Rib /chest pain

Oct 25, 2015 3:24 AM

Hi. I'm new to this site. My name is Mary and I'm 32. I have been experiencing really bad rib/chest pain for nearly three months. The first time it happened I thought I was having a heart attack. I was rushed in to a&e but they couldn't find a reason for the pain and shortness of breath and said it was most likely a virus. I have pain and shortness of breath everyday. Some days the pain is excruciating and leaves me in tears. I haven't slept more then 2 hours at a time, some nights not sleeping at all. I'm living on painkillers. I had my hospital appt last Tuesday and I have to wait for appts for 24hr ecg and stress tests. My next appt with doctor will be in Jan. So fed up. The pain is really getting me down and I feel the tests that I'm having done aren't going to show anything as I don't think my heart is the problem :(

Marymary83, first I would like to welcome you to our community family. This is a wonderful place to come and seek information, a shoulder to cry on or an ear to bend. There are no judgements here as we all suffer with chronic pain and understand. I have chest and rub pain as well. I had my heart checked and all was fine. Turned out I have Costochondritis which is a problem where the pain is from the sternum into the ligaments that fill in the spaces between your ribs. It's a really uncomfortable pain that will sometimes feel like you are having a heart attack. It is scary but they had to rule out certain conditions before they were able to give me a proper diagnosis. I wish that the doctor is able to confirm for you what is causing the pain in your chest. If there was definite diagnosis, you would get better rest and would probably be able deal better. I hope that in going forward, you are able to cope with what is happening better. Sending well wishes and gentle {{{Hugs}}} and my prayers that you are able rest and feel betterπŸ’•πŸŒ»πŸ™πŸ»

Welcome to our family Marymary83! I also have Costochondritis. My pain is more under the breasts and wraps around to my sides under my arms. I've got normal EKG readings but had further tests, and I've got angina and mitral valve prolapse. And I have asthma. I sometimes lose my breath, especially if I'm having spasms of the rib muscles, or angina. When it happens I try to stay calm or I start hyperventilating. When it's just pain I try gentle massages. Hugs & prayers you'll feel better spoon! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Thank you. Had a bad few days. Tried the massages which hurt like hell but did help overall. Im trying to cut down in painkillers as taking far too many. Got my appt through for ecg ultrasound and stress test for the 21st Dec.
Hugs to you all too :))

I agree, that massaging hurts very badly when I'm doing it, but it does seem to help in the long run. My worst area is right under my armpits on my sides. Keep us posted. Hugs & a prayer! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Hi, I'm also new to this site. Since January I've also been suffering with upper chest pain that at times leaves me breathless and I'm always sore to be touched in that region. I also thought it was my heart as I was always breathless and can't breath at times. After so many trips to emergency and doctors telling me it's not my heart I've finally after so many months have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and costroconditis which explains the pain that I get. I'm always fatigued but now I know what it is and that I'm not dying I sleep better at night without going through Anziety that keeps me awake. I did have to go through months of heartache and pain, Anziety to finally understand my problem and except it. Knowledge is power and when you get answers you then made changes in your life that helps you to deal with it.
All the best with your tests

Thank you. Definitely not knowing adds to the problem.
Had a really bad night. So sleep at continous pain dispite painkillers. Went to the doctors and burst in to tears. She was absolutely lovely and fie the first time in 3 months I felt that someone actually cared and didn't fob me off. She's given me
Amitriptyline to take at night. So fingers crossed I can get some sleep and relief from it.
