Suggestions for getting swelling down in newly out of cast ankle

Mar 12, 2016 2:11 AM

Hi I just got out of my 3rd cast following a Triple Arthrodesis on my left foot. I am now the not so proud owner of 9 Titanium screws. Its been 9 weeks of non weight bearing and I cannot seem to get the swelling down. I tried ice but got very sharp pains I think cause the screws got cold. I am elevating it as much as I can. I just got out of the cast 2 days ago and I have open wounds on the top so no Epsom Salts. Anyone have any suggestions?

Krissie, first let me say l am sorry for your situation, I can't imagine what you have been through, however I do understand and live with chronic pain. The only thing I can think of is to elevate the leg above your heart and use cool (not cold) because the screws will get cold and cause pain. I have them in my thumb, my back and shoulder. Perhaps it's just a matter of having to wait it out because you've not been weight bearing yet and it could be a circulatory issue. So, once p/t starts, it may bring the swelling down. I wish you the best of everything and hope you heal quickly and completely. Sending {{{Hugs}}} and prayersπŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»πŸ˜Š

Have you tried to take an alive? Or maybe double up washcloth with ice? That way it's not directly on the skin to make the srews in the leg cold. The Doctors say 20 mins on 20 mins off. And the foot being propped up, it has to be either heart level or above the heart. I hope that helps! And if you find something else that does work let me know as I am having same issue with my daughter too, except we think it's broken. ER said it was a sprain but with all the swelling she had that day and still has no X-ray machine will be able to see through that mess, so her orthopedic doctor is going to order an MRI on Wednesday. Prayer's that something will work for the swelling! πŸ˜˜πŸ™

Krissie, I had foot surgery in 2007. My foot & ankle started swollen for 6-8 weeks. And once I was able to come out of the cast and start walking & standing it would still swell at the end of the day. What I had sounds easy compared to your situation. But with all the trauma your body has gone through you may be swollen for awhile yet. Elevation, rest & ice was my best methods for swelling. But I can't tolerate ice, so I use rice filled tube socks (or bread filled store kind) frozen. If I do use an ice pack I roll it in a hand towel, with at least 2 layers of cloth between me & the ice. I oppose & pray you will begin to heal quicker and with much less swelling. Hugs! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΌ
