TMJ flare

Jul 21, 2015 2:18 PM

Got up yesterday with ear pain. Got up today with lower left jaw teeth hurting, along with the ear pain. I've used numbing ointment on my gums and teeth & voltaren gel on my left jaw. Nothing is helping this TMJ flare up. My left ear is hurting. My last 2 teeth hurt & throb. My jaw hurts with the lightest touch. I've tried everything but I've because I'm not tolerating cold right now. I don't know what else to try. 😒 Suggestions appreciated! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Oops... Glitch in system double posted. Ignore this one please!

Go to an Asian shop and see if you can get over the counter plasters, something with cooling effect. Stick it on the side of the jaw, you might look funny but boy it's worth it!

This plaster I get is called tokuhun, really amazing stuff. Almost instant relief!

Flappsy have you tried a warm rice pack yet, I am so sorry you are having TMJ pain today.will be praying for you. Oh yeah how is your tremors doing today?

Jul 21, 2015 9:55 PM

Thanks Octobot, I'll try to find some tomorrow. Weezie nothing is helping. At one time today I opened my mouth and my jaw stuck. It was painful but I finally got it to move. When I feel the two sides, the left feels different, like a portion nuts out of the face. I'm wondering if it's dislocated. But I don't know what type of dentist to see.

Jul 21, 2015 10:09 PM

You might wanna get an xray if you think it's dislocated. Also, a chiropractor can help realign it quickly and painlessly if it's not actually dislocated. Hope you find relief real soon! 🌻

Jul 21, 2015 10:22 PM

Thanks Faerygrl. I hadn't even considered a chiropractor. I've got to see someone tomorrow if I wake up like this, of it gets worse. πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Flappsy, I'm sorry you are having such an excruciating TMJ Flare. I know what they are like and I have to say that using a dry heat may help. Sometimes when nothing else does, the dry heat works better than moist heat. Also, try if you can, not to have to bend over for anything. I don't remember the acupressure point for the jaw... I'll look it up for you to perhaps offer another possibility to help you. I've been having a flare (whole body) since yesterday. I think that all the driving, in/out of the car, being on my feet for hours, walking and the emotional adore had all caught up with me. This morning I had to take my Mom for that 40 mile ride to get her teeth and thank God, they were perfect! Now we have another appointment next Tuesday just in case she finds any sharp spots or has any sores, etc. I can take her in to get them taken care of. This weather being horrible for the last week on top of everything else had just put the whole flare up over the top. (I'm sure it's not helping you or anyone else any either). I had pain management yesterday with range of motion measurements (which causes pain) along with taking my Dad on a 38 mile drive to the VA Hospital for his checkup and tomorrow I'm going to go see my Cousin that had the brain tumor and also had flatlined last week for 4 minutes and they don't know why. He's in rehab so I'm going to see him and make sure he's coming along the way he should be. I'm exhausted.
Hoping I sleep tonight. I keep dozing but that's about it, hence, why I'm here trying to catch up with everyone. In sorry I got off topic whilst trying to help you. Dry heat and acupressure points. I pray this has been helpful for you, Flappsy. All the best to you. Love and prayers. πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»

AlwayZ, I'm trying everything. It's only a tiny bit less painful today but still feels out of place when I open & close, but that could just be it's new position since the whole balk & socket joints are deteriorating.

I hope you get some rest and feel better. Very scary about your cousin! Glad your mom's teeth are good. Praying for strength to get through it all!πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Jul 23, 2015 10:13 AM

Thanks Flappsy. I pray that today has brought you a better day. Your always in my thoughts and prayers. Today is absolutely gorgeous and I'm going to go see my Cousin in rehab and see how he's coming along with his occupational therapy. It'll do me some good to get out. My Cousin also deals with pain so when we go back to her house it will be ok
If I lay on the recliner and close my eyes. She also has a built in pool. Maybe I'll go for a float (notice I didn't say swim...LOL).πŸ’•

Jul 23, 2015 1:54 PM

Thanks AlwayZ, the TMJ is much better today. It's gradually improving but I'm wearing the splint 24/7 as much as possible. Can't eat with it though. Go enjoy your cousins pool! It's overcast & thundering but I won't complain. I've been praying for rain because our grade is broken and leaves are dropping, and points needless are yellow.

Jul 23, 2015 2:47 PM

Oops... Our grass is brown... Pine needles are yellow πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Jul 23, 2015 2:49 PM

LOL!! It'll perk up no worries!! πŸ’•

Jul 23, 2015 2:57 PM

I don't know about that. But, hey if it dies we won't have to keep it cut! A large area around us has gotten lots of rain. But as the storms approach is directly, within 5 mile radius the storms split and go around us on both sides. We haven't had more than a sprinkle here and there for three weeks. I've never seen leaves turn fall colors and talk room trees in July!!! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Jul 23, 2015 3:18 PM

Wow, me neither!!! You're right though, if it dies, you won't have to keep it cut. Strange how the storms keep splitting and going around you. I guess those plants really need the rain. I know it's not good for your bones and pains but the plants will definitely look nice!! 😊

Jul 23, 2015 5:01 PM

It rained, and I mean poured about an hour ago... A solid 15-20 minutes. β˜”. Thank the Lord! All my birdbaths 🐦 are overflowing. My daughter said her duck is puddle hopping, he's so excited about the rain! Lol. The storm line now is splitting again, so we're probably done. But I'm thankful! πŸ™πŸŒΌ

Awesome... I'm sure all God's creatures and the flowers and trees are happy too!!! πŸ’•

Jan 26, 2016 3:43 PM

Tens machine on jaw & temple really helps my tmj pain in the morning. Use for 30 minutes

