New meds

Mar 11, 2015 8:23 PM

New meds always make me nervous. I've been on gabapentin for around 5 weeks. Still get super dizzy from it. But to make sure I don't lose the lovely feeling of dizziness, I'm starting Cymbalta tomorrow. In not thrilled. :-/ the one downfall of my PCP is his love for prescribing things. But I do have a lot of the issues it is used for.

I'm really hurting today. Lots of weather change this week. I often leave the chiropractor feeling a lot better but today I left wanting to cry. My lumbar hurts so much. And my legs are burning and weak.

Mar 11, 2015 9:15 PM

Aliya, I've only been on gabapentin about 5-6 weeks. And I've had odd dizziness when moving quickly. I kept saying it was my vertigo. Is that the type of dizziness you're getting?

Mar 12, 2015 6:10 AM

What other types of dizziness are there?

Mar 12, 2015 6:48 AM

I have heard good things about Cymbalta. I can't take it because I had a bad reaction to it when I tried. I hope it works for you. I understand the fear of trying new meds. I am starting one today but fingers crossed it will work and I will be able have less pain.

I have been taking Gabapentin for yrs my PCP started me on it for migraines. I have taken 300 MG four x day, recently he upped it to 600 MG four times day. I have noticed some dizziness if I stand up fast. But it's not too bad. My Neuro started me on CQ 10 3 x a day. It has seemed to help a little I don't have them as frequently as I did.

Mar 12, 2015 9:34 AM

I have been on gabapentin since September and the dizziness from that has calmed down. I was dizzy and falling before the gabapentin and I still do that. The worst side effect for me has been the terrible sugar craving. I didn't realize that until the Dr said something to me yesterday. When I say sugar craving I mean out of control have to have even eatting sweet stuff I don't like.

Mar 12, 2015 10:22 AM

I use to get dizzy from gab 300 x4 day then after years it's at 800 mg x4times a day but I don't get dizzy anymore and it still helps about 75% of the times

Mar 12, 2015 10:57 AM

Omg, Shammagren, I've been craving sweets too. But I thought it was stress related.

Mar 12, 2015 12:19 PM

I've been craving sweets too but I thought it was sweet tooth related. Lol.

Mar 13, 2015 12:48 AM

The sweet craving is crazy bad so glad the doc at pain clinic said that. I am trying to watch it now but it is hard. I am trying to figure out what to replace it with. He gave me a list of yes and no foods for fibro too. I was glad to see most of the no foods were things I don't like.

One of the possible side effects of the duloxetine is lower appetite. I'm hoping I get that. Haha. Could handle losing a couple pounds (or 50).
Yesterday I ended up being totally fine on my first dose until afternoon. I got four kids down for naps and was talking to a friend and fell asleep on the couch. I never fall asleep like that. But I was so dizzy and sleepy for a couple hours. Couldn't eat dinner. And went to bed early.

Mar 13, 2015 7:58 AM

Anyone else talk ng Levothyroxine have a loose to diarrhea stomach? I've been on it just 3 days and every day I'm having this. Yesterday my stomach cramped like twisting pain but today I didn't have that. Both days my whole intestinal track gurgles until I go to the bathroom. The upside is maybe I can come off the Linzess (for IBS extreme sluggish tract).

Mar 13, 2015 8:14 AM

hmm... i never had any issues at all with it.

Mar 13, 2015 8:16 AM

And that's not even listed as a possible side effect. My guess is that it's unrelated unless you have a sensitivity to one of the ingredients or something along that nature.

Mar 13, 2015 9:27 AM

Flappy are you taking magnesium? I have been on levo for years and anytime I have a dosage change I have to back off the magnesium for a while as it helps with bowel movements too.

Mar 13, 2015 11:26 AM

No Shammagren, I don't take magnesium. But I did read on the link Aliya posted that its likely as side effect that will go away. I called my GI doc and they told me to hold off taking the Linzess and see if my body adjusts. They said because constipation is a problem with thyroid issues, now with the med I may not need the Linzess. That would be wonderful, to come off a med! My husband worries about my liver, and most of my doctors have expressed concern. But they gave them to me for legit reasons, and in reality most are PRN meds only. Is magnesium important?

Mar 13, 2015 11:51 AM

Magnesium is SO important. In fact, read up on magnesium deficiency symptoms. You might be surprised how many you have. Magnesium is one of the first supplements I started taking last fall. (I've been fairly anti-supplement most of my adult life which hasn't been all that long).

Mar 13, 2015 1:33 PM

Shammagrin can you share that list on Fibro that the Dr gave you ? I have taken Gabapentin for yrs and never knew about it making crave sugar. That explains a lot I have been eating a lot of sugar again and I thought I was being weak and not an underlying problem being sabotaged. Flappsy I hope you get your stomach issues straghtend out. My sister has had some kind of bug causing bloating with stomach pain and diarrhea go the last 4 days. Hope you get better soon.

