Sleeping ... too good to be true I guess

Jun 24, 2016 5:20 PM

I don't know why but ever since my hernia/esophagus surgery 5 weeks ago I've been having sleeping issues, and it's getting worse. I either wake from pain to change positions, out to port, then it's bye-bye sleep. Prior to that I'd been sleeping pretty well for the past year, with only occasional issues a month. I guess it wasn't meant to last. *Sigh

I either can't fall asleep for 2 hours after going to bed, or I wake up between 2-4 am and then can't fall back to sleep for several more hours, if I go back to sleep at all. The first few times I thought it was the stomach pain when I moved. Now following my knee injury it's worsened even more. I've not slept good a single night in over a month. I'm so tired, and the melatonin not Tranxene are helping. 😞 πŸ˜΄πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

So sorry to hear. Hope you feel better soon so you can get some sleep. What about trying pain meds when you wake up or before you go to sleep?

Jun 24, 2016 6:27 PM

I have allergies & adverse reactions to so many pain meds. It makes me leery of using what few pain meds I can use to help me sleep. But you're probably right, that I should use it. After all, if my body's trying to heal from surgery & a knee injury the added stress of not sleeping probably isn't good for me. Boy do I feel like a dummy right now, reading own post! I'll blame fibro fog 😢 & painsomnia πŸ‘Ή... lol! Thanks for helping me think clearly Hopetobe! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

You are not a dummy! When we feel like crap our brains shut off and we forget the things we can do that might help a little. Lack of sleep only makes it worse.
I said yesterday to my boyfriend that i couldn't kick this headache I've had and he asked what I've done to try to fix it. I completely forgot (again) about my muscle stim tens machine combo, the muscle stim helps to release the muscles a bit and can sometimes calm the headache a little. And if it doesn't when it goes to tens it blocks some of the signals. I never remember to use it. He had to remind me of its existence.

I take trazadone at night to help me sleep. Mostly it helps, but sometimes it doesn't. I hope you get some rest soon. And you are not a dummy

Jun 24, 2016 7:08 PM

Yup, I know the feeling. I can use only Tylenol... and fentanyl patches...so yes. But its ok. When I get brain fog I forgot my number... how to tie my shoelaces.,, so you're doing great! I😊

Jun 24, 2016 7:24 PM

I'm hearing you Flappy. Play around with those meds and do some tweaking. I've had interrupted sleep for 2 years and I'm so over it. Last night I took a little extra Endep. I know I should be checking with the doc first but they aren't easily accessible to me. So I took a bit extra and later and I slept from 9.30 to 5.30 which is amazing. I woke up in pain and stiff as a board but I SLEPT and can cope with the pain flare...sort of LOL

Jun 25, 2016 12:41 AM

Even after taking one tramadol & 5mg melatonin I am laying in bed awake. Omg! What the heck has caused this sudden change in my sleep? I am not napping during the day at all. Ugh! Mr Sandman, please bring me some dreams...

Jun 25, 2016 12:58 AM

Can't sleep either here.... Try a mantra. Oohaahmoo. Repeat over and over in your head. My mom taught me that.

Jun 25, 2016 7:53 AM

Flappy, remember the more your stress , the less you sleep! You might have some other stuff going on that has tripped your trigger...so sweet friend... breath, rest when you can, and remember this too shall pass.love, Terri

Jun 25, 2016 10:12 AM

I haven't slept good in a month. I've had a lot going on and all the stress has increased my pain so I know what my problem is but I am miserable. I have cut out my afternoon naps to try n help but it's not working. I take my pain meds right before I lay down so that I hopefully won't wake up hurting, doesn't usually work but it's always my plan. I need something to help me sleep!!!

Jun 25, 2016 3:30 PM

I never feel asleep until after 3 am and I was awake at 6 am. Terri it probably is some stress, from family mostly. But something connected to the surgery last month is at the core. I can't remember what they gave me for sedation, but when I woke my head was spinning like vertigo. I feel asleep a at home but then that night didn't sleep at all. That was the first issue/episode. I feel like something's been offset in my sleeping mechanism. Does that even make sense?

Jun 25, 2016 7:04 PM

Flappyslady81, I'm sorry to hear that! Sleep depravation has awful symptoms. I turned into someone I did not recognize and did not like when I went through that before. Add that to fibro fog and it's a mess. Do you have a doc who might suggest something on Monday? Any way to get physically worn out? Stress is a killer... so, no thinking or worrying. Right. Right?

