Neck pain and long hair

Feb 28, 2016 3:24 PM

Kind of a random question but does anyone have worse pain because of long hair? I am debating on cutting mine because I was wondering if that would take some pressure off my neck. It's passed my shoulders. Not sure if it would help me at all.

Feb 28, 2016 3:38 PM

Hm, maybe if it was thick. I have long hair but I couldn't imagine that cutting it short would make a difference in my neck pain :/ it might make it easier to get hot/cold pads on though.

I have very thick, curly hair that tangles easily and makes migraines ten times worse. Pony trails used to give me migraines, and I went from "Klingon hair" (big, curly, long) to a buzz cut. It definitely reduced my headaches, but socially confuses people. I still get glares in public bathrooms, and kids scared of me because they're not sure of my gender. That's not fun, but being cool in summer, and reduced headaches are nice...

I have light baby fine long blonde hair. It does touch my arms and neck and back where I have Allodynia so it hurts if I'm not wearing a thick enough shirt. I usually keep my hair in braids so I don't have to brush it all day anyways. Brushing it hurts my nerves in my shouldersfrom moving so I'll do it twice a day only(if I don't it will dread).

I have chronic miraines that radiates into my neck and all down my spine, I also had hair nearly past my waist. And I don't Even have think hair, just ALOT of it. Last year I shaved my head...like just some fuzz on my head. And there was some pressure taken off but not a lot.

Feb 28, 2016 7:38 PM

Ferretbandit, I buzz cut mine once, accidentally. Lol my kids wouldn't be sewn in public with me! About 2 weeks later I started spiking it and got the most compliments ever. GI Jane but a year but longer. 😀

Feb 28, 2016 7:40 PM

Green23, I've worn my hair very short since my first neck fusions. I can't style my hair long so it's much easier on the arms & neck.

Feb 28, 2016 8:33 PM

My hair is so long that I sit on it. When I graduated high school my hair was to my knees. After graduation I had my hair cut so it just touched my shoulders. It was a HUGE difference! But then I couldn't put it up anymore and it made me itch everywhere it touched my skin. I let it grow again and now I braid it when it's wet and then I don't have to touch it for several days, which helps my shoulders.

Feb 28, 2016 10:42 PM

ScaryAnn, I do the exact same thing!!! My hair is down to my waist and it's VERY thick. I wash it in the shower, put it up in a braid and it's good for a couple days💕

I have very thick hair and after years of doctors telling me to cut it off I finally did! From my waist to pixie cut! Love it,made such a huge difference wished I did it when they first told me!

Mar 06, 2016 10:43 PM

I'm on my late 30's and have always had thick hair. I like to donate my hair, but can't get it to 12 inches from the chin because of neck pain and migraines. If thankful for Pantene because I only need 9 inches! Thank you for the question. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Mar 06, 2016 11:15 PM

I haven't noticed my long hair adding to my neck pain or headaches. I know if I look down to much especially at the phone or computer it increases both neck and headache pain.

Mar 07, 2016 9:05 PM

Lifting my arms to dry shoulder length or even chin length hair is excruciating for me in my neck & shoulders. I'm getting ready for a GI Jane.

Mar 09, 2016 4:04 PM

My hair is very thick and curly. I just cut 14 inches off it was down to my waist. The cut did NOT make a difference to my neck pain. On the upside I will be donating my hair again. I do not think I will cut it this short again. I can still put it in a ponytail but it ends up looking like a poodle even with tons of product in it. It will grow again lol. I just laugh when I comb it because it feels wierd.

Mar 09, 2016 11:01 PM

I am the same my hair is longish and I tend to braid mine,., although I have to do this in 3 or four bursts as I can't hold my arms up! But at least I don't have to worry about it for a few days. Otherwise I brush it in the shower trying not to get it too wet and put it in a loose bun ... The running water on my shoulders helps!

Mar 10, 2016 8:05 AM

It's nice to donate your hair. I've donated 5 feet of my hair over the years. I'm presently growing my hair once more to donate another foot and 6 feet will be the end of my donations. I think at 50 and being menopausal, my hair won't grow back as fast to donate it again

Mar 10, 2016 8:50 AM

Washing my hair in the shower or doing any thing above my head makes my arms go weak heavy and painfull. Or whisking anything like eggs or making a cake. Do you find just chewing gets your jaws as well some times.

Mar 10, 2016 9:56 AM

I have thick hair and if it gets much below my shoulders I start to get headaches and neck pain so I usually go get it cut and thinned and that help the headaches and some of the neck pain

Mar 10, 2016 10:13 AM

I've been blessed with very thick hair as well and surprisingly as I get older it has gotten darker!! It's really a nice shade of brunette and I've never, ever colored or permed or blow dried my hair. Every time I go get it cut, the stylists are always coming over and running their fingers through it!! I love the free massage.. LOL!!! At any rate, I don't find any difference in my neck pain or headaches if my hair is shorter or to my waist where it is now

Mar 10, 2016 1:58 PM

Gizmo, that jaw issue sounds like my TMJ/TMJD. I've had short hair since my first disc surgery in 1992. Every time my hair has grown even shoulder length it's worsened my headaches and neck & arm pain.

Jul 26, 2016 11:09 AM

My hair goes down to my waist. I've had it short and long and either way the pain is the same. The only problem is the heat in summer because I have such thick hair. Hope you get some relief. 💕🙏🏻🌻😊

Jul 26, 2016 11:39 AM

With the exception of several years in my early teens, I've always had BS-length hair. My hair is long and SUPER thick so it it is insanely heavy but because it's all I've ever known, I deal with it. I got forced into a much shorter cut than I wanted about 2 years ago (there was an "oops, I thought you WANTED it short!" miscommunication) so now I'm dealing with the fallout of that. I like that my hair isn't as heavy but I miss being able to braid it (even though my hands no longer cooperate often enough for it to matter).

Jul 26, 2016 3:52 PM

My hair is crazy thick and very long (I could go top less in public, lol). It has not made a difference in neck pain or headaches if it is almost at my waist long or at my shoulders. I usually wear it in a loose bun. I also have donated often just check out the places. Locks of love for example does not really provide wigs to cancer children because chemo baldness is temporary, they prefer people with alopecia. There are alot of places that pull on your heart strings.

Jul 27, 2016 11:33 AM

Mine is very short, above the ears, and has been since my first cervical fusion in 1992. I'm debating going pixie-short or maybe 'Jamie Lee Curtis' style. No matter what I get addressed as "Sir" often, until they actually look and see I'm so obviously female! I considered a buzz cut again, since the first two weeks post op are going to be limited showers. My neck & shoulders hurt so bad styling it anyway, and I don't know if surgery is going to help or worsen that. Hmm?

Jul 27, 2016 11:40 AM

My hair is down to my butt.🐫.. its only a problem when its wet... its a muscular discomfort tho...so i get more out of the confidence it gives me... than the pain it may cause me... worth it for sure, i love my hair 🐴

Jul 27, 2016 2:49 PM

LMB, that's awesome!! I have donated a total of 5 feet of hair. I have made 5 donations of 12" of hair over time. The picture I posted is hard to see but it's actually in a very tight French braid in the back so the rest of the braid just makes it over my shoulder. It goes almost to my waist when loose but I usually wear it in a pony tail or braid.

Jul 31, 2016 6:01 PM

When I have long hair and try to get a comb or brush through my hair I'll end up with the most excruciating neck pain and gives me a horrible headache and that is why I have short cropped hair so if you have neck pain never grow your hair out and that is what I have experienced in the past and my opinion is long hair can cause neck pain at least that is my opinion.

Jul 31, 2016 6:45 PM

I have been having a lot of skin pain on my neck - almost like sunburn and almost like itchy but not quite either. I cut my hair short this year but I'm growing it out again now because I can't put it up out of the way of my neck when it's short

Jul 31, 2016 8:11 PM

Hi there are some really cute ladies clipper cuts that they only use clippers to cut your hair and they are from cute to elegan, sophisticated and dignified and you should consider clipped hair rather than the 1990s to 2010s try a clipper cut instead of a scissor cut that is what I were and they look very nice just give it a try, ask the hair stylist for the women's clipper cuts using shavers and then you'll see what I mean, and when they start growing out then you have a new hair style so give it a shot and then tell me what you think! I wear clipper cuts and there are thousands of styles of clipper cuts to choose from take it from me hope for the best! I'd like to hear from you and God bless you!

I think it will depend on what kind of pain you have. I have a lot of pain in my face and scalp, so putting any clips in my hair can trigger pain down into my neck. If it's really bad, I cut my hair shorter and it does help, but I think it's because it eases the pain in my scalp.

Give short hair a try. Changes are fun and it's only hair. It'll grow back.

Aug 03, 2016 8:57 AM

Hello, I"m sorry, I failed to tell you electric razors and shavers not hair clips that you put the your hair please forgive me if I did not specify the term clippers.

Aug 03, 2016 8:54 PM

I have long hair and other than making me sweat. No problems here.

Aug 04, 2016 3:20 AM

I had to cut my long hair. It was just about at the bottom of my back. I miss it but it did help my neck pain a little. But instead of cutting my hair I am hoping to just cut the underneath and leave the rest long because I do miss my long hair.

Aug 14, 2016 11:36 AM

I had the same problem. Got my hair layered & it helps. Left the length. They also can layer underneath so 1 length is showing.

Aug 16, 2016 12:21 AM

My muscles are pinching some nerves in my neck and some days I feel like I can't support my head.

Aug 16, 2016 4:19 AM

My hair doesn't hurt my neck BUT my hair adds to the fatigue of of my fibro, I dread the day to wash my hair, I have long very thick hair and to dry it takes an hour an by then my arms back and neck are KO'd. I get extremely bad head sore to, so if I put my hair in a pony for a few hours I'll get head sore. I have wondered life will be so much easier just to cut it short so I don't have to bother with it but ive not come to terms with that yet as I do love my hair even though it's a pain (excuse the pun😄)

Aug 16, 2016 5:14 AM

Mine is very thick heavy and was long recently got a pixie cut best thing I ever did. X

Aug 16, 2016 7:28 PM

HollyFibroCfsEndo I have always had the same problem. I git my hair layered & it helped tremendously! But still if I wear my hair in a ponytail all day I get a headache

Aug 17, 2016 3:05 AM

I put mine up with chopsticks 🐴

Aug 17, 2016 6:27 AM

Hello everyone I used have short hair for many years. It's growing now and I notice that my headaches have increased and my head very sore to the touch? Was wondering if that could be the cause 😥

Aug 17, 2016 6:31 AM

It could be Tina. Is your hair very thick and heavy?? If so that could very well be the cause.

Good luck!

Aug 17, 2016 6:38 AM

Not really very thick but I noticed my front head is ever so sore maybe because of how I pull them back to keep them out of the way

Aug 17, 2016 7:01 AM

Tina, that could very well be the case. I have RSD. It has settled into all the areas I had surgery. So, if my hair is in a braid, it burns and it sucks. Maybe try letting it dry naturally and then brushing it back. Perhaps that would help!! Sending gentle {{{Hugs)))💕🙏🏻🌻😊

Aug 18, 2016 8:06 PM

Hi Green23,

I had long hair and just recently cut it short. When it was long I only had pain when I put it into a high pony tail or bun, it would give me a tension headache. Other than that I never noticed any other problems.

Ready to start relieving your pain?
