Painful touch

Oct 10, 2015 11:04 PM

So today my hubby and I were running errands. He reached out and grabbed my arm, I don't remember why, but suddenly it felt like he squeezed it in a vise grip and I flinched. Then later we were joking around and he poked my upper arm...OUCH!!!! 😨

I thought back to when I had an EMG earlier this year and they couldn't complete it because I was in tears from the pain it caused. I can barely shave my legs now because certain areas are more sensitive and it feels like a cut. Even when the dog jumped in my lap, if his claws scrape me, it feels like I got cut with a knife. I know fibro had tender points, but now both thighs and upper arms hurt, way more than it should, just to poke it. I well deeply bruised but worse.

Is this CRPS? Or what else could it be? 🙏🌼

Hi Flappylady, I'm not sure what crps is, but if it helps, there are so many times what the slightest touch makes me cringe or even nearly cry. I hate it! Especially when my hubby is now half afraid to reach out and touch me with any sort of loving caress. My kids look at me funny if I repell from a rub on the back that comes with the "How are you feeling mama?"
When I'm like this, the only thing that gives me any relief is a hot epsom bath. I go days without, taking showers, washing my hair or shaving my legs but if I can manage to get in that tub, it does help me. (My new best friends now are epsom salt and dry shampoo). Many days I might take two-three baths just to get relief if some amount and when we're like this, any amount of relief is welcomed. I hope this helps a little. I'm sorry you're is such pain dear. Prayers for answers and relief.

One of your medical conditions or medications could be causing the increase in sensitivity. I read an article awhile ago that said that while chronic pain sufferers have higher pain thresholds we also have heightened sensitivity to pain, itching, and hot/cold sensations.

There are also correlations between injuries to the back of the head where it connects to the neck (brain stem) and increased sensitivity to pain.

😕

Sleepingbeauty, Stroke touches or even hugs at the waist don't elicit pain. It's indented touches, like the gentle (playful) poke my hubby did, or when my dog jumped on me or accidentally scratches me that causes pain. Because of my anemia, he bruises me every time.

Amieleblanc, I've had several injuries to the back of my head in my lifetime, but nothing has shown on an MRI. Someone else, or maybe it was you, mentioned the heightened sensitivities before. That's likely more my cause than meds. I'm literally on one pain med (Tramadol), one muscle relaxer (Parafon Forte), one antidepressant & anxiety each, Plaquenil, and the rest are asthma and allergy meds. I've been on most for 10-20 years.

I see my doc this week so I'll mention these things to him. Thank you both! I oppose you have av blessed day. 🙏🌼

Oppose = hope.... Every time autocorrect changes it! I wish I could make it forget the word oppose!!! Lol

Sounds like Allodynia. Yes most with Crps have it but what are your other symptoms?

Nov 01, 2015 2:59 PM

Could be CRPS, or pretty much any other chronic illness, they all have that symptom as a possibility

Nov 01, 2015 4:15 PM

I have Sjogrens, fibro, hypothyroidism, migraines, cervicogenic headaches, DDD, TMJD, OA, pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic congestion syndrome, vein reflux in calf with edema, and so many others I can't think right now. But I don't know if any of these issues could cause the oversensitivity pain. It's primarily in my upper back, back of my upper arms and the lower legs. 🙏🌼

😔 so sorry. Hope you get to dr soon

Nov 01, 2015 5:11 PM

Flappsy I hate to here that you are going through this. I understand what you are going through. I have some of the same things going on with me and when I have mentioned it to my Dr they just blow me off. It hurts to be playfully poked by a loved one,or squeeze by my hubby. I have just laid it off on my Fibro., maybe it's something else going on. My dogs nearly kill me jumping up on me they leave bruises all over my legs and thighs. My old skin is so thin now it tears easily, so I have scabs all over my arms from the dogs scratching my arms.I'm not that old I guess it has to do with my health. I don't really know I am just 59 will be 60 in Feb. I am sending you prayers and lots of hugs.

It sounds a bit like sensory defensiveness, (tactile defensiveness) but not if you are bruising. I hope you can find out what it is.

Nov 01, 2015 8:08 PM

Flappy, I am sorry that this is happening to you. I have CRPS. It really hurts to touch that area and mine is wierd. The area changes color and looks bruised until the episode is over. That can take a few days to a week and a half but you know it is not a blood like bruise. I know it is my scar discoloring.

