Shoulder pain - muscle damage

Aug 06, 2015 1:38 PM

Hello, I'm 25 average weight for my 5.6 frame.
Since may I have suffered from muscle knots in my shoulder/back/shoulder blade region....these knots hurt for abit but would go away after couple of days and if not I would get someone to massage them out or least try to.
Since May they have progressively gotten worse, to the point where some days I struggle to get dressed as I can't lift my arm or I can't do my job as a veterinary nurse.
I've started seeing a physio and she said my right shoulder is slightly lower than my left, been given exercises to do at home to help with pain and strength my muscle. The reason my knots won't disappear is because I have weakened the muscle in that area which is why my shoulder is lower than my other, this has been caused from lifting heavy patients at work etc.
I used to lift around 15kgs at work with no issues since the pain has gotten worse and my injury since July I can barely lift 6kg, and I can't handle wriggly patients as I don't have the strength.

I'm on paracetamol 500mg 2 tablets every 4hrs and Dicloflex (diclofenac sodium) 50mg 1 tablet 3 times a day. I used a heat pack when I can at work and a Tens machine.

My physio did the rough approach to me but this caused one of the knots in my neck to get much larger, it went down eventually but I was in so much pain...4 days post physio session.
Since then I've been having gentle approach of acupuncture.

Has anyone got any other tips to help with pain or exercises to help with pain.

Some days the pain is horrific and I could just cry. I'm normally just a bright and happy person but since my injury I have lost my spark completely...really gets me down especially as I'm limited to what I can do plus the pain is exhausting some days 😓

Vetnurse25, first I would like to welcome you to our community family. I know what you are going through because I have the same situation. When I was in my early 20's I was having knots under my shoulder blade and in my neck, etc. it would come and go and then it just came and NEVER left. Now, it turned out that I had to have a nerve conduction study done and I have Long Thoracic Nerve Palsy. It was preventing the muscle from tightening up to hold my shoulder blade in. I had a major surgery to hold the shoulder in which failed. However, over the years my shoulder hangs down about 3-4inches lower than the other one. I've had all kind of physical therapy to no avail. I have since been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, CRPS, Degenerative Joint and Disc Disease among several other auto-immune diseases that have left me disabled and with chronic pain. I know that with help you may have success in building that muscle so that your shoulder doesn't hang down. I am sure there are many other people in this wonderful community that may have some tips and suggestions for you. I pray that you find relief. It seems that it could be something that will be manageable for you with physio, light meds and perhaps a TENS Unit and being careful how much weight you lift. Try to use compresses when you can and perhaps a soak in a warm bath in the evening to help unwind and get the knots to release some. I wish the very best for you. Good Luck!! 💕😍🌻

Hi and welcome to the group. I posted a reply a few months ago about an exercise that helps my shoulders release the knots. The topic was: knackered and it may have been started by harris. I have written it out 3 different times, sorry but it is long especially to retype on a phone. Hope it helps you.

I've been getting a lot of pain below my left shoulder blade....hmmm....maybe I'm having the same issue. What can I tell my dr to give me diagnose there? I'm still awaiting my appointment for my MRI before I can see my specialist again

Vetnurse25, welcome to the community! I get these lumps too, mostly on the backside of my right shoulder collar bone and going down to the scapula. The docs blow it off and give me muscle relaxers. I have my hubby massage voltaren gel in and use ice packs. I hope you can begin to get better relief and strengthen your arm very soon. 🙏🌼

Alwaysz- I'm sorry about your condition. I hope that mine won't turn into yours...I love my job I don't want to have to stop doing what I love...or even worse become disabled because of it 😥
I hope you eventually find comfort.

Thank you all for the welcome.
LMB- thank you I will try find this 😊
Octobot- my advice would be see a physio I never saw my GP because I knew they wouldn't help me and I knew my NHS waiting line would be too long. I'm only going GP now for my medication, and even that they aren't very helpful for me. 😓

Flappy lady - my pain in same place except for collar bone.
I haven't been giving muscle relaxant which is annoying as I feel I need that!
Massage hurts a lot but they never release and if they do there back the next day.
I have a tennis ball to rub up and down on a wall with this helps a lot!
I've tried volterol today though already on active ingredient orally GP said I'd be fine. Now on a codeine based product which I'm sure won't agree me as co-codamol doesn't....already making me feel nauseous.
I find heat is better for me than ice.
Today been off sick because pain was so bad causes from yesterday's busy shift at work, my colleagues at work said I should take sick leave for a week see if this helps improve me quicker...downside limited pay 😓
Trying to not stress as it will make me tense just difficult x

Aug 07, 2015 1:55 PM

It's a very wise idea to take a week off if you can afford it. Money can be earns later and without good health, matters will become bad to worse. If after a week u and you are unable to recover, means that there is something wrong and you must have it diagnose sooner than later. I'm sure many of us know that there's something wrong but the doctors won't diagnose anything till you repeated annoy them. Mine took about 6 months before they had taken any steps to diagnose me. I myself when to get an MRI done. Cost me a lot but hey, if they aren't going to do it, I'll take matters into my own hands.

