Nothing is working.

Apr 29, 2016 3:40 PM

When I saw the second neurosurgeon I thought he would listen to my health history, explain how he could help me, and if that help involved surgeries, what I needed to know to make a decision. (The first n. Surg. Said I was beyond his expertise.) I think #2 doc thought I was there To schedule surgery. He said I would have to make the decision what I would do next (schedule) before he would tell me in what ways it would impact my life. The only thing he suggested I do was ride a recumbent fitness bicycle So I would be stronger as I cannot walk very far.
OK. A couple months go by. I don't want the cost of a gym membership, so I purchase a recumbent bike. I started getting up an hour earlier( that is if I managed to actually fall asleep) and for the last 2 weeks have ridden for 30 minutes each morn. I enjoy it as I desperately miss the 5 mile walks I used to take before chronpain.
The thing is I feel worse! I can barely make it to the bathroom and back. My lower back is inflamed. Standing upright is very difficult. And the insurance won't do the prior authorization for the prescription for my Barrett's, my stomach is hurting so bad, everything I eat upsets it or does not stay down.
I want to weep. A lot. Nothing is working.

Silvrrry, I'm sorry to hear your doctor didn't provide the help you need. Exercising is good, but 30 minutes may be too long to do since it's been awhile from your 5 mile walks. I'm trying to build up my ability to walk with a treadmill. But I'm doing my walks in 10-15 minutes increments. I didn't get where I'm at overnight and I'm not going to be able to go back to even half my old abilities overnight. I listen to my body and if after doing one walk my body says no more, then I rest. Take your time to build up, and do gentle stretches before and after. If my calves are cramping at bedtime I rub ointment into them so they don't hurt so bad. Build up your ability to ride at a slow and steady pace. Skip a day if you need to. You can do this, even if it takes awhile to get where you want to be! 👍

I know how you feel on the Barrett's because I have it too. My doc has taken me off my meds so he can implant a device in my esophagus next Friday. It will measure the acid reflux and the hiatal hernia actions, and it will fall off after 48 hours appx. It feels like something just clamps down and blocks my food from moving out of my stomach. Not having any meds to take has inflamed my acid reflux to the point I don't want to eat. If I bend over hot burning liquid tries to come up my throat. He told me I can use Tagamet or pepcid until Tuesday night so I picked some up. It's not great, but it's better than nothing. Do you have any OTC meds to use? I admit, being on rx strength for years, it's almost like taking nothing. But I've found that a glass of milk or a 1/2 cup of plain yogurt help with the acid burn. Hugs & prayers you'll get the rx approved, and your endurance will build up slow and steady without causing pain to the point you want to give up. You can do this, but we're here when you needed to vent. (((Hugs))) 🙂💕🙏🌼

My neurosurgeon said no on me having back surgery also said no bending, lifting or twisting. He told me to start slow with exercise and let my body adjust before increasing so I would concur that you are over doing it is why you have an increase in pain. Try taking a day or two off maybe walk a little instead then try less time on the bike not pushing to hard.

Flappy avoid Tagamet. There are so many drug interactions with this medication it is acarey. I am suprised it was ever sold as OTC. Just goes to show you really do need to check all medications with your Pharmacist - always!

LMB, thanks! I had no idea. I got provide but it's not helping. I may be on a liquid diet but next Friday. Everything I'm eating is causing high acid reflux. And I'm avoiding fatty, rich, or spicy foods. 🙂💕🙏🌼

After I posted last, I decided to call my doctor's assistant to ask about the hold up on medicine. After that I thought maybe I should have called the clinic coordinator of prescription medication (I probably should used caps & gold leaf for that job description) so I dialed & left a message there, too. I am a notoriously slow to anger person I will tell you ahead of time. After waiting all day she called back at about 5 o'clock. Cecilia of illustrious job description above was sarcastic, angry, rude & downright nasty. She berated me for leaving messages "everywhere" saying she was not doing her job, & she could only do so much, the doctor is tired, his assistant is tired & she works too hard for somebody to suggest otherwise. I am afraid she pushed the 10 year button (as my family says) and I lost my temper & told her the things I said above. I'm wondering if I will need a new doctor & if I will ever get my prescription filled now.
I hung up the phone & wept for half hour. I guess I feel better.

