Son of a .......

Apr 16, 2015 11:31 AM

So apparently, my sessions of physical torture for my back injury ended up getting extended out for another week. I don't want to do this anymore. I'm tired of living with pain. My orthopedic surgeon is soon going to learn that I do have a mouth and I intend to use it next Friday. Really not happy at this point. I keep telling them therapy is not working and in fact it's making the issue worse.

Apr 16, 2015 1:12 PM

Oh Amanda that's bad to hear. What happened? The PT contacted the doc or the doc contacted them to extend the therapy? PT ends up making mine worse too, especially the headaches. PT usually still has the old fashioned mindset, "no pain, no gain." 🙏🌼

Apr 16, 2015 2:10 PM

FlappysLady, that's probably what ended up happening, I'm so bummed about it. I don't want to do this anymore cause it just hurts like crazy.

Apr 16, 2015 3:55 PM

I finally told my PT therapist it hurt too bad and I preffered to go back to my doctor; I wasn't going to do them anymore until the doc assured me no damage was occurring. I got to see my discharge papers later; they labelled me a noncompliant patient. The doc sent me to the pain doc. 🙏🌼

Apr 16, 2015 4:23 PM

FlappsyLady, I had someone put in my post surgical notes and P/T notes that I was a "non compliant" patient. I was going to a so called top notch physical therapy facility that my brothers and my younger sister had gone to and my orthopedic surgeon swore that they were the best to help me get motion back in my shoulder. When I would go in, they would sign me in, collect my money, then send me into the treatment area. They would take range of motion exercises to see my progress, then they would give me a massage, hook me up to the TENS Machine for about 15 minutes and then stretched me after that. They would take me to the machine they wanted me to use, tell me how many times to do the exercise and how many reps. THEN..... You got it, they would walk away and go sit somewhere, have coffee, whatever. Not standing around watching me and making sure I was doing them correctly. I kept on trying and the pain was so bad that it felt like it did before the surgery. I finally told them I was not coming back because I wasn't getting help and I wasn't being watched or helped with the technique using the machines. I also said I was going to go back to my Orthopedic Doctor and find out something else to do. I, too, saw the same exact thing put in my notes. It really pissed me off.
Amanda, I completely understand your frustrations... Perhaps if you go out in your yard, you'd be able to some of the gentler exercises at home. Don't overdo it, just do some gentle stretching, some of the other things they showed you but at YOUR pace and at YOUR intensity. I hope that you feel better soon and that you don't have to deal with all of this nightmare. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Apr 16, 2015 6:47 PM

Alwayz, your lucky you even got stretched. My orthopedic doc has told PT I am strictly hands off. No stretching, no range, no nothing. Core strengthening only. When I go back to see him again, I'm going to politely ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon. I'm not putting up with being jerked around anymore.

Apr 16, 2015 6:59 PM

Amanda,I hate to here you are having so much trouble with T/P. When I had to have T/P they would set me up and leave me with out supervision.

Apr 16, 2015 7:50 PM

Omg...Amanda, core strengthening is what they were having me do! Not only was it triggering bad headaches, but back pain too.

Apr 16, 2015 10:33 PM

FlappysLady, I absolutely abhore it at this point, but the left leg is getting stronger, not by much but at least a little bit. When I came home tonight, I had to take 2 Vicodin just to get the back pain/sciatica to stop which it did finally. Alwayz, I have found some gentle ones to do, just to get me through this few weeks. The sciatica just started again tonight for the first time, in several months.
I'm actually thinking about going to get an over-the-counter tens unit from Walmart this weekend as my doctor has given me no other guidance.
The only thing he could tell me was loose weight. I'm like, "wtf, I came here for help and I'm not getting it.
Looking at a second opinion with a neurosurgeon at this point. Will know more next Friday.

Apr 17, 2015 8:03 AM

Amanda, use an ice pack on the lumbosacral area to reduce swelling around the sciatic nerve. A TENS unit is a good idea too.

Apr 17, 2015 10:21 AM

FlappysLady, the weird part is with the sciatica, is it only comes down into my hip but no farther then that. Will definetly do the ice pack this morning. Nothing else that I can do other then wait. The kicker is that he's just calling this mechanical back pain at this point.

Apr 17, 2015 10:55 AM

OMG. Ladies, I am so sorry you are having these problems with p/t. I thought it was bad that they just put me on machines and left me on my own not even bothering to make sure that I was doing the thing the right way. I never, ever finished any of my p/t because I found it ineffective. Amanda... You definitely should ask the doctor to refer you to a neurosurgeon, You need to get additional workup and find out how they can help you. What a nightmare.... I will keep you in my prayers

Not to make light of the situation but if you need a laugh I referred to my therapist as The Physical Terrorist! I believe we can all relate. So sorry you are having to deal with this.