Good luck to you in whatever decision you make.

Aug 07, 2015 2:13 PM

Thank you. I know my diagnosis it's just hope If I can repair it through exercises at home and physio otherwise I don't know what to do.
They said it could take a year to repair x

Aug 07, 2015 2:20 PM

Vet, I've been trying to repair it for the last 4 years, some people here had it for more than 10 years. Unless you can really take time off, do intense physio and hydrotherapy. Helped me heaps. I stopped limping, I stopped losing muscle mass on the left side and learnt to live with pain and still manage to somewhat work. I delegate my jobs to people under me and I'm lucky as they've all assisted in putting me up on my feet. Sometimes we need to accept that pain may be with us forever, that way you will be grateful on your good days and not take good days for granted.

Aug 07, 2015 8:42 PM

Vetnurse25, do you work at a place you can put in for a "leave of absence?" By law your job is held for 12 weeks. But if you don't return they don't guaranteed your position and may offer to place you elsewhere. Some places value their employees so much they hold their post regardless of time. 🙏🌼

Aug 09, 2015 4:47 AM

I've got a sick note to start tomorrow, I'll be on sick leave for a week. I hope it makes all the difference.
I didn't want to because I'll be on reduced pay and I don't earn enough as it is but I have to think of my health x

Aug 09, 2015 11:55 AM

VetNurse25, you absolutely have to think of yourself.. If you get worse, you'll be of no help to anyone. I know it's hard with the increase in bills and prices going sky high, it's stressful at the very least. I hope the week off helps you to find some relief and let's you get back to the work you love to do!! 💕🙏🏻🌻

Aug 09, 2015 8:18 PM

Vet nurse Welcome to our family, I hope that you get to feeling better soon.

Aug 09, 2015 8:30 PM

Hey Weezie! I hope you're doing well! I haven't seen you posting much. How is the grand baby? Hugs, & prayers still going for the family. Sweet dreams friend 🙏🌼

Aug 10, 2015 5:16 PM

Thanks for support!
Already bored out my mind on sick and it's only day 1 but oh well it has to be done.
Saw physio today, she crack my back and dos more acupuncture in my back and some in my neck as I responsed so well to previously treatment in my neck.
Been giving more physio exercises.
Physio is also going to right to my dr to be referred for NHS MRI encase something else going on but also for NHS physio as I can't afford private all the time.

Let's hope the doctors will believe me more when they read her letter tomorrow!

Sometimes I feel I'm losing a battle with the Drs, not willing to see me and it's clear they don't really believe me! But I must keep fighting and staying positive xx

Aug 10, 2015 10:29 PM

It's true, it becomes very difficult when doctors won't see you and they don't believe that you have the pain that you're complaining about. There are times I have gone to the doctor totally disheveled so they would see how shitty I felt. I found that if I went there freshly showered and my hair done and dressed nicely, the more they felt that I couldn't possibly feel that badly. It's hard what we have to do to get help for something that is legitimately a daily struggle to function.

Aug 11, 2015 8:15 AM

I was thinking that, go in jogging bottoms, lose fitted top so show the struggle to get clothes on some days. It's just not me, I don't go out in jogging bottoms and I always like to appear decent looking.

I was strapped up for second time by the physio but this time I've developed allergic reaction to the tape which is annoying as it really helping me today.
I've cut away the bits that have itched me and I have blisters but kept remainder on hoping i won't be allergic elsewhere. So annoying I'm allergic this time! 😣😁😠

I woke up feeling so much better today and having some hope, just have to hope I don't continue to be allergic to the tape! 🙏🏼

Aug 11, 2015 8:51 AM

Hang on to that hope and here's to you not being allergic anywhere else to your strappings

Aug 11, 2015 11:15 AM

Vetnurse25, I'm very sensitive to any adhesives and have to have the ace type wraps over the gauze when they take my blood. I blistered and peeled like a sunburn with nitro patches. I hope you won't develop any worse, because it is a pain having med treatments when you are! 🙏🌼

Aug 12, 2015 5:24 AM

Thanks everyone, luckily no further blisters will retry tape again another time...I have some I bought so fingers crossed.
The blisters that didn't pop have gone down and no redness now.

Got to ring at 1pm Drs to again try get an appt for Friday! Ridiculous!! I have many questions I need to ask plus I need a med review. I go on holiday a week today so I need to make sure I have the right amount of medication to get me by. #frustration!

Aug 12, 2015 8:47 AM

Vetnurse25, I wish you the best in your quest. I hope you get what you need from the doctor. I'm glad your blisters are better and no longer red. I hope most of all, you enjoy with all of your heart and soul when you go on holiday!!💕
