On vacation and having a MRSA flare up

Aug 03, 2015 10:38 AM

Of course this would happen this week. On a family vacation 4+ hours away from home. Got spots on my back, my sacrum and my butt. Just loving this already(not). It also feels like another abscess is popping up into my most recent surgical incision. Have tried antibiotics, Hibiclens, bactroban, etc. there is no hospital or urgent care clinic close to us that has my medical history. Will just have to wait until I get home already. Nothing else I can do about it now. Thanks for listening.

Aug 03, 2015 5:21 PM

Oh no, that's terrible Amanda! Even though they may not have your history, don't put of going if you worsen. They can call your doc and have him/her fax basics, or call and talk to them. If nothing else, call your doc and tell them what's happened and how far away you are, and ask if they can call something in to the closest pharmacy. Praying for you! 🙏🌼

Aug 03, 2015 5:24 PM

Thanks Flappy. Might need to do so later on in the week if needed. Unfortunately for me, the only options I have left are IV antibiotics(ugh). It can probably wait until then.

Aug 03, 2015 5:51 PM

Oh I hope & pray it won't get worse! (((Hugs))) for your frustration! 🙏🌼

Aug 03, 2015 7:22 PM

Amanda, I know that with your vast experience with MRSA, I would not put off calling the doctor just to be on the safe side. Ask him/her directly if it's safe for you to wait that long for treatment. I'll be thinking of you and praying that it doesn't get any worse. {{{{hugs}}}} 💕🙏🏻🌻

Aug 03, 2015 7:31 PM

I just called them this afternoon. Waiting for a call back tomorrow from his nurse.

Aug 04, 2015 1:51 PM

Alwayz, I just spoke to them to set up an appointment. Next available is September 9th but on the list for a cancellation. Will be speaking to my primary surgeon if it gets any worse between now and then. I also have another course of antibiotics waiting at the pharmacy when I get home if I need them. That's the best we can do. Of course, can't work until I get cleared by my infectious disease specialist unfortunately. However, it could be worse.

Aug 05, 2015 6:15 PM

Just curious. How did they figure it was MRSA? I almost died from this in 2010 and still have reoccurring boils and absesses that antibiotics won't get rid of. I'm uncomfortable. How do they diagnose this chronically?

Aug 05, 2015 7:47 PM

Sweetie, they opened up one of my abscesses surgically and cultured the wound drainage. Sorry, can't be of more help tonight. Having a migraine from hell.

Aug 05, 2015 8:10 PM

Amanda, just a thought. Have you tried tee tree oil on sores? It is worked wonders for me in the past. Will be praying for you... And your migrane... Ugh... Sorry

Aug 05, 2015 8:18 PM

Yes, blessed. I've tried that but can't do it due to skin allergy issues as well. There has been several diagnosis thrown around at me recently. Surgeon says it's hidradenitis(which is autoimmune). PCP says oh it's MRSA as well as infectious disease specialist. Don't know which way to turn. Oh and migraine was my own fault. Was outside for a long period of time without fluid and was sweating like crazy.

Aug 05, 2015 8:51 PM

Bummer about skin allergy...I know all about that. How hard is it to get a diagnosis? It's so very frustrating... And I do feel for you. I have this skin condition that is a mystery to my Dr's too. I itch on both lower legs like I'm going to loose my mind...dermatologist says its contact dermatitis, family Dr says auto immune. Nothing they give me helps...so its up to me to figure it out.
They once told me my skin problem was mrsa but then after biopsy, they said no...I haven't read many posts...did you get a biopsy?

Aug 05, 2015 11:29 PM

Blessed, no. What they did was, I had a deep abscess that needed to be surgically opened because it was really inflammed and painful. They actually took a culture of the wound drainage and that's how I got my diagnosis on that one. Also, come to find out that hidradenitis and MRSA Can co-exist together.

Aug 06, 2015 8:55 AM

Wow, does not sound fun. Sorry you are having so much pain! Keeping you in my prayers!
Just an FYI... My boys had a staph/mrsa infection several years back. After antibiotics made their overall health in jeopardy I did my own research and found that essential oil "thieves" cleared it up! I know you said you had skin sensitivity.... But just a thought for you!

Aug 06, 2015 2:05 PM

Blessed, I have to do the antibiotics. Nothing else works for me. IV antibiotics that is(daptomycin, newer cephalosporins, etc).

Aug 06, 2015 2:38 PM

Got cha....hope it all goes well for you!

Aug 06, 2015 5:53 PM

Oh for all hell to break loose, I've just sprained my freaking ankle about an hour or so ago. Just freaking lovely. It can't get any worse now.

Aug 06, 2015 6:12 PM

Oh no! Those are soooo painful! Ice, elevate and hydrocodone. I'm sorry!!

Aug 06, 2015 6:23 PM

It's okay, not a big deal. I'm quite used to it now. Elevate, ice, ibuprofen and stay in bed is how it goes tonight.

Aug 08, 2015 4:11 PM

Well, just gave in and sent in a request to be seen by the surgeon this week. Not getting any better but not bad enough to go to the ER. This is absolutely NUTS already!

Aug 08, 2015 5:03 PM

I'm so sorry your vacation turned out to be anything but for you. I hope the surgeon will be able to stop it before it spreads. And also that your ankle heals quickly. Take it easy and rest as much as possible. Hugs & prayers! 🙏🌼

Aug 08, 2015 5:09 PM

Flappys, ankle is much better, but then again, me and my clumsy self fell this morning on a hard concrete curb. Nothing broken, but hurts like the devil.

