Need to discuss this one again..tmj flare up help

Jan 22, 2017 4:02 PM

So I've been gone for a while. Been in a real dark place. Losts have been happening with mom and even myself. But for the last four days I've had the worst migraine and case of TMj . The dr suggested that I go get the cocktail injection if it doesn't get better. My face has been Swollen and the pain off the charts. What do you guys do for this? Is the cocktail a sure thing to work?

Con you apply heat to it. Does that help. That's the only thing I know. I've never had that injection so I don't know.

Well I had to wrap my head with a ice and heat at them time. That worked very well for a short a time.

Oh newfibrogirl, I'm soo sorry I wish there was something I could do to help you thro your troubles with you mum, if you need to vent or just want to talk then please I'm always here.

I wish there was something I could say about your TMJ flare as my doctor or pain clinic nurse won't suggest anything like that injection....probably because of the trigeminal neuralgia pain on top of my TMJ pain. What seems to keep my pain at a level 9 rather than off the scale is amitriptyline and morphine mst and if the pain is off the scale I also take cocodamols 8/500mg and a 5% lidocaine plaster over my cheek which I cut so it also goes behind my ear.
Just a side thought have you been to the dentist recently? Just to make sure there's nothing triggering the flare there like an abscess or wisdom teeth? Just covering all bases.

I hope you find some relief soon xx

I have been to a dentist although I still need to find a better one. It was discovered I've git periodontal disease and once they found that I was refused further treatment because my insurance didn't cover it. So that pissed me.off. my pcd diagnosis the TMJ but was all before my surgery so it was out on the back burner til after surgery. And I've not gotten to my next appointment time yet.

The only thing that helps mine is to massage the joints. Hurts like the Dickens at first, but feels so much better when it finally relaxes. And make sure you're not gritting your teeth.

I'm gonna try it. But I also wonder if me doing some face tightening excerise coukd have imflamedthe joint.

It's possible. My dentist diagnosed me, but he doesn't treat it. And NYS Medicaid won't cover treatment.

Newfibrogirl, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. My dentist just made me a new thick rubbery type of night splint for my grinding which flares my TMJ and worsen the deterioration of the joints. I'd bought one from the orthodontist (previous dentist sent me to) at $1500.00 and when it cracked into I couldn't afford to replace it. Any dentist should be able to make you one for a couple hundred dollars. And having periodontal disease shouldn't be an issue. Like Scaryann, I massage my joints, but I sometimes use pain ointment when I do the massage. I prefer heat on the joints. My ortho surgeon says my C2-C3 disc issues are also flaring my TMJ. I hadn't even considered that as a cause. I've had the shots and yes they do help, sometimes long term and sometimes short term. I hope you feel better soon! Hugs love & prayers 🙂💕🙏🌸