Apr 17, 2015 6:44 PM

LMB, I think I'll go with Physical terrorist. Last night was awful.Alwayz, if he will. He's kind of a jackass with ears.

Apr 18, 2015 4:51 PM

I'm so sorry many people have been mistreated by physical therapists.
It sounds like I'm lucky that mine is really friendly and helpful.
I'm happy that she has experience with CRPS in particular, I'm walking again!
She said it would be painful.
She also said that the inpatient program was for people who couldn't get through the physical therapy without someone there.
I'm hoping not to need it, so far so good.

Ferretbandit, that's wonderful! So very glad for you. 🙌🙏🌼

Apr 19, 2015 11:26 AM

I'm just waiting because as soon as my Niece graduates, she will be a licensed physical therapist. I will go to her and I know that she will take good care of me and do what she is supposed to do and make sure I am doing it correctly so I don't hurt myself. I always said when I was leaving the house, I'll see you later, I'm going to Physical Torture... LOL!!! It's sadly more often than not, true. Hope you all find the therapists that work best for you and have YOUR best interest at heart.

Apr 19, 2015 6:59 PM

Ferritbandit that is wonderful. Alwayz it's sad but true about them being Phisical Terriorist

Amandamiddleton - I've had back pain for over twenty years now, had all sorts of different therapy , some have helped short term, but nothing has lasted long. I've seen several doctors who have told me to lose weight, which has made me very angry and emotional. One of my meds puts weight on me, and exercise is a problem most of the time. I have managed to lose 19 lbs in weight and it's made no difference at all to my back problems. For the last three weeks I've been Almost bed bound (trapped nerves in upper and lowe back). The pains been so severe. All my doctor has done is give me diazepam, been on them two weeks now, and they ve not done much for the pain or getting me moving again which they would normally do after 3/4 days of taking them, all they've done is make me even more tired and given me more headaches. I'll probably have put some weight back on to. Not happy at all with docs or myself. I wish I could do more. It's really getting me down. Spend a lot of time crying because pain is so bad. But weight loss is not the answer, yes it made me feel better in myself, but it didn't make pain any better. Wishing you and everyone else luck and some pain relief.

Apr 22, 2015 10:56 AM

Lavinia, Nope, it's not made a bit of difference for me either. I can't currently take any pain meds because I've being hit with a stomach virus, so that makes things worse at this point and I don't have any energy to do anything other then either lay in the bed or in the bathtub. Hoping I can get some relief on Friday morning. Going back to the spinal specialist to see what he has to say. I hope he can refer me out to a neurosurgeon at this point since he's not helping me much at all.

Apr 22, 2015 12:48 PM

Hoping that it works out for you, Amanda. You also deserve to have some break with all the pain and craziness that you go through on a daily basis. I hope you have a great day. You will be in my prayers.

Apr 22, 2015 1:21 PM

Thanks Alwayz and yes, we have decided to move forward with corneal transplant for the left eye only.

Apr 22, 2015 6:19 PM

Wishing you the best Amanda! 🙏🌼

Apr 22, 2015 7:36 PM

Thanks FlappysLady, hoping it's a much better night tonight then the last 3 days or so.

Apr 23, 2015 10:04 PM

Amandamiddleton apple cider vinager ("with the mother") for the stomach virus, also ginger tea. If you know the hip back pain is sciatica (I only say if because I don't know your diagnosis details) mine doesn't always go down the leg either. When it gets past the pain med and the EO's that often help it I have a prescription for Diclophenac, not sure I spelled that rt, and that most often stops it. As a last resort a course of Predisone has fixed the worst bout, actually the first bout, I have ever had.

Do you ever feel like you're the person who matters the least in your own health care? I'm battling insurance right down to get surgery for a 90% tear in my shoulder rotator cuff & the remaining tendon is split up the middle. I so have bursitis and arthritis across my chest (from seatbelt) & insurance denied surgery based on the idea it was "elective" surgery. Why? Because I still have another arm?!

Apr 24, 2015 6:01 AM

Lymie, Yes it does feel like sciatica because it starts out at the bottom of my butt or along the side of my hip(depending on the day and time). My doc won't prescribe anything at this point. Also, prednisone and I do NOT get along. It makes me an evil cranky biatch when I take it. And my doc says this is just mechanical back pain at this point cause the MRI was hard to read(grainy).

Apr 24, 2015 8:17 AM

HopefullyHopeful1, I am so sorry you're battling the insurance. Its frustrating to say the least. I've battled with insurance several times. And I lost, simply because the doctor(s) would not redocument (amend) their statement for the need. And I had to pay $4000 for the tests. My advice is get an appointment (consult) with the doctor and explain what's going on and ask them if they think its elective. If they say no, ask them to document that and resubmit the request for surgery. If they refuse find a new doctor. But don't do surgery the insurance won't cover, unless you can afford to pay (which I'm sure you are like the rest of us, not able). Good luck & I'll be praying for you. 🙏🌼