Jan 26, 2016 6:20 PM

Iamjaime, my therapist told me not to place the pads on my temples or over the carotid arteries, but didn't state why. I have TMJD & osteopenia, and both the joints and jaw bones are deteriorating at a fast rate. But my splint I wear at night has made a big difference over the past year. πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸŒΌπŸ’•

I have learned a lot from this post. Glad you are feeling somewhat better Flappys and great advice as always Alwayz! Hoping to try something out now. This is a wonderful community.πŸ’πŸŽ†πŸŒ»πŸŒΌπŸŒΊ

Equinesister, it's good to see you. You've been on my mind. How's you're foot and ankle doing?πŸ’•

Jan 27, 2016 9:02 AM

EquineSister, thank you. And yes, I'm feeling much better. I out a drop shot yesterday for my allergies/cold that won't go away. Needless to say I did not sleep well last night. But I can't nap today because I have an MRI on my knees (checking for tears). And I needed to go to bed early tonight because my daughter wants me to puppy sit tomorrow, and she's dropping him off early! I oppose you have a really good day, and everyone else too! πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸŒΌπŸ’•

My Dr said the bones healed solidly. I have 6-12 months of tissue healing. I have good days and bad days. I am driving short distances like an 8 mile radius. Yesterday I went to the grocery and accidentally hit the shopping cart on my bad foot when I was pulling it out. My first time out and i mess up. Now it is swollen and activated new pain. Sad story.

Jan 28, 2016 11:35 AM

Oh, That's aweful!! Something like that happens to me. I took a bad slip in the shower again today and I grabbed the railing and twisted the hell out of my back (which I hurt when I fell in my room last week) and pulled out my shoulder, elbow and wrist.. The pain is unbelievable. I hope that you iced as soon as you got home and that you feel better soon. I'm happy to hear that the doc said the bones have healed together properly. {{{Hugs}}} and prayers that you heal up quick. πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»πŸ˜Š

Jan 28, 2016 11:59 AM

I'm so sorry EquineSister! Have you tried to ice it, provided you can tolerate ice? Praying there is no damage to the wound and you heal quickly. Hugs! πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸŒΌπŸ’•

Jan 28, 2016 5:00 PM

Thanks Alwayz and Flappys. I am an elevator. So I just prop it up on a pillow I try to get it above the heart. I sleep with it elevated as well. I hope you two are getting through it. Grandma always said "You can't keep a good girl down." I feel that phrase applies to you two.

Jan 28, 2016 5:17 PM

I've just recently had the excruciating pain you describe. I found hot or warm drinks held in my mouth helped, along with codeine or morphine. Can you get either of those?

Jan 28, 2016 7:26 PM

Feduplass09, warm drinks do ease my discomfort too. As for costume & morphing, they are two of the long list of pain med allergies I have.

Thank you EquineSister! I like your Grandma's phrase. The same goes for you too, and many on this site. Hugs, love & prayers you'll have a restful night! πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸŒΌπŸ’•

Bugger :( I can't take NSAIDs as they suppress my respiration :(

Jan 29, 2016 11:08 PM

I have tmj problems. I have worn a mouth splint for most of my life. At 23 I got connected to a dentist specializing in tmj problems. I have my splints made by him. It is always checked for comfort and balance when I go for my cleanings and dental work. I grind my teeth, have been on much medication making my teeth prone to cracking. I have gold caps which I am told wear like real teeth. I do wear my splint during the day if my face is sore or am going to do something that will make me put pressure on my jaw. I always wear it at night.
Note: many medications can cause: dry mouth which puts us at increased risk for cavities or general deterioration of tooth health.

Jan 30, 2016 12:03 AM

Thanks for sharing Beets. I am going to make a dentist appt. I need something for the day use.

Jan 30, 2016 7:53 AM

Beetsrgood, I've worn splints since I got married at 20, and my hubby woke me up to tell me to stop grinding my teeth! Lol I called our dentist the next day. Now I'm 54, but my last splint was made by an orthodontist and it works much better. It's less bulky, made similar to invisalign, and I can wear it in there day if needed. He's the one who sent me to an oromaxillofacial surgeon, because he found the deterioration in the TM joints. Unfortunately I can have surgery because they don't think it would heal due to current bone loss and osteopenia. My new dentist informed me (2 wk ago) that my jaw line isn't only losing bone, it's crooked and deformed.

EquineSister, a splint really will help. But you may need a shot to calm things down if there is a lot of inflammation going on. Good luck and best wishes, with hugs, love, & prayers! πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸ’•πŸŒΌ

Jan 30, 2016 8:10 AM

I have TMJ with much deterioration of the jaw bone and mine is also becoming deformed. I have full dentures and STILL grind my teeth to the point that I have completed ground the molars smooth as glass. A splint won't work over dentures so that's out of the question. There are many times during the day that I have to consciously tell myself to stop clenching my jaw. I'll relax it not even realizing how tightly clenched I had it. Within moments I have to relax it again!! Tension, all tension and it has become a bad habit. Hope that you get a splint that helps you to feel better and not ruin your teeth and cause more pain in your jaw. {{{Hugs}}}πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»

I really appreciate the info and well wishes. My PCP told me to take 15
mg of zinc picolinate to reduce anxiety. She did blood work on me and saw I was low in zinc.

Thank you all for sharing. You all help continue to educate me.
I am fortunate that I still have good bone density and that my tmj is still in decent shape.
I was vit D deficient but now getting into a normal range.
I really didn't think about my connection of fibro and tmj problems even though I have both, have had major facial, jaw, neck pain, eye pain+++and vision changes++, pain at hair roots.