What you descibes is what my wife calls her Fibromyalgia and her trigger points. When I go to touch her sometimes, she jumps in pain. I will stand there and not understand what I have done because I touched her very softly. But maybe you are describing something else and I am not understanding. Whatever the case, I hope you find your answers you need because it is hard when we dont understand what is going on.

I'm bruising easily too. I thought about my fibro, but it's never hurt to simply poke or squeezed my arms before. It hurts worse than getting "frogged" by the biggest kid in school. I've even wondered if it is a sensory issues, where my body just thinks it's worse. My forearms don't hurt, just the upper arms. And it hurts to shave in sections of my legs. And heaven forbid if the dog jumped up and scratched me, it feels like a box cutter going through the box tape, quick and to the point! I've just about got him trained to not jump but sometimes he gets excited and forgets. Thank you all! Maybe my pain doc can answer why on the 16th. 🙏🌼

This is what CRPS does, I can't even have someone blow onto me with out a lot of pain. But you should definitely go to the doctors. Is there swelling? Dry skin, shiny skin? Those are Alps other indicators of crps

Nov 01, 2015 10:10 PM

Dry, itching, and yes to some shiny (rubbery) skin. I have an appt in December with my rheumy doc. There's a long list for her because she the only rheumy doc in this area. I'll mention it to her. Thanks! 🙏🌼

Check our rsdhope.org to learn more about it and compare your symptoms. I pray for you that it is not but instead something repairable.

Nov 02, 2015 7:09 AM

I'll check out the site. Thanks to all. To me, if I stroke two fingers down the arms it feels like touching my fibro spots on my lower back. Except that once my fingers are gone it leaves behind a sense of stinging or burning, for several minutes before it diminishes. 🙏🌼

Nov 02, 2015 7:30 AM

Flappsy.. The same thing happens to me. If you pinch my arm, it feels like someone stabbed me, if the dog scratches me, it also feels like a cut and pokes feel bad as well. My pain specialist told me that it was RSD. I've had it for years and hate it. There are times if I get an itch in my back and ask to have it scratched, I almost collapse because it feels like knives cutting down my back. I would definitely ask the doctor. I was online yesterday and I am going to speak to the doctor about Sjrogens. I have every symptom they describe on their website. Just what I want, another diagnosis. Sending you gentle {{{Hugs}}} and prayers that you get the answers you need. 💕🙏🏻🌻

Nov 02, 2015 8:11 PM

Omg, AlwayZ I borrowed my hubby's back scratcher just an hour ago, and was I ever sorry for using it...I literally thought I had a fork scraping my back! I see my pain specialist in 2 weeks so I'll ask him then. As for another diagnosis... Ain't it the life! Hugs and prayers for you too. If you do have Sjogrens and they start you on Plaquenil, I our it gives you as good results as I have. Goodnifht & sweet teams to you and all my newfound friends! 💤🙏🌼

Nov 03, 2015 12:46 AM

I have fibromyalgia and suffer from the same problem but it's not all the time, I never know when I'm going to feel like that.

Nov 03, 2015 4:14 PM

I plan to ask my pain specialist in 2 weeks. I've had fibro since 07-08, but I've just developed these sensations of pain.

Nov 03, 2015 6:20 PM

Flappys where in USA are you? You mentioned mayo in a post. I am Arizona

Nov 03, 2015 8:35 PM

Georgia. I saw a news magazine article today that listed Mayo (AZ & MN) among the top 50 hospitals nationwide. Mayo in FL wasn't on the list.

Nov 04, 2015 6:41 PM

Mayo Az is great but not for CRPS. We have a handful here that are really the best in the nation about Crps. One is doing the neridronate infusion study.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's like my skin is just a onion skin layer over massively traumatized bruises. There's no discoloration just pain from touch. The only thing that changes is the intensity. On the worst days I can't even tolerate a blanket touching it. At best I can't handle an indented touch. Im so tired of hurting

Dec 15, 2015 1:56 PM

I'm the same. I am very sensitive to touch. Especially my arms and thighs. I cannot be touched not even lightly.

Dec 16, 2015 10:03 AM

I have crps and that is how it is for me every day to the pain and the sensitivity to anything that touches my leg or foot. And the swelling that it's causes as long with the discoloration in the foot. So hopefully you'll one day know exactly you have to get it taken care of and one day to be out if pain.
