My GP diagnosed Costcochrronditis a number of years back but told me at my last appt that my rib pain isn't presenting as Costco. It was a horrible appt and after close to 30 years going to him I am looking for a new GP. I have been able to get relief from it in the past with ibuprophen but can't take that now due to Barrett's esophagus. I have pain in the ribs all the way around to my back during the night and wake in the am with terrible pain. It has been flared up for around 3 months now and I can't figure out how to sleep to help. I have a 12" temperpedic mattress with a wonderfill topper and am going to get a down topper to try on top of that now.
Hi all. My mom has costochondritis also. I apply kiniseology tape on the most painful area and she says it lessens the pain. Maybe this is something you can try. I order it on Amazon although I now see it in Target and some drugstores as it's more popular now. Just an idea.
Costcochrronditis is inflammation of the connective tissue of the breastbone where the ribs attach. Often the pain radiates to the rest of the ribcage and can be excruciating. Ibuprophen on a regimen will help lower the inflammation.
I hope I'm not jinxing Myself here but my Costco has stuck with me for around 3 months. It has been horrible, I was dreading going to sleep at night knowing no matter where I was sleeping, (bed, couch, recliner) I would be waking in pain. I have a 12 temperpedic mattress. I bought a nice mattress topper in December $70.00. I thought it helped at first but after two nights I was right back to where I was with even a wrinkle in the sheet making me feel like I was laying on a rock in my ribs. 6 days ago I bought another topper, this time a synthetic down $115.00. So far so good I have had 5 nights without waking up during the night or in the morning in pain from the Costcochrronditis. My back is hurting worse than usual but I'm hoping to find the right position to sleep in to help my back. Right now, I'm just happy the Costco is relieved.
That's good Oregonhomestead. We bought a Mattress by www.HealthCaremattress.com. about 2 yr ago. We just replaced our guestroom mattress with the same kind. They're a type of memory foam, and they sell accessories.
I just spent $2,500 for a recliner that is custom made based on your height, weight and medical conditions. It should be here within the next 2 weeks and I'm praying it helps. It has built in heat and massage, independent back and leg controls and it goes totally flat like a bed in what is called "zero gravity" and supposedly, there is no pressure or stress on your body or organs. I'll let you know if it works. It made me sick to spend that kind of money (which I don't have to spare) on something that I can only pray will work. Fingers crossed..
For sure let us know how the zero gravity does for you! I bought a Lomi Lomi Massaging Chair and I love it! However I'm afraid to sleep in it because I don't want to damage it rolling around in it. I move erratically during the night due to trying to find comfort.
For anyone with rib pain that wraps around one side from the spine, you might want to look into Post-Herpetic Neuralgia. This comes from having had Chicken Pox in your early life. The virus lives in the spinal nerve, and the disease may recur later in the form of Shingles. If not treated promptly with antiviral meds, you are likely to end up with Chronic Pain that can last for years and even a lifetime.
I was not aware that I had Shingles 15 years ago, because I was among the 15-20% who are unable to see the lesions on the skin. I had the "Prodromal" version of Shingles and have had terrible rib pain on the left side which radiates from the damaged spinal nerve. I am in pain all the time, day and night and my sleep has been seriously affected since this condition began in 1999. Finding a position to sleep is very difficult. The ribs feel like they are being pushed outward and I have a strong need to put a lot of reverse pressure on them. My thoracic spine is over reactive, especially when my work requires bending over. It also burns and aches and make it difficult to sit for more than ten minutes. Sometimes it itches. There are a few numb areas. Other times it just feels very tired and I need to rest my spine. The rib cage has areas that feel like a knife is cutting it just from a light touch.
This is a very difficult disease to manage. I have been through the works. I have also read many research articles about the condition and ways to manage the life that results.
Victoria, I have very similar rib pains as you. My sister had chicken pox when she was little, but I didn't. So, I don't think my pain is related to shingles. But what you said about nerve damage in the spine resonated. I already have issues in my neck and lower back, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the middle was impacted too.
FlappsyLady, I'm sorry I'm late with my reply. I found the ad, believe it or not in TV Guide!! The company is called FirstSTREET For Boomers and Beyond and the number is (877)815-8392. It takes 4-6 weeks to get because they make them according to your height, weight and medical issues. The massage doesn't have rollers and you can control the intensity of the massage itself. I don't move a lot because I'm used to sleeping in a recliner but this one goes flat like a bed so we'll see. Check it out online, I think they have a website.
That sounds amazing! So it is so specific it would make buying one used not the best idea right? I wonder if the doctor writes a prescription for one if you could at least use it for your taxes? Or would insurance pay for all or part of it?
You know, Oregon, I didn't even think about checking with the doctor and insurance company to see if they would cover some of the cost. I'm going to check because my plan covers DME (Durable Medical Equipment). So, they would cover part or all of the cost of a hospital bed, so why not this? As far as buying one used, it may work for you but not necessarily as well as one made for you. I can't wait to get it... I'll definitely give a full report of how it is. Thanks for the idea!! 😃
For sure! If your doc or one of your docs is willing to write at least a recommendation for one it just may work! I would search online for a video showing one in use and explaining the benefits and show it to the doc. I know I have seen the lomi chairs on YouTube.
Oregon, that is a perfect idea... Thanks so much!! I got a call this morning that it is being delivered Friday si I will be able to let you all know Saturday if it is all it's cracked up to be. I'm praying it is because I sure am exhausted.
