Severe pain in ribs

Feb 28, 2015 9:55 AM

I woke this am with horrible pain in my ribs on the left side. I don't think it's the Costcochrronditis this time. It seems almost like its spasming. I can't afford a trip to the ER yet it feels like I should go. It's at a constant level with intermittent severe jabs.

Any idea?

Oregon, is there any urgent care facilities close by? It does sound like you need to be seen. The reason I say urgent care is that sometimes the fee is less. Have you tried a really hot bath?

Oregon I agree with Amanda if there is a urgent care you should go. It could be your Appendix. It's better to find out now than to wait. Be praying for you good luck.

If you need to go to the ER go. They will take payments even if it is $5/mo... If you are low income you can sometimes apply for them to write off the fees. I have done it before when I had no insurance. Bottom line is if you need to go... Go!

Now I take that back. Full blown esophageal spasm. Aaaahhhflac

If that's what I think it is, quack quack! Lol. On a serious note... I had an episode about 2 months ago where I was having sharp stabbing pain at the bottom and behind the lowest ribs on the left side. I suffered 2 days before it got so bad I went to the urgent care. They did an xray and made me call my husband to drive me to the ER, because I refused to go by ambulance (last ambulance ride cost me $800). They suspected a blocked bowel. Went to the Er and due to seriousness a blocked bowel can be they rushed me through. They ran all the tests and sent me home with 3 IBS meds, for backed up but not blocked stool. The next week my GI doctor put me on Linzess.

Another possibility if its the left is pancreatic attack. The appendix usually hurts in the center or right, but its possible too. Don't put off going if you aren't sure. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks y'all... I'm just riding it out right now. I go into hellapanic with esophageal spasms

Oregon, I understand exactly how you feel. I've been having horrible pain in my ribcage and its on the left side. Your appendix is on the right side and pain from that would be on the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Pancreatic pain usually presents with pain under the ribcage and straight through to the back. Gallbladder pain is usually across the abdomen, just under the ribcage and wraps around to the back and up under the right shoulder blade. I hope you feel better fast. Please don't take any chances if you're not sure. Best of luck.

Much better this am! I slept kinda rolled over a huge pile of pillows. Esophageal spasms subsided and I took Tizanidine hoping that would help

Glad to hear Oregon!!! I'm having a really hard time. I just want to sob. The rib pain is better but the rest is over the top. I just wish I could escape the pain, even if only for an hour. After 22 years, I don't remember what not having pain feels like. I know I'm not alone, guess I'm feeling sorry for myself and need to get over myself and snap out of it. Hope you have a peaceful day, Oregon.

I hope you are OK. I had gall bladder problems and it was as always in pain said I had severe pain in am upper abdomen that spread from centre to right and then around to my back up my right ribcage. I was also sick. It lasted for hours easing on and off and I was sick also. I was fine the next day and then had another on the Sunday. I had an ambulance ride and a nice stay in hosi as I had an infection in my gallbladder as well as other problems but I was told the infection could have spread to the blood so very dangerous.

The point of me telling you this is if you think your pain is out of the ordinary and it comes back please please seek medical assistance of some sort the cost is nothing if waiting could lead to something much more serious. Even if you just get an opinion from your gp first. If I had waited I would have risked being even more seriously I'll and due to the infection my blood count went down so I needed blood transfusions. I am glad I went when I did even though I ummed and arrred I ended up ill enough without waiting longer. I don't mean to scare you but it scared me as I am only just learning my pains I was unsure the pain was just a new fibro symptom but it wasn't.

Hope you are feeling better though and it doesn't come back xxxx

Thanks for asking about me...I really appreciate that you care. I went to pain management this morning and found out that due to health reasons, he is ending his practice as of today!!! I was totally devastated. I've been seeing him for almost 20 years and he is like family. There are not many doctors out there like him. He has a doc taking over that I am optimistic about. I have enough faith in him to know he would not put his patient's well being in the hands of someone who isn't top notch. Meanwhile, my levels were already horrendous and then I got a migraine from crying and when I left his office, my truck wouldn't start!!! (Oh yeah, I had to shovel out this morning before the doctor because we got 9 inches of snow!!) went to the pharmacy, came home and am miserable. The pain is making me have severe nausea. Sometimes I wonder why this has all happened to me but that is really a selfish thought because so many of you are suffering. I guess I'm just overwhelmed. So, thanks for asking about me... I pray that you all are having a light pain day and it's peaceful. You're all in my thoughts and prayers and I'm sorry I got off on a tangent. 💕

AlwayZ, I'm so sorry you've had a rough day. Its always awful losing a good doctor. I hope you can rest and get rid of your headache.

They did a story on the weather channel about how much snow weighs and what shoveling it compares to. Omg! I'd fall dead from either a heart attack or exhaustion because I'd only to be able to shovel out using a sand-bucket shovel (can't lift more than 10 lb, literally)! Lol

Well, unfortunately, my Dad is 85, my Mom is 79 (but very healthy) But I would never let them go out and shovel. My younger sister was out doing the walkway but I had to do my truck and the area around it and I was crying after the third swipe trying to get the snow off my windshield. The headache lasted the entire day and I still have it today along with neck, shoulder and back pain and my ear is killing me (and is ringing incessently) because my jaw was clenched the entire time from cold and pain. I thought for sure I'd sleep last night because it all took the ever lovin' juice right out of me but it didn't happen. The ONLY good thing about not working is that I can nap whenever my body has had enough and decides it's time to nod out. Thanks for your words, FlappsyLady, you are always so kind.
