SOS! New Medication

Sep 13, 2017 7:34 PM

Hi everyone ❤️
Is anyone taking Gabapentin? I was prescribed it yesterday and started it this morning. 3 100mg caps in the morning and same at night. I didn't get much guidance about the medication and the internet only tells me how to abuse it with other meds. I am very nervous about taking new medication at night because I value my sleep (that I don't get often) very much. Can anyone tell me if they take gabapentin and ambien? I take ambien to sleep and I don't want to mix it if it'll make me sick. Suggestions?

Thank you!

Also update,
My neurologist wants me to have an EEG done to see if I could be having mild seizures in my sleep that is causing my spasms and muscle tightness. Still no explanation for my moderate herniations throughout my spine. Apparently I have the t spine of a 99 year old. Great!

I don't take ambien but I do take gabapentin. It makes me tired. I would ask ur doc if he thinks u need both. Your spine sounds awful. I have bone spurs and bulging discs in mine. It hurts!

I used to take gabapentin and ambien, for several years. I’d never do it again. It gave me crazy nightmares and I was super fatigued and groggy in the morning. Also, while on ambien, I did some pretty crazy and embarrassing things I couldn’t remember. My friend was on ambien and she got up in the middle of the night, took her car for a drive all over her neighbors lawns and totaled it. Too scary. I would never mix anything with Ambien.

I was just prescribed Gabapentin last month but my doctor said she wanted to ease me in so I have to take 100mg 3x a day. Then she will gradually up it, but I take one in the morning and 2 at night because they make me a little tired. I don't know how it mixes with ambien. I take remeron and seroquel at night and it hasn't bothered anything. Hope this helps your question some. HUGS💜

I took the 3 100mg gabapentin and 1/2 ambien. IM STILL AWAKE!! Ugh. Maybe I'm a little stressed because my neurologist thinks I may be getting night seizures. With the symptoms, it kind of makes sense. EEG scheduled for 10/16. None of it helps my white coat syndrome. I think I'm more petrified that something serious like seizures is happening but I will be too scared to do any treatment that involves needles or blood. I literally cannot do it. I wish I could be brave :(

Oh the gabapentin was prescribed for possible night seizures and not pain?

Sep 13, 2017 11:54 PM

Mainly prescribed for pain. I got norco too but of course that's as needed and I only like to use that for emergencies.

Not really a new drug it started being prescribed over 40 years ago. It is great for some but like everything not great for others.

I tried Gabapentin 300 mg 3 times/day for 4 months in 2014 for migraines. It caused horrible side effects and didn't help the migraines which ultimately led to me being taken off it. It causes impulsiveness, which when you already have ADHD, it turned everyday life from a struggle to hell. I was sleeping for 18 hours per day due to extreme tiredness. While I was on Gabapentin, I went from 178 lbs (80 kg) to 210 lbs (95 kg) due to increased appetite. It caused symptoms of my Restless Legs Syndrome to increase. Most frightening my blood pressure went from being low at 90/69 to being hypertensive at 140/90.

Neither worked for me, together or separate.

Did anyone experience any side effects such as memory issues?

Nov 26, 2017 11:24 AM

PainedSteph1990: I experienced some memory issues, but they were caused because the Gabapentin made me exhausted all the time. Memory problems are a known side effect of Gabapentin though.

Hi, I have been taking gabapentin with amitriptyline for about a year now I take all of mine at the end of the day as that help with sleep. I still don't sleep great but it's much better than when I wasn't taking it. You don't have to take them the way you are you can spread them throughout the day or take them all at night as they do make you tired / drowsy. I also get regular lidnicane drips. It is different for everyone you will just have to see what sticks and through different trial medications. Don't just rely on the medication though as you probably know there is no cure only things to take the edge of. Try and stay positive as much as you can and research and try different lifestyle changes. Good luck x

I'd suggest contacting your doctor or local pharmacy. They will be able to tell you if there are any interactions.

I had an allergic reaction to gabapentin and ended up in the ER because I couldn't see.

For sleep I take amitriptyline and Doxepin. It seems to help 2-3 out of a week.

Good luck

Ambien worked great for many years, until I got into a deep depression and all went to hell.. I was sleep eating, falling asleep in weird places, mailing letters I didn't know I wrote, then I sliced my brow open all in my sleep. I use to think sleep eating was a joke, but I can tell you it is Not. What was WORST then all of that???? Getting off of it!!! Couldn't give me a million dollars to try it again. Melatonin is much better.(natural..in a system already, feel like liquid better then pills.
Gabapintin found Top and it works great.

Hi..I was on gabapentin for neuropathic pain. 3x100mg a day. That was eventually upped to 1800mg a day. I had super brain fog and memory issues. My friends said my personality changed. Was tired all the time ...but I still am though. I stopped taking it at the same time I went off opioids in a room on my own for a week! (Yikes.NOT recommended!). If you’ve started Gabapentin you’ll know soon if it’s right for you or not. Just make sure that if you want to come off it, be advised how to come off it slowly...I wasn’t told this. (Same goes if anyone is trying to come off opioids!) Your neuroreceptors look for the drug once they expect to be ‘fed’, so do it slowly, so as to alleviate any unnecessary discomfort. I take Melatonin Compounding pharmacy drops for sleep ...when you suffer from Pain you don’t make as much melatonin. It does help. Good luck on the Gaba..I sure hope it really helps you, like it does others.
