I wish that there was something I could do to help you thru this as Alwayz said you have been thru the ringer lately. Your due some good coming your way soon.

Apr 19, 2015 6:41 PM

Alwayz that sounded like you went through some horrible things too. It makes me feel like a wimp compared what y'all have and are living thru at this time. Will be praying for both of y'all.

Apr 19, 2015 6:51 PM

Its ok Weezie. I think in the end its all going to be a good thing. I'll get answers that let my doctors know how to treat me. And I have no pain today, just a swollen jaw. Knowing i have all of you as my support team, it helps me get through it. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Weezie, Never, ever feel like a wimp... Pain is pain!!! If you are hurting and it is enough to cause you not to be able to function, then it is what it is. Everyone has different coping skills and thresholds for pain. I have very little tolerance left from being in pain for so long but at the same time, you get used to it as there is not really any alternative. I have had 28 surgical procedures in the last 18 years between cutting bones, spinal surgeries, implants in my spine that broke, laminectomies, laminotomies, discectomies, etc.. I need to have another surgery on my cervical spine but after all the others and the infections (Last surgery I got MRSA and had 104.6 fever, the incision had to be opened and for 9 months I had a huge hole in my abdomen that ate it's way all the way down to my pelvic bone which is pretty deep considering my size. The doctor took almost 3 hours just to remove the necrotic tissue and then the plastic surgeon took another 2-1/2 to 3 hours to put me back together only to get another infection and have yet another surgery 4 months later. We all have our nightmares... We all have our crosses to bear.. we are all here for one another and that is all that really matters in the end. You are in my prayers

My lip and cheek is almost healed. But I got up yesterday and barely had any voice. I kept feeling tiny bumps on my inner lips. By bedtime they became white...I'm talking tiny, like a needle head. I swished my mouth with some Carafate liquid several times before bed. Today they're almost all gone and my voice is back. That's the 2nd time the tiny bumps have appeared. It sure isn't helping with having the dryness from Sjogrens. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 23, 2015 4:51 PM

Well the test results are in and it's official... I have Sjogrens & I do not have yeast infection in my mouth. They've been treating me for thrush for over 6 years. Shows just what visual diagnosis gets us as patients! It also shows how little doctors really know or understand. I was told by the rheumatologist not to worry because Sjogrens is mostly dryness (eyes, mouth, etc). Well I've got that to the extreme! Now the ENT who did the biopsy said to get back with my rheumatologist for the right treatment, "because Sjogrens can cause major organ issues & damage." Say what?! Thanks... πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 24, 2015 10:55 AM

You know, Flappsy, you really have been through the mill lately... I am sorry you got yet another diagnosis, albeit, the correct one. I hope that they can find a treatment that takes away any symptoms that would cause you any more distress than you already suffer. As always, you're in my prayers. Sending you healing vibes and positive healing wishes.

Apr 24, 2015 8:39 PM

AlwayZ, I'm just glad to know what's been causing all this rash inside my mouth. My husbands been teasing, saying I got "cooties!" Lol.

However I was surprised when I looked into Sjogrens that the other symptoms I've been having, like fatigue, muscle & joint pain, just as well could be from Sjogrens as Fibromyalgia. Because the doctors (3) never mentioned anything but dryness of eyes & mouth I hadn't looked up much. Now I'm not sure which flare I'm in. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Apr 26, 2015 4:39 PM

I hear that loud and clear!!! At least now you got an accurate answer and aren't running around thinking that you've had thrush mouth for the last 4 years. All the best to you and as always, you're in my prayers.

Apr 30, 2015 10:55 AM

The biopsy site has nearly healed no more pain at all. Wish I could say that about the tiny pinprick blistery bumps I got about 7 PM last night. They were on the inside of the upper and lower lips, just like they occurred a few weeks ago. I have no idea what they are or if they're connected to the sjogrens. But they burn and sting like crap! I gargled with bitterness mixed with a numbing oral rinse just to not feel it. This morn they are dried up and scaly again, like last time. They've occurred twice and both times gone away in 24 hours. Weird!

Apr 30, 2015 11:04 AM

I am sorry that you ended up getting those bumps again. When you have sores in your mouth it's a nightmare.. You don't want to eat or drink, the thought of puting anything in your mouth makes you cringe. I get alot of canker sores because I have full dentures and i get sores under them and I know that the pain and burning is horrible. It is really weird though how they clear up in 24 hours but they come back. It sounds to me like something systemic but I've never seen that before. I hope you get it resolved. The last thing you need is a painful mouth along with all the other pain you already suffer.

Apr 30, 2015 11:10 AM

I think anything in the mouth that gets hurt is painful. A least for me. Canker sores hurt me so bad. So I feel so bad for you.. It must really hurt so bad. I guess that means nothing with mustard and vinegar it it πŸ˜€. I shouldn't try to be funny at your pain but I do hope you get better soon. They say things in the mouth heal faster than anywhere else. I hope that is true for you.

Apr 30, 2015 3:04 PM

Laughter is good! Last night even water hurt until I used the lidocaine rinse. I've had a fever blister three times in my life and they were much bigger than the little blisters, and less painful.

May 02, 2015 10:57 PM

Well, that is a great attitude, Flappsy.. We DO have to have humor and laugh or we would go out of our ever loving minds faster than I think would ever be possible.. I'm sorry that you are having such pain in your mouth and that those blisters are so very bad. It really is times like these that I wish I had that magic want and could wave it and make everyone's pain and disease just disappear and we would all live happily ever after. THEN, we could throw that huge party and have a blast. Sleep tight all, I hope and pray that tomorrow brings a better day for you all.

May 03, 2015 9:16 AM

Thanks AlwayZ. I slept OK. The little bumps are back and this morning there's several on my tongue. It reminded me of the bumps they use to call "lie bumps" when I was a kid, but it was a virus... Only you never got more than a couple. I have many! 😞
