Migraines... Acupuncture??

Nov 28, 2014 5:40 AM

I have had migraines for about 6 years or so and I have tried A LOT of medicine and I'm only 19 I don't want to start destroying my body with "prevention" medicines that don't even help. I was wondering if anyone has tried acupuncture for their migraines. It is pretty expensive but trust me I'm willing to pay a fortune fit something that will actually help! I also have a lot of pain in my neck, shoulders, and lower back; on bad days I'll get a lot of leg and arm pains. My primary doctor and I have talked about fibromyalgia a few different times now because he said he's never seen someone my age so affected by, well whatever I have, such as all the joint pain I have and the practically constant migraines and all my other symptoms... but he hasn't truly diagnosed me with it. Basically I'm just wondering, has acupuncture worked for any migraine sufferers? Also if anyone who has fibromyalgia could talk to me and help me figure out if I have it too!

I also wanted to add my head and neck seriously hurts so bad right now I'm in tears. I can't sleep whatsoever. You can forget Advil and the muscle relaxers... Ha yeah right. I have nothing to take and I'm miserable :(

I love acupuncture, especially for my "face headaches" and sinus issues. You should definitely try it!

I think I'm going to! I have heard a lot of good results from it!

The results are cumulative so you need more than a couple of treatments in most cases. After 12 weeks my migraines went from I want to pull my head off to I can just wear some shades outside. Give it a try and be sure to talk to acupuncturist about any sensations. This does not hurt so unless the needle is in the wrong place you don't feel more than a pinch.

Sounds good! I'm excited to try it and hoping for the best :)

I have been to many alternative medicine specialists including 3 that used acupuncture as part of their treatment. It did absolutely nothing. Each acupuncturists promised the world and delivered nothing but an invoice.

I love acupuncture for my head pain and Lupus episodes. Water & needles it doesn't get any more organic than that. GOOD LUCK!

Acupressure also works very well and you can do it yourself. There is a really good series of books that you can probably find on Amazon or in a used book store called G-Jo. I would highly recommend them.

Blackberry. You might try zine therapy and EFT. These are both techniques that you can learn and do yourself. The EFT manual can be downloaded for free and there are plenty of videos on youtube explaining how to do it and zone therapy can be found on amazon for about eight bucks.

Sorry, that was supposed to be Zone Therapy by Wm. H. Fitzgerald.

A combination of either propranolol or topiramate (daily meds, topiramate is given more often now or if you are over weight) and acupuncture really helped me

You might also read up on feverfew. It's an herb that helps a lot of people.

If you are looking for acupuncture, try to see if your area has a community acupuncture center, their rates are significantly cheaper & still the same good professional bodywork. I went for my migraines. I definitely notice a difference with it. I also suggest trying massage, more expensive but feels incredible & very effective at pain relief

I'm already on the topiramate, 50mg twice a day which is quit a bit for me considering I'm 19 and I only weigh 90 pounds! lol I have been on it for a few months but just 50. I just not got upped to the twice a day. I haven't noticed much difference. I haven't gone to an acupuncturists yet I'm still debating because when I tell family/friends I get a lot of responses about Botox so im going to look in to the results because I decide!

I personally would tally to the Dr about taking the topiramate at night in one 10mg dose, that's what I do abs it works great. I Also used to have acupuncture before my pain consorting which really helped and so did massage.

Have you tried seeing a chiropractor?

Dec 21, 2014 7:13 PM

I did.... I even had spinal fusion done 01/28/12

Dec 21, 2014 8:35 PM

Botox injections are very helpful, I've found.

Dec 21, 2014 11:17 PM

Yeah I tried the chiropractic. I have a little curve at the top of my spine, not to bad though. He told me I could come back for my back but he couldn't offer much help with the mirgraines.

Accupuncture has worked wonders for me! You also might look at Ehlers Danlos Syndrome- some of the symptoms you listed and spinal curve are consistent with it. Most of us have terrible joint pain and awful migraines among other things
