Metal pins or plates? Or both? Do they hurt more in the cold?

Dec 22, 2014 12:59 PM

I feel that my metal hardware in my left ankle and I find that in the cold weather it aches more. Does anyone else find this happens to their hardware or is it just the location being so close to my skin on my outer ankle.

My sister had an ankle plate with screws and complained with colder weather. I have titanium plate & screws in my neck but it doesn't bother me.

I was in a motor vehicle accident in 2006 and shattered a lot of bones. I have pins/rods/screws in my L femur, pelvis, R humerus, C2-C3 vertebrae, R jaw.... Etc. to answer your question, yes, on cold, damp days I feel extra-achy in the places where I have metal. I use heating pads (the electric ones that heat at a consistent temperature for 2 hours) and over the counter anti-inflammatories to treat this discomfort.