Jun 25, 2016 8:28 PM

Autoimmunes, I don't have a doc to call Monday, since my PCP is on vacation. But I see the surgeon soon, and if I don't start getting rest I'll be talking to him. You're right about sleep deprivation causing problems, mood changes being only one. I get real cranky after so many nights of little to no sleep. Lol, my hubby avoid me! 😱 I'm going to take the melatonin tonight and relax before bed with music. Praying I get at least 5-6 good deep sleep tonight. I hope you & everyone else have a good night's rest too. Hugs & prayers! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Jun 25, 2016 8:31 PM

I hope you do Flappy! Good night

Jun 26, 2016 2:31 PM

Thanks CRPSsux! I did relaxation before bed and took pain med. I woke up every 2-3 hours, mostly from pain. But unlike previous night's I was able to relax my body and go back to sleep. So yay!!! Still tired today but it's better than the past 2 weeks. Only problem today is my SI joint on the right side seems to be aggravated, sending the shooting pain into the right hip and down the thigh. Took pain meds it was so bad. My hubby said my walk is off kilter, likely from the l leg splint on the left. One more day until I see the Ortho doc. Fingers crossed and praying I get out of this hard splint to at least a soft flexible one. And hopefully no surgery needed yet! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Jun 26, 2016 6:50 PM

YAY Flappy! That is awesome! I hope the Ortho has some good news for you tm! I didn't fall asleep until 3:30 this morning. I slept good once I did though. I go to the doc tm and am going to talk to him about some things. I wonder if my problem isn't the Lyrica I started 3 wks ago.

Jun 26, 2016 7:22 PM

I've never taken lyrics so I'm not familiar with the side effects. Hopefully you can get answers & solutions at your appt tomorrow too!

Jun 30, 2016 12:19 AM

Hey Flappy! What did the dr say?

Jun 30, 2016 12:24 PM

CRPSsux, he said it's grade 3 chondromalacia of the patella causing the knee pain. It's subluxating out of position, affecting the OA pain too. So I'm getting a brace today to wear. No surgery on the knee anytime soon; may be necessary in future if worsens. I see the spine Ortho today on my neck. Eek! 😬

Jul 26, 2016 3:25 PM

Hi Flappylady! Sorry I kinda disappeared. I've been having a very hard time. Anyway, how is the brace working for you? What did the Ortho say about your neck? I hope you're doing ok!

Jul 27, 2016 6:06 AM

Welcome back CRPSsux! The Ortho-Neurosurgeon said we have to focus on my neck right now. I'm actually having surgery on C3-4 on Aug 8th because the disc is slipping back into the spinal cord (retrolisthesis). They're removing & replacing the disc with donor bone...gross thought! 😲 Lol. The doc said I have 3 areas in my neck that must be dealt with first because of stenosis affecting the nerves. Luckily my back popped and the pain down my leg went away! I'm in a knee brace though, for grade 3 chondromalacia & OA. He said I'm too young for joint replacement; they prefer 60+ yr before replacing joints, because they only have a 12-15 yr lifespan. Yeah right! Lol. I had a good night's sleep last Sunday & Monday nights. But last night, not so much. I have 2 appts today for surgery clearance so I had to get up way earlier than usual, meaning I was restless, afraid of oversleeping. Somebody being me some toothpicks! 😁. How are you doing? Is everything going ok? I hope so!! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸŒΈπŸ™

Jul 27, 2016 6:25 AM

Good luck sweetpea... really thinking of u 🌷 ...ive had fusion at C3/C4/C5 with double diskectomy (sp) making swallowing/choking in style/or even talking sometimes difficult.
My Osteoarthritis & stenosis are crushing my oesophagus (from behind) onto my trachea.
Im sending u good karma, be strong... it truely sux sweetie but u will be ok. U r such an inspiration 🌷

Jul 27, 2016 12:52 PM

Thanks Lulabel. The doc has to remove the plate at C4-C7 (fused '92 & '95) and then fuse C3-4, and replace a plate with screws. I've been warned of the swallowing issues, but I've been having them for several years anyway. Sometimes when I get choked I think, "this is it! I'm going to die choking!" 😲 But eventually it passes and I get ok, except for the lingering sore throat afterwards. Then I think, "darn, why didn't I just choke to death!" πŸ˜‰ Just kidding...lol! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΈ

Jul 27, 2016 2:00 PM

I totally know what u mean! πŸ˜™

Jul 27, 2016 3:31 PM

OMG.. I just realized that since the doc said they want to do fusion on C3-C7 I could have that choking thing too!!😳 I am horrified by that because I've already had issues with reflux, aspirated and couldn't breathe. I ended up with aspiration pneumonia. I also hate to throw up and I know choking doesn't feel much better.😒

Jul 27, 2016 8:13 PM

AlwayZ, I've been choking on liquids & foods for over 3 years. I'm wondering if it's been the discs, and esophageal stricture (corrected in may) all along???

Jul 31, 2016 1:30 PM

It may very well be. Now that you have new information it could be the answer to that part of the puzzle. I just wish that you didn't have to go through that. πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»πŸ˜Š