Aug 08, 2015 5:27 PM

On no! Well at least you weren't seriously injured! Be careful the next few days. 🙏🌼

Aug 08, 2015 7:10 PM

Just want to let you know I will be praying for you.

Aug 09, 2015 11:58 AM

Amanda, thinking of you and hoping that things are improving on your end. How is your ankle coming along? I'm sorry your vacation didn't work out so well. I'm sending you positive vibes and hugs to help you feel better.

Aug 09, 2015 12:08 PM

Ankle is better, but I took a pretty decent fall coming home on Saturday right on my bad knee. If no better by tomorrow night, going to urgent care. Could just be a bruised kneecap, but just want to be sure it's only that. Keeping it up, ice and ibuprofen right now. MRSA is not much better at this point. Emailed surgeons office yesterday evening, cause this is not good.

Aug 09, 2015 12:15 PM

My thoughts are with you Amanda. I hope that the MRSA does not become any worse. 💕

Aug 09, 2015 7:55 PM

Amanda, you so needed a long break from all this! I'm sorry your vacation got so messed up. I'm praying your kneecap is just bruised and that your surgeon can get this MRSA flare cleared up quickly. I hope you have a good night sleep as possible. 🙏🌼

Aug 10, 2015 8:49 AM

Flappys, it happens. It feels like it's just bruised and I have an appointment with surgeon tomorrow morning at 9:00 am est. I think I need a vacation from my vacation already. Sheesh!

Aug 11, 2015 9:07 AM

Okay, so caught it in time before it became cellulitis. Lanced open in the office, cleaned out, cultured, etc. Shew, not too bad this morning. Now to get the spots on my spine addressed with infectious disease. They haven't progressed into full fledged abscesses yet, and hopefully they stay that way.

Aug 11, 2015 11:33 AM

That's much better news than I thought... So glad for you!!! Keeping you in my prayers. 🙏🌼

Aug 11, 2015 11:39 AM

Flappys, me too. Shew! Glad that's over with. I think I actually stayed pretty calm during the process with that one. NO panic attacks!!!!

Aug 11, 2015 11:41 AM

Amanda, I am so pleased to hear that things went better than expected for you. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. {{hugs}}}

Aug 11, 2015 3:00 PM

Alwayz, prayers truly did get answered today. Got an emergency appointment with infectious disease specialist at 11:45 am. Hoping they can get me on some IV antibiotics and get this stuff finally under control for once.

Aug 11, 2015 3:14 PM

Awesome, Amanda!!! I'll keep
Checking in on your posts to see what happens. Best of luck, Hon, my fingers are crossed for you!💕

Aug 11, 2015 9:32 PM

Same here Amanda! So glad you're getting seen so quickly. 🙏🌼

Aug 11, 2015 11:03 PM

Yay! I've been thinking of you. I'm glad you are getting care Fast

Aug 12, 2015 9:23 AM

Just have to tell myself to lay it down and let it go. It's out of my hands at this point.

Aug 12, 2015 12:25 PM

Now just have to figure out how to keep this stupid IV cathater site dry for the next 4 days. Any ideas?

Aug 12, 2015 1:13 PM

Where exactly is it located? If on the arm or leg they make those plastic sleeves to use in the shower. I'd the site bigger than those face masks people wear to cut grass, the molded ones that are rounded like a molded bra cup? Maybe you could somehow place it over the iv site and use breathable gauze to wrap it in place. Oh yeah, you have to place air holes in the mask to allow air circulation. My idea sounds crazy but I'm out on a limb here... Lol. 🙏🌼

Aug 13, 2015 6:18 AM

My husband has mrsa and he uses antibacterial body wash, dial makes it. He gets flare ups maybe once or twice a year. Maybe that could help you. Much luck!!

Aug 13, 2015 8:45 AM

Noodles, thanks for that. Been doing that daily for many years. The only thing that really works is IV antibiotics at this point.

Aug 14, 2015 1:41 PM

Ok, so it appears that the antibiotics are doing their job at this point. No further breakouts at this point in time. Still have another 2 days of infusions left to do. IV site changed over this morning without issues(vein blown on other site yesterday). It's coming together. Maybe this is what my body really needed at this point. Hoping to stay out of the surgeons office for a LONG while now!!!!! YEEHAA!!!!!!

Aug 14, 2015 1:43 PM

Praying it will be so Amanda! 🙏🌼

Aug 14, 2015 6:00 PM

YAY!!! That's awesome news Amanda!!! I hope the news continues to be good!! ❤️🙏🏻😊

Aug 16, 2015 12:18 PM

So far so good. Finished last dose of IV antibiotics today. Still can't go back to work at this point. MRSA drainage=no work unfortunately. Hoping beyond hope we got it in time, but only time will tell.

Aug 16, 2015 12:33 PM

Amanda, I have my fingers crossed for you and am still praying that all goes well with you. I'm glad for you that the last bottle of IV antibiotics and that all of that crap is draining out of it. Better that it drains and gets the heck out of your body and that you get to feeling better. I'm so sorry that you have to suffer so. I'll continue to pray for you so that you have the love, blessings and support you need from all of us sending you gentle hugs and praying for you to continue to have a smooth and complete recovery. All the best, as always!!! Keep hanging in there. 💕🙏🏻🌻

Aug 16, 2015 6:46 PM

Alwayz, thank you so much for that wonderful affirmation. I'm so glad that I can come here and get the support and help that I need, even if people around me truly don't understand what it's like. You guys always do. Blessings.

Aug 16, 2015 6:49 PM

So happy you are doing much better Amanda! Praying you'll be back to work as soon as possible. (((Hugs))) 🙏🌼
