Post op check up

Aug 31, 2016 1:31 PM

I went to my check up yesterday on my neck surgery. The fusion is healing nicely, and so is the incision. They removed the 2 stitches on the ends. I'm to return in 4 weeks.

Shockingly I was removed from constant wear of the neck brace. I'm to remove it multiple times throughout the day so my neck, shoulder, & chest/back muscles get use to supporting the weight of my head. My hubby asked about soft neck collar and they said no because it only delays my muscles getting strong again. When I go back they'll start me on PT if they think I need it. Yay... Less sweating & itching!

We discussed several things: (1) why is the area above the incision semi-numb with painful sensations going into my face, (2) foods & medicines sticking in my throat, (3) off balance more than usual since surgery...

Doc said ... (1) having cut through nerves going through the skin & into the face, sometimes patients will have weird or painful sensations, but it should eventually go away, (2) it is normal to have swallowing difficulties up to 6-12 months, due to them having to pull the trachea out of the way during surgery, (3) the area of surgery in the spine, C3-4, can be responsible for both gait & balance disturbances, and hopefully as my body heals these symptoms will fade; but because I was having gait and balance issues way before surgery I may have permanent damage that won't go away.

Well I guess time will tell on it all. Hugs love & prayers for all! 🙂💕🙏🌸

Glad you are healing well. It takes time for nerves to grow back and sometimes they never do. I still have numb spots from my back surgery in 1981! Also sometimes the nerves hurt when they wake back up not really sure why. Usually that is temporary. Physical therapy should help with your gait and of course strength. Take care of yourself!