Mar 13, 2015 5:12 PM

Weezie I put it in a new topic called low polyamide diet

Mar 13, 2015 6:24 PM

Aliya I'll check that out. Weezie12, I'm doing fine. Thanks to you both

Mar 13, 2015 6:54 PM

I was recently change from fluoxetine to cymbalta with no problems at all. I was changed because apparently cymbalta helps with hot flushes (menopause) but the added advantage is that it helps a tiny bit with the back pain. It took a month or so for the hot flushes to subside but I don't get any now.

Mar 13, 2015 6:57 PM

I find it interesting you mention hit flashes. Yesterday and today (basically since I started it) I have NOT been able to regulate my temperature. Swinging between hot and cold.
I'm hopeful that this helps my pain and maybe even my headaches.

Mar 13, 2015 7:23 PM

Meds are weird things, I was a migraine sufferer since I was 13 until I started taking Lyrica (Pregabalin) for nerve pain and since then my migraines have greatly reduced in frequency. Apparently it is used "off label" for migraines. Added bonus :)

Mar 14, 2015 2:14 AM

I told my dr. I was concerned about (worse) headaches being a side effect but he said the duloxetine (Cymbalta) is used for migraines.
It is really messing with my sleep cycle! This week is really off anyway but I don't think this is helping. Both afternoons when the delayed release releases I cannot stay awake and sleep on the couch for half an hour or so. Thankfully I work in the mornings and my kids nap in the afternoon.
I went to bed at 8:00 and fell asleep around 9:15 and have been wide awake since 2:00 for over an hour.

Mar 14, 2015 2:55 PM

Thanks Shammagrin for the diet

Mar 14, 2015 6:55 PM

No problem weezie. Did you see the free stomp book I posted?

Is anyone on gabapentin and cymbalta? My pain specialist mentioned starting cymbalta in a low dose and if I can handle it slowly increasing it. Of course I didn't write down what he said so I can't remember if it was a change or an addition

Mar 14, 2015 7:29 PM

I have been taking Gabapentin since 2000 my Dr started me on 300 MG 4x day and about 2 months ago he upped my dose to 600 MG 4 x day. He originally put me on it for migraines. I also take for nerve pain in my lower body Savella I went to a Dr in Houston that specializes in Syringomyelia and other disorders. He said with my history I needed pain meds not only for my upper nerves but my lower ones as well. I have been on it now for 4 yrs., at first my insurance which is a medicare suppliment was fine with it but after I'd been on it for about a yr and half they decided to take it off of their formulary list, and I had to take Lyrica instead. So for three months I suffered with Lyrica it was just like taking Tylenol, I asked my Dr if he would help get back on the Savella. It took us a good month and half to get them to agree to let me have it.So every yr the Dr has to file paper work stating that Lyrica doesn't work on me. I have to pay more every month $69.00, and when I get in the doughnut hole I pay $98.00 a month. But it's worth it.

Mar 14, 2015 9:33 PM

Shammagren I am now on both gabapentin and Cymbalta. On the gabapentin for my Cervicogenic headaches. I don't think it does much for me really.

Mar 14, 2015 11:40 PM

I have taken Cymbalta before but it didn't work for me.

Mar 15, 2015 1:21 AM

Thanks Aliya the gabapentin did a little for me with pain as I explain to my husband it is like driving 70 then slowing to 60 you are still going fast. So I am still hurting pretty good but no longer having the pain bouts that my husband said looked like seizures. The dr. must have been adding it to my ever growing list of meds.

Mar 15, 2015 11:04 AM

Cymbalta is now almost exclusively used for chronic pain. Cymbalta is now rarely used for depression. If you can make it past the side effects during the first 2 to 3 weeks you should see a good result maybe cut your pain by 30 to 40%. I could not take the Cymbalta for me the side effects were one end or the other was stuck in a toilet. Two solid weeks of hell. Gabapentin is great for most people, but I had to stop taking it because it made me jerk. Total body jerk so hard I shook the whole bed horrible feeling. Sadly it was the only medication that helped with nerve pain. Wish you good luck with Cymbalta!

Mar 16, 2015 9:58 AM

I thought Cymbalta was ineffective for my MDD until I stopped it (MD supervision) and my depression got even worse and unstable. It is doing nothing for my knee OA pain. I take 90 mg.

Mar 16, 2015 6:56 PM

I was on cymbalta for my fibromyalgia & depression for 6 months and was physically feeling better. But over the next 3 months I became another person with a jekyll-hyde attitude. They took me off the cymbalta because the pain also started increasing (side effect) and I began having suicidal thoughts (wanting to die...side effect2). I'm on gabapentin now.
