TMJ

Jul 14, 2016 12:10 PM

I can't stop clenching my jaw and it's just making my neck and shoulder pain worse - and that's before even mentioning the headaches. The jaw pain is just horrible and it's getting to where Tylenol and Advil don't help much anymore. The dentist just tells me to wear a night guard. That makes my teeth hurt less, but makes the jaw pain worse.

Doctors say it's a dental problem, dentists say it's a medical problem, and my insurance excludes coverage for TMJ disorder treatment, whether it's deemed dental or medical.

I just want to feel better...

Going to at least call my doctor and see if he can prescribe a muscle relaxer or something.

SoreAndSleepy, I'm sorry to hear this. I have TMJ and TMJD. I've worn a night splint since 1982 because I greetings my teeth n my sleep. But 2 years ago I found out I have osteopenic, which is affecting my bones & joints. Then this year I found out my C2 & C3 & C7 are based. The surgeon told me they are causing the pain in my neck, jaws, & cheeks. I'm having surgery next month on C3. Before the dx the dentist's & previous docs were blaming the opposite causes. This neurosurgeon confirmed my suspicions. Keep pressing forward for answers. Hugs & prayers you'll get help soon! πŸ™‚πŸ’•πŸ™πŸŒΈ

SoreAndSleepy, I am sorry you are having to deal with this. I was diagnosed with TMJ by my ENT after going to him with complaints of hearing loss, jaw pain and migraines. He did numerous tests and he also did X-rays and said my TMJ was degenerative and I should wear a mouth guard. Even with dentures, I still grind my teeth and clench my jaw. I've worn them flat. There's not much you can do but be mindful of your clenching and grinding when you can because it does make your neck and shoulders hurt as well as giving you headaches.
Flappsy, I'm sorry to hear that you have to have surgery next month on C3. Cervical surgery, as you know, is never easy. I've been there as well. I hope and pray that the surgery goes as planned and that you heal quickly and completely achieving less pain in your neck, jaw and cheeks.
Sending y'all lots of love, gentle {{{Hugs}}} and prayers for a better day. πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ»πŸŒ»πŸ˜Š