Silvrry I am so sorry that you are going through all of this nonsense. When you began to ride the recumbent bike I think the mistake you made was doing it for 30 minutes a day from the start. Your body didn't have the opportunity to get used to it by breaking it in slowly. I pray that you find the balance and are able to get your body moving again. On the other hand, you need to go ahead and call the insurance company and get yourself a patient liaison and they can help you with your prescription and your other doctor issues. You need to have someone on your side from the medical side to have your back. I hope that the insurance company is able to help you get where you need to be. Sending you gentle {{{Hugs}}} and prayers for a better day. 💕🙏🏻🌻😊

Thank you Alwayzinpain. I think the reason I lost my temper was stress. Have been hurting bad & vomiting & dry heaves without the acid med Dexilant I have been taking for about since it came out. I regret losing my temper, so stress from that. I think I will do as you suggest to call ins. & I did take the morning off of biking. I cannot walk unaided very far, so exercise is recumbent bike, and core stuff, I have been very fragile emotionally today, hoping tomorrow is better 😶

O M G I hurt so bad today. My shoulders, elbow, knees, feet, hands, even the little joints in all my fingers. My neck feels like an elephant slept all night on it and all the nerve symptoms kicked up a notch. This is what I get for such an emotional day yesterday. It is part of the reason I don't like to lose my temper, I always suffer afterward. The other reason is I dislike hurting someone the way one does with temper blast. Thanks for being here. 💕

Silvrrry- totally understand & agree. We are a lot alike. Sometimes temper blasts are a requirement. We have been dealt crappy cards in this life. What's great about "us" is that we are sensitive to the effect of that. She didn't have any right to lose her professionalism with you. She really didn't know who she was dealing with. 😉 I hope you found some resolution with your situation. And I also hope you can put the bat away and be gentle with yourself. I feel like we could be "ticking time bombs" however somehow we are able to hold it together almost every single day! 🤗💗☕️

Silvrrry, I'm sorry to hear you are hurting worse. It's never a good thing when we are pushed beyond our breaking points. My temper rarely gets the best of me or anyone else, because like you it takes a lot. But when it does...😠 Hide! Lol 😱. I hope you've Bren able to get some support through the insurance. Do you think exercising too long caused a flare? I wish I knew something to take it away.

I had PT this morning on my neck and the tech did physical manipulation, kneading, and massage on the upper shoulders & neck. I had to close my eyes to be able to relax, because I was nervous about the neck discs. Omg! Just 10 minutes and all the knots, tightness and pain was gone. Then she rubbed in biofreeze and warned me the next 48 hours might be real painful. Shucks!! If you can, try to get quiet & still to let your body relax. Listen to some sound effects, like nature sounds. Maybe that will help a little bit. Hugs & prayers things go much better for you this week! 🙂💕🙏🌼

Great ideas Auto. & Flappys! I appreciate yr concern. Today I only rode 15 mins & am thinking to maybe do the other 15 in afternoon. Although, it is going to be 90 degrees here today, so I may cop out on that. Thanks you two. Hope you have a mild pain day. Lol we say that instead of have a good day!!!!

May 02, 2016 2:10 PM

Silvrry, I don't know if this is a good idea because I don't know your situation. But would it help you to put ice on the part of your back that gets inflamed after you exercise each day right after. Like treat it right away before it has time to get inflamed. It would seem like you could stop some of the inflammation. If I don't know what I am talking about, I am very sorry. I don't mean to be ignorant if I am in this case.

Thanks profiler. That was something I had not thought to do. Geez, one little argument & I go all to pieces & my management memory is completely erased. Lol

Profiler reminded me that at PT they use heat or exercise bike or treadmill to warn up before working on the muscles.
