Neuro surgery extras

Mar 17, 2016 12:23 PM

Saw a PA at my neurosurgeon about my lumbar disaster area. When he heard me say my hands also were tongling, he had a quick neck xray done (they have an in office xray room, so handy!) Well, now I know why my neck crackles and hurts! Not only is C6 doing the same as my thoracic and lumbar, but I have bone spurs on each facet of my neck, so bad they look like teeth!
So in addition to a fusion, I guess they will do a laminectomy as well. I'm in for a fun summer. :-(
I see the actual doctor in 2 weeks for him to see my tests and schedule the surgery - most likely in May, they don't delay when they know that is all that can help.

This same group is where I had my hip joint repaired, they are excellent doctors with an exceptional hospital - St Joseph's in Burbank.

I just hate being bedridden and in pain, when if I'm healing. And of course, the whole back surgery thing scares my pants off. There's quite a bit of risk, of course. But as risky as it is, it will stop the bone on bone of my lumbar spine, and I won't fall down because I can't feel my feet.

What an absolute nightmare. I have the same type of issues throughout my spine and the cervical spine is horrendous. I've had laminotomies and laminectomies from C1-C6, nerve blocks and they were going to do nerve burning but are thinking fusion instead. How will I move my neck if it's all fused? I've already had 29 surgeries in the first 18 years of my pain journey and am putting off right shoulder reconstruction and 2 knee replacements.. I can't imagine this fusion... I hope all goes well for you and brings you some relief. Sending reassuring {{{Hugs}}} and prayers for a complete and quick recovery with less pain. 💕🙏🏻🌻

Although you posted this 10 months ago, I thought I'd let you know that I've had a multi level cervical fusion & 2 lumbar fusions (last one just 2 months ago). The cervical fusion went really well. I have degenerative disk disease & had bone spurs also. I was having chronic migraines & since the cervical fusion have only had maybe 1 migraine (from stress)!! The scar on my throat is hardly noticeable now (almost a year ago) and recovery went really well. By the 2nd week, I was back to almost a normal routine with very little pain. I wore a bone growth stimulator 4 hours a day, everyday, for 3-4 months. I was back at work the 2nd week (desk job) although I would have some stiffness. I consider the cervical fusion very successful & regret I didn't do it sooner! I'm still recovering from the multilevel lumbar fusion done in November 2016, but already feel better than I did before surgery.

I too have complete fusion of C3-7. I have greater range of motion post fusions than prior and NO more migraine! I can also tell the difference now between my rotator cuff shoulder pain and pain related to my neck which felt like Eagle talons digging into the top of my shoulder and into front collar bone! My lumbar 3-S1 fused as well.
Car accident forced level above out. That's the biggest problem. The adjoining level is weakened with the fusions. Good luck to you! We will be laid up about same time likely!
