Surgery Follow Up👍😊

Jun 09, 2016 1:24 PM

I had my follow up from the hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication surgery this morning. It went very well and he was pleased to hear how well I'm doing, in regards to low pain/discomfort & nausea. I've lost 16 pounds since May 17, and he wants me to stay on a soft food & low sugar diet another month. Woohoo at the benefit! The nurse had the same surgery and was shocked at how much I've lost. He checked the scars and said they're healing nicely but it will require several months for all the internal surgery to heal, so still no lifting and gentle moves; no stretches, weights, etc; only walking exercise. I can drive short distances, no long road trips. My hubby's been eating the same diet and he's lost 12 lb. His Pcp was glad as he was pushing the scale too high with cholesterol too. He did tell me no psyllium fiber, only soluble fiber for the IBS-C, and no staining, try to avoid constipation. Smoothies with low fat/low sugar yogurt & fruit is helping. He said no more psyllium because it requires a lot of water and if I don't get enough it will swell and block my intestines, causing worse constipation. I don't want that for sure! I go back in a month and see what else gets changed. I wish everyone a gold day, hopefully as pain free as possible. Hugs & prayers for all!! 🙂💕🙏🌼

So glad your surgery went well, flappyslady! I'm going to be looking for ways to lose weight with fibro and IBS-C. You're a good inspiration.

They instructed me to follow the sugar buster's diet, watching my sugar intake (no more than 3 g of sugar per meal). I knew nothing about it so I googled and found a lot of helpful info without having to buy a book. I was told to avoid all white carbs; breads, pasta, potatoes, etc. I purchased Peppridge Farm's Jewish Rye bread to replace my wheat bread (has white flour), but I had to toast it to eat it...taste & texture. They told me to eat lots of fruits & vegetables, fresh or frozen, but not frozen in syrup, and to make my meat or protein 2/3 of my meal. That was hard because I don't eat a lot of meat except seafood. I had to swap my Yogurts (Yoplait & Walmarts Great Value) for Dannon Light & Fit yogurt, due to sugar & carbs content. And I get to eat ice cream (my fave) by purchasing Bryers Carb Smart brand & limiting portion size. I sautee, grill, bake, and stir fry my veggies with olive oil & seasonings, plus raw veggies. I avoid fruit juices except my Low Acid OJ. No corn, raisins, bananas, or watermelon due to sugar content. There is a website that has a better list, and there's an app available in sure, like diabetics glycemic index. Doc told me to eat slowly and chew well, then chew again, to get use to feeling when my stomach is full. It was hard to get use to it all at first, but now it's like second nature almost. I use to eat poptarts or cereal for breakfast, but I feel better eating yogurt, or eggs, or a smoothie. I eat nuts like almonds & pistachios. I also drink 2-3 Atkins Protein shakes a day. It has the lowest sugar/carbs over all protein drinks, and they taste good. I eat 5 small meals every day and my calorie intake has dropped by 250-400 calories less a day. Portion size is also important, and I remember seeing that on a website somewhere. I'm walking at least 15-20 minutes a day, at least 4-5 days a week (treadmill slow pace due to hips & knees). Good luck!!! Hugs & prayers this can help you! 🙂💕🙏🌼

Thank you..it's frustrating to me because all you listed is what I'm doing already. Except I don't always eat as much as should each day. I drink the Atkins shakes I love them. Lots of salad and veggies and i excerise 30 Mina a day every day in some form . I don't use added salt and I use Greek yogurt. I'm gonna try to keep at it . Thanks again

You have to remember I had stomach surgery. Before surgery is easily eat 1400-1800 calories a day. Now I'm lucky to eat 800-900 due to my stomach filling up so easily... Reduced size surgically from the hernia and fundoplication (for Barrett's esophagus). If you eat like this already maybe your body has hit a plateau, where you either reduce more calories or exercise more.

Also, you have these tumors inside, multiple ones. When I had my one tumor removed in 2010, I immediately weighed 15 pounds less. That may be a very big cause for your weight. All you can do is the best you can and nothing more. Talk to your doctor about how much weight is possibly due to the tumors. Hugs & prayers! 🙂💕🙏🌼

You have a point. I've discussed it with my gyno and its estimated that I have about 100lbs worth of tumors give or take. It's just hard when nothing seems to go right. I'm kind of in a mental funk. Heck and physical one too..

Flappys, I know this is kind of off of the question at hand, but with the low acid OJ, do you still get IC symptoms or does that help to minimize it? I miss my OJ!!!

Jun 12, 2016 6:00 PM

Amanda, I'm actually not bothered by the OJ, but I never drink more than 4 oz a day. I haven't had any IC symptoms for awhile. I started retaining using several months back. After doing an ultrasound my Urology put me on AZO Bladder Control & Tamsulosin. Lol the last med is given to men for prostate issues. But it's worked for the Udine retention, and my IC has calmed down. I don't know if it's from one or both meds, but I'm thankful.

I had my first outing yesterday, since surgery. We rode to visit family, 45 min one way. It doesn't seem like that far away, but I've been hurting in my back & legs all day today. So I'm just resting.

I've between trying to eat softly cooked meats and other soft foods. Since yesterday I have had three episodes where food has felt lodged in my throat for several seconds to minutes, and I struggled to swallow enough water to force it down. After supper tonight I told my hubby I don't think I'm ready for more solid foods, especially meat. Well, back to my mostly liquids diet I guess... But hey, that means the scales will hopefully keep dropping! 😉 I hope everyone else is having a peaceful day! Hugs & prayers! 🙂💕🙏🌼

retaining using several... = resting urine
Udine = urine
between = been trying
