Potential employment

May 20, 2018 9:30 PM

I'm 19 and am wanting to find a part-time job.  The only options in my area are stores and factories.  I can't work in a factory because dust triggers my Asthma, so my only option is to work in a store.  I'm leaning towards being a part-time cashier with Walmart.  My mum who also has chronic pain currently works for Walmart, and has assured me that Walmart will accomodate my inability to lift over 20 lbs.

I have a few questions, but doubt anyone can help me:
1.  If anyone has been or is a cashier while living with chronic pain, what is some advice you can give about managing pain?

2. What length of shift and how many shifts per week do you guys think would be best?

3. How would you approach a potential employer about the whole chronic pain issue and need for accommodations?

4. How long would you guys suggest I try to hold onto the job before deciding if it's too much pain for my body to handle?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I can't advise about being a cashier I've never done it but I was completely honest with my employer and they have been very supportive. They have provided me with a specialist chair and moved my work station so I'm more comfortable. I think honesty is the best policy, most people are good and kind. Good luck with the job! Take care Hayley 🌈

One thing to ask for is a chair or stool.
