Night sweats and itching, what the heck????

Jan 30, 2016 4:06 AM

I'm 52 and have had night sweats for some time, but now I have been drenching through everything and having to change my clothing and bedding 2,3 and sometimes 4 times a night! I'm clawing myself so much that I'm drawing blood and making bruises!! I take Claritin and benadryl for the itching, and it still doesn't help! I take hormone email replacement for the sweats. Anyone else do this??

Your situation sounds unpleasant. You have night sweats as in hot flashes or night sweats?
Some things I have noticed and/or done for myself. I have had medications cause night sweats.
I am 47. I have an IUD in and have been on hormone replacement. I needed to stop the estrogen patch because of migraines and severe boob pain with lumps. Hot flashes started at 38 and have been off and on. I use to sleep on a foam because of my pain. Also one of our mattresses had a foam top. I would wake up soo hot and wet. So I only use it if I get desperate.
Currently I use a soaker pad so I don't have to change the bedding or reck my mattress. A bath or beach towel could be used. I change pj's as necessary. Take a shower. Sometimes sleep naked. My Gyne says to sleep without underwear to let it breath down there.
I wonder about why you are itchy?
I have tracked my symptoms. I get VERY itchy before my periods. I call it crouch itchitis, it gets horrible. I have learnt to keeping my sugar level even, using only natural sugar in fruit or very little sugar no more than 6-9 teaspoons in total a day. Decreases my itch and yeast infections. I use cotton panties with no elastic. Bamboo cloth sanitary pads. No store bought pads or liners. I use baby soap or something with minimal irritants to wash my underwear and pads, add a second rinse to wash. No fabric softener or bounce sheets in dryer. I have used ice packs on my crouch for flare ups. Also cornstarch helps with calming area and absorbs sweat, but now I am told corn starch contains sugar.
In past I have had general itchiness from side effects of medication.
Sleepinbeauty I hope you will be able to get some relief or time away from this at some point.

Sleepingbeauty, isn't Menopaus grand?? NOT!!! I deal with night sweats and hot flashes and the mood swings, etc. sometimes I get itchy from being so sweaty. I can no longer sleep in a bed due to my pain and have slept in a recliner for 8 years now. It has many drawbacks but it's all I have. I don't have the room or money for an adjustable base bed or I'd have one. I did used to sleep in the nude much of the time as I have suffered hot flashes since I was 16. I've been having a problem with itching For a bit now and what's strange is its "deep" itching and when you scratch, which hurts me, it stops for a moment and comes right back. Many times you'll see me rubbing against a door jam like a bear on a tree to scratch. I have also been having an issue with itchy breasts which is enough to drive me nuts. I get it especially around my nipples and even the slightest brush across my breast by clothing, a touch, a hug and I start to itch, I'm intensely sensitive there. Been. Noticing that each month, even though I'm going through menopause and may not get a cycle, I get the itching in my breasts and my other itching becomes worse. I don't get relief from Benedryl or any other allergy med or antihistamine. I hope that you can get some relief for your symptoms and start getting better sleep. {{{Hugs}}} πŸ’•πŸ˜ŠπŸŒ»

The night sweats and your age leads me to think menopause/peri-menopause symptoms. Do you dress to start warm or cold during the day? When I started into menopause, surgically induced at 34, I dressed in short sleeves on freezing cold weather. I couldn't stand any clothing up around my neck or is break out in a sweat. Like you I was walking up and charging clothes multiple times.

Two years ago I developed hypothyroidism and now I stay cold. But I have a memory foam bed, and they do tend to keep me hot. It has to be in the 30's or colder at night for me to sleep in winter pj's; typically I wear summer pj's year round. In the hot summer I use baby powder, rubbing it all over sweaty areas. I even bought sweat band liners to put between me and my bras; they absorb sweat.

The itching sounds like possible allergies, or pruritis. Have you started any new meds? I have opportunities (itching) and have no idea why. It flares up here & there, and I usually use Gold Bond lotion for itching, benadryl, and some times itch ointment. I do have allergies and asthma, so I wash my clothes in baby Dreft. The scent is subtle without being overpowering, and it doesn't smell like glue (unscented detergents). Lol. I hope everyone's suggestions can help you find ways to get through this phase of life. Hugs, love, & prayers! πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸ’•πŸŒΌ

Thanks so much everyone. I guess it's time I admit what's really happening. Menopause! The itching is mostly on your face and neck. I've changed makeups, cleansers, detergants, ect. Didn't think about it until reading your posts that my pillow is foam. I think I'll try using a different pillow tonight and see if that helps.
As far as sugar, I don't eat sugar. I found a couple of years ago that it really increases my inflamation, so I cut it out of my diet.
Guess I can hope that these sweats won't last for much longer. I've dealt with them for a couple of years, but as of the last month or so, they have been much worse. Ugh! As if we don't have enough to deal with, right?
May we all rest well in our nakedness tonight, haha!!

Anyone else get the moving itch?? I have belt buckle scars on my back (long story, crappy childhood bullies)... they're tiny but my nerves are messed up so I have various numb and hyper sensitive spots. But I'll get an itch, the kind you CAN'T ignore, and try to scratch it..... And it MOVES!!! Wtf? I look like a crazy woman trying to get to it and catch it lol. Thank GOD I have a boyfriend with fast growing fingernails who is awesome at back scratches. But I get the all over itching, night sweats, chills when I wake up in the middle of the night (it feels like it goes deep into muscle and bone to the point where my limbs almost don't feel like mine and I'll shiver and teeth chatter until I can thaw), and omg the itchy nipple.... Do you know how hard it is to scratch an itchy nipple?!? I'm 43 and on birth control pills. Possibly in perimenopause.....

Sleeping beauty, I'm 35 years old and I swear I'm starting to go through the change. Hot flashes from hell(have to stick my head in the freezer at Walmart most times), Horrid cycles, air conditioning on even in winter, short sleeve shirts, mood swings from hell, etc. I do get it.

Jan 31, 2016 4:16 AM

Poor girl! 35 is young, but I started when I was 39 after having my tubes tied. They were intermittent over the years. Now that my periods have stopped, WHEW!!

Jan 31, 2016 4:23 AM

Sleeping, and when I try to explain that to my doc, he just looks at me like I'm absolutely crazy already, but no biggie.

Jan 31, 2016 4:26 AM

Well honey, your doc is not you! Sometimes I think they put every person in the body of what they read in a book! Be your own advocate dear.

Jan 31, 2016 4:32 AM

Btw, next time I go to Walmart, I'll be watching the milk cooler section a bit closer while I sit across the Isle with my butt in the butter and egg cooler, haha! If you see me, just wave!! πŸ˜‰
