Obtaining insurance after winning disability case

Jun 14, 2016 6:36 PM

Has anyone had this problem: I won my disability case (yeah) and received my retro payment (yeah). But wait here it comes....The monthly checks have started to arrive. Next step social security sent me my Medicare card. Problem it is ONLY part A. I should have both parts A and B. I have been calling Social Security every 2 weeks since I was approved in April. The problem is part A is for hospitals only and they only cover 70% of charges. That being said in order to purchase supplementary insurance for doctor and prescriptions you must have Medicare part B. Side note the reason I only call every 2 weeks is they will not take any information unless you have waited 15 days since the last inquiry. I spoke with Medicare and they do not enroll you into their program social security does that. Out of pure frustration and many Google searches I called my attorney to see if this was a common issue. Well much to my suprise I am apparently very special and unique. In the twenty years of the practice that only does disability they have never encountered this problem. Has this happened to anyone and how did you finally solve the issue. According to Social Security after you have been receiving payments for 24 months (people under 65 only) they automatically enroll you to Medicare part B. Seriously? The whole point if disability is you need medical care now not after a 24 month wait. Has anyone encountered this? Sorry the post was so lengthy.

My sister went through the same exact thing. She was 56 at the time.
