Omg I hear you. I do a ton of self massage on, around, and even inside my mouth! I've been tempted to slap my TENS unit on there sometimes.
I sing with a community chorale, and yeah, it can ve bad. Lots of massage then! And I'm still trying to find a pediatric dentist that will see an adult.
Do you get the tinnitus as well? That lovely sudden gong, squeal, hiss that truly IS all in our heads!
I found a good place to massage is the jaw right below the ear, sort of the back of the jawbone. Finger on each side and gently pull forward. Then try inside the mouth, a finger flat on each side of the teeth on the lower jaw. Press down with fingers while trying to press up with the jaw. This resistance can relieve the muscle tension for a bit.
Doctors told me they could help the tmj, but they would have to shatter and completely rebuild my jaw because it's so crooked. Umm, no thanks, I'll just deal with it!!

I completely agree. I had a terrible flare up of it a couple weeks ago. My entire face hurt and I couldn't think because of the pain. I have arthritis that has spread to my jaw. Getting a tmj diagnosis from a new dentist was the best thing because it explained the chronic tinnitus that my GP had no explanation for.

This is a new Symptom for me . and I think I am having some tendonitis or something in my hand right above the thumb joint. It's hard for me to determine which pain is fibromayalgia pain and which is something else. But he's the tmj is horrid. It's like a nail is drilled in my ear an behind my eyes. My eye swells and my entire head and neck is in agony. My tramadol only takes the edge off. I made stir fry today and had suker sofr veggies and eating that made my teeth hurt. I'm like dang. I almost want to just go on a liquid diet to jsy help the pain. It's no fun to eat if it gonna be painful..

I don't know if it'll help for you but what I found helped a llittle bit with reducing the neck pain from it is rolling a towel and fitting it around my neck onthe tmj affected side, and just laying down for half an hour with that, and avoiding my beloved pillows.

It reduced the stress on my neck, which then reduced the stress on my jaw.

I also gave in and used the marijuana (some indica strain) my housemate offered. It didn'tso much reduce the pain as relax me to the point that I was able tofinally get some sleep.

I am so sorry you are going thru this! I have a question for you. How did you know it was TMJ? Did it start somewhere & spread? Or did it just happen all at once ad you couldn't open your mouth? I think I might be getting it! My bottom jaw has moved forward & i can't close my mouth all the way, with out horrible pain in my ear! Ouch!

Well..I've not gotten an official diagnosis but my mom and uncles say they have it. Mom never had it this bad but my uncle did. I have read up on it and it is possible to have lock jaw where you jaw is in the open position. Mine is in the closed position. I can move the jaw to a certain point but not without pain. It did happen all at once for me. Or I think it did.I have been having pain in my ears for the last week and horrible headaches. I was out running errands and when I got home and was eating dinner which was just a sandwich. I went to take a bite and was nkt able to. And the pain was awful at least 10 . it was so bad I had to switch from my sandwich to soup for dinner and chewing was like eating nails. It hurt so bad . and my entire head was hurting

Did you diagnose yourself Newfibrogirl? Lol.... Your symptoms can be revolving around a possible infection.... Now with that being said...tell me when it started, cuz I don't remember when it started...and if you are in that amount of pain and you have had to change your eating habits and sleep etc....go to the ER...get it checked out..

Terri.. Well..uhhh.. Yes..I kind of did or rather my mom diagnosed it..and I looked it up online and the symptoms matched..ha...but also..today I was watching the news and they did a story on stroke in going people.. And I have four of the five symptoms... Sudden change in speak pattern pain in centralized area tingling and numbness...so..that had me thinking.. But I'm going to the Dr tomorrow.
The symptoms started yesterday afternoon for the pain and lack of movement in the jaw. The pain iinmy ear started a few weeks ago. And I had a very stressful out burst Sunday and the pain in my ear git much worse on Monday morning and yesterday afternoon the jaw locked up.
